Ron Fellows led a lot then spun in the chicane in the closing laps, but still finished 3rd. Also, Dane Pitaressi crashed and the front of his truck landed in the tire barrier!(Now tell me, do you see that at Chicagoland or Texas? I thought not.) 2. It had all the makings of a road course battle between the legends of NASCAR road racing, Boris Said and Ron Fellows as both started on the front row. The initial laps proved to be just that, a battle between the 2. But after Pitarresi crashed in the tire barrier, Fellows snuck by Said for the lead and would not really relinquish the strangle hold of the race until the closing laps. Early controversy raged when long time rivals Ron Hornaday and Jack Sprague got together early on in the final turn sending Sprague spinning and causing a mechanical failure. The cameras did not catch it but later in the race Hornaday had a ton of nose damage and initial thought was that Sprague went out on the track and brake checked him. Hornaday in his interview didnt reflect that though. From his interview I was able to gather that there was a caution coming out and the 1 truck of Setzer slowed down and Ron stated he did not know there was a caution causing him to rear end him hard. Never the less, both Hornaday and Sprague ended up several laps down with repairs The race's turning point occurred when Fellows was looking to make a pitstop and had a 25 second lead on the field when the caution flew. This forced him to pit under the caution losing the gigantic lead he had. He was able to reclaim the lead until late which set up a great battle between himself and local favorite Greg Biffle, who was not seen as much of a road racer at the time. Biffle surprisingly kept right on Fellows bumper on the final restart of the day. Fellows was forced to take a defensive line. That was until turn 1 with 8 laps to go. The 2 were side by side leaning on each other when they made contact, nearly having both spin but only Fellows lost it, dropping to 5th. Biffle went on to say someone must have gone off here the prior lap because there was dirt everywhere and both trucks were slipping on the debris. Fellows was able to dispatch of Tolsma and Cook for position but couldnt catch the Roush trucks. And Biffle claimed a wildly popular local win. ESPN kept reporting that if he won he was hosting a victory party at the local pub. Hope it was a good party. Said, who was an early favorite for this race endured battery problems which was why he was not a factor at all, but remarkably still managed to claw into a top 5 spot. 8.
