He then became PE (points exempt) for this race and couldn't score ANY points no matter where he finished. 6. As stated Jack Sprague dominated the event but Kevin Harvick caught him, hungry for his first ever truck win. Sprague came into the race trailing Riggs in the points who crashed earlier in the event, so a great finish would be huge for his points picture. A win would be bigger. Sprague was caught and Harvick even got by him at one point with lapped traffic playing a role. The battling even brought Ted Musgrave into the battle who also briefly took the lead with 3 laps to go. It was glorious battling between the 3 that could have ended up in any and all 3 of the trucks wadded up in the crash. Harvick, in a 1 off, didnt want to race the championship contenders like that and Sprague showed amazing grit to race aggressively enough to keep the lead and not be afraid of the points battle, where Harvick could have easily spun him out at any moment. Musgrave could have taken a big bite of the lead as well if he spun out Sprague. But all 3 raced cleanly and Sprague went on to win and do an incredible burn out. Interestingly enough, Rick Carelli, racing for the Petty's and the defending champ of the race was a factor in the top 10 earlier. But after his engine failed, in an interview he stated that they had plans to run the full season in 2002 for his friend Kevin Harvick, and they were just 1 big sponsor announcement from going to full time. Sadly this never came to be and they only raced once together in 2002 to close out his career. I wonder what that season would have looked like if Carelli had run full time for KHI 13. Hendrick is the listed owner, built the truck, but Bill Elliott Racing was also the listed owner depending on the resource looked at. Even Lionel Racing, when they made the raced-win diecast, listed Bill Elliott Racing and included Bill's logos on the inserts and box. It's similar, but different, to how Chase drove the No. 71 for Contreras, but the truck was definitely built and fielded by Hendrick. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
