Longtime underdog driver Jim Sauter comes out of retirement to drive for Richard Childress in a one-race deal, and ends up leading twelve laps. Just imagine what he would have done in Cup if someone gave him the money. 2. A lot of attention was going to teaming up and tandems of trucks to help each other in their drafting at this high speed track. Both Sauters had interesting stories attached to them for this race. Jim Sauter came out of retirement to race but he had still been an active tester for RCR and IROC much like Dave Marcis. This was Jims favorite track so RCR gave him their start and park 8 truck and gave him the go ahead to race. What was really interesting was that they didnt bring him a pit crew. So the first pitstop was really unfortunate for Jim that took him out of the early leaders. He had to wait for Jay to pit and then had to pit the following lap, meaning hed have to start from the back after every pitstop. After Kevin Cywinski's engine failed, despite driving for a Ford team, they said they wanted to help and pitted Jim the rest of the way. Jim was probably on cloud 9 when his son Jay took the lead on lap 42 and you had both father and son 1-2 in the race. Jay's story was also interesting. His truck sustained early damage to his right front, the entire panel had been sheared off, however his truck was still incredibly fast much to the awe of the announcers. But it wasnt surprising, the exact same thing was the case when he had damage in the race at Texas in the same way and he finished 2nd there as well. Randy Renfrow was an early story in the race, replacing Terry Fisher in the 41, he started on the outside pole in an otherwise unheard of team. He would lead a lot of laps early and seemed to be one of the best trucks on track but after spinning, things came apart and the truck failed. Late in the race Stacy Compton had the lead but rubbed against a truck and was reporting a change in the handling. The damage wasnt a concern for crashing but this gave way to Biffle and Sauter to battle it out for the lead. Despite the damage, Sauter appeared to be slightly faster than Biffle but Biffle was able to hold him off at the line and claim his series leading 5th win 7.
