The Texan driver had made 43 starts prior to this race without a single top-10 finish, so his performance in 2001 understandably turned many heads. Fortunately for David, one of those heads belonged to Wayne Spears, who hired him following the season and helped solidify his status as a regular contender for years to come. 5. After rain cancelled qualifying, Riggs, who had an enormous point lead going into the race started from pole. On the warmup laps on cold tires, he ended up spinning out in turn 1 and making slight contact with the inside wall. This was a sign to come for the race he would have. He still was able to start up front despite the spin and amassed a large lead before the Chuck Hossfeld crash. After getting mired back in the field after the caution, Riggs was charging up the slower traffic but got into the loss stuff trying to get around Lance Hooper. He spun out and made contact with Lance Norick, causing him to spin back up into traffic where Rich Woodland would make head on contact with him. They would repair his truck incredibly fast but he still had massive damage and was never a factor as the rest of his race was simply a battle to meet minimum speed. Up front Terry Cook may well have had the truck to beat, he was very fast but he ran out of gas twice in the race totally eliminating him from any chance to win. The later stages of the race would prove to be a fuel milage game, among those fighting up front for the fuel milage would be Cook, Musgrave, Ruttman, Starr, Gaughan, Kvapil and Sprague, but as one by one these competitors needed to pit, it opened the door for Sprague to take his first victory in a year and 5 days. Great result for Brendan Gaughan, Contreras and Haseleu who all got top 10s 8. Rich posted: 09.19.2020 - 5:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dr. Jerry Punch and Phil Parsons were the commentators.
