Simply incredible. I bet NASCAR has to be thinking "Why in the hell can't we get the Cup series to do this? We even implemented the phony Chase and turned the cars into IROC cars!!" Big time congratulations to Johnny Benson and his crew. Hornaday was murdering them on speed, but two great pit calls for track position and Johnny driving his ASS off got them just enough to finish ahead of Ron. I am happy for Johnny, he is so classy and one hell of a race car driver. He deserves it. Look at how he performed in the #10 car in the Cup series, he did a great job considering that it wasn't a premier ride. He raised that whole team's profile. I would also like to commend Ron for his classiness despite the heartbreaking defeat. Yet another reason why the Truck Series is so much more fun to watch and keep up with than the other series. Better on track racing, better points races (without a phony Chase), better personalities (except for Kyle). It is just better. And this year proved that. 2. The racing is so much better (would you ever see four wide at Homestead during the Cup race on Sunday?) and they go to so many tracks that Cup doesn't. Johnny needs to thank Scott Speed big time, he came up through the gears slowly which slowed Hornaday down, and he raced Horndaday extremely hard. That was the difference there, another lap and Hornaday would have caught him. This proves you don't need a "playoff system" and its bogus points to have a good championship race, its best to let points sort themselves out. In Cup the points would be tigher without the dumb Chase. Congrats to Benson for the championship, to Hornaday for being a good sport and having a good season and to Bodine for coming out of nowhere to win. Probably the first driver to win the first and last race of the year. The big question now is what are Benson's plans for next year? 3. dUDE gUY posted: 11.15.2008 - 12:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Incredible finish to an incredible year. Johnny drove his butt off, and his crew chief made some excellent calls on pit road. They drove hard and they drove smart, and that's what won Benson the championhip. Johnny became the second driver to win both a Nationwide title and a truck series title yesterday. Previously Greg Biffle was the only driver to have won a title both series. And Bodine becomes the first driver to win two truck races at Homestead. Coincidentally, those two wins are his only top 10s in four starts there. 4. I read a rumor that Benson was going to run a second Red Horse racing truck as a team mate to Starr. The rumor goes on to say that most of the crew along with Crew Chief Trip Bruce would follow Benson. 5. petty43 posted: 11.15.2008 - 1:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) congrats to johnny benson and toyota, unfortunately i am a chevy guy, but they can have the truck series if we can still have the cup. It is pretty sad when die hard fans like those who use this site daily are saying that the truck series is better than cup. i remember when it was a short track west coast novelty series 15 years ago. heck i still have the 95 nascar press guide that previews this exciting new series. it is hilarious to look at the old pictures of the trucks and the drivers like hornaday, bliss and rick carelli, and remember the old nfl coach jerry glanville, hes in there too. it is worth finding it on ebay and paying the 5 or 10 bucks it will cost just to flip through it. anyways you guys are right the truck series was BY FAR the best this year and has the funnest races to watch. HEAR ME NOW AND LISTEN TO ME LATER NASCAR. make some damn changes to improve on track compeition or go the way of indy racing it is your choice. the testing ban could be a step in the right direction just keep it up, because i watched less races flag to flag this year than i can ever remember, and i have been a fan as long as i can remember of nascar. 6. Like Sr.fan said, the Truck series is proof why we don't need a "chase" system to decide the championship...the first three years were good, but these last two it's just a game of "how badly can JJ and the #48 team wipe the floor with everyone" and what's the point of having 12 drivers in the chase when only THE TOP TEN get to go to New York....it makes 11th and 12th pretty much worthless. 7. 18fan posted: 11.15.2008 - 10:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Congratulations to Benson and Bodine, whose truck was awful and won the race. Richie Wauters and Rick Ren obviously did not watch that tires did not mean that much. It cost Kyle the race and Hornaday the championship. Racing was great all night 8. The Chase standings compared to the actual points just proves the point that others have been making that the Chase format doesn't belong in the Truck Series. Here's how the final Chase standings would have looked: 1 Todd Bodine 6614 2 Ron Hornaday 6532 3 Johnny Benson 6504 4 Erik Darnell 6401 5 Dennis Setzer 6359 6 Mike Skinner 6337 7 Rick Crawford 6305 8 Matt Crafton 6232 9 Chad McCumbee 6208 10 Jack Sprague 6173 11 Terry Cook 6120 12 David Starr 6042 9. Amazing racing, and what a battle to the last race, last lap. You can't get any better than this. Puts sprint cup to a crying shame. 11. In 2017, he made just 7 starts out of 23 races and would finish 17th in the final standings, if there wasn't any playoffs and if Cup drivers could still score points. It's crazy and sad at the same time as far as the level of competition is concerned... 17th place with just 7 starts and 14th place with 18 starts is a really big difference. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
