During the first caution he suffered a terrible break that would cost him the championship. Rick McCray in the #61 truck drove by Sprague on the track during the caution and accidentally ran into the right side of Sprague's truck. He caught the sheet metal in the right front tire well and pulled it completely out. Sprague had to come in to the pits and they fixed it the best they could but the damage caused the truck to develop a push and it was never the same. They interviewed his crew chief Dennis Connor during the 2nd caution to ask what was wrong with the truck and you could tell he was in disbelief that something like that might cost them the championship. Speaking of the #61 truck. The Steve Coulter truck shut down operations after race 23 at Martinsville. They had already let their driver Tolsma go and weren't going to be running in the Truck Series in 1999 and were starting a team in the Busch Series for 99 instead. Crew Chief for the team, Dave Fuge went with them to get the Busch team ready and serve as crew chief on it, so he wasn't crew chief on the late races in the year for the #61 truck. Some of the lower budget teams used the 61 number in the final 3 races of the year to help ensure they would make the race with a provisional if needed. In Jerry Nadeau's only career start here in the trucks, he just started the race and then turned the truck over to David Starr to finish the race. I assume it was to allow Starr to run the race while still saving his eligibility for Rookie of the Year in 99 because he'd already run the max of 5 races in 98. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
