The victory came on the 10 anniversary of his memorable but tragic 2001 Daytona 500 win, the race in which Dale Earnhardt was killed. Waltrip becomes the 22nd NASCAR "Triple Threat" driver with this victory, his first in the Truck series. This was his first start in the pickups since 2001. 5. I don't know what Brad Sweet was doing. It looked like he just broke loose all of a sudden and took out about every contender that wasn't in the Travis Kvapil wreck. The first half of this race was so crappy. Some people will probably look at Jame Buescher leading 55 laps and say that he did a great job. All he did was dive in front of Austin Dillon and nobody tried to pass him. It was proven that he truly wasn't that impressive as he never sniffed the lead once he lost it. 11. I was cheering him on once the second big one struck and it pretty much came down to him and Elliott. This was by far the best race out of Speedweeks so far, none of this two car breakaway and swap, this was a real pack race the way it should be. I'll take less lead changes over more drama any time. Its going to take some time to get used to seeing the winner of some races not awarded any points due to selecting a different box at the start of the season. Fifth straight win for a Toyota at Daytona, which breaks their previous tie with Ford at 4 wins each. A cool Speedweeks so far, with Dale Jr starting 3rd in the Nationwide race, and the #3 truck getting the pole in this one and Waltrip winning in the #15. Let all those who think this was fixed begin their rants. Michael and Elliott will be in the Nationwide race tomorrow, and Michael will start the 500 from the 8th spot and looks like a darkhorse contender for that. 13. Props to Rogers, Cobb, Earnhardt, and Chris Fontaine. It won't be long before Fontaine gets some equipment to work with. I never envisioned the top lane working at all. Busch was doing all he could towards the end and for the first time all Speedweeks was able to show the top groove still has some ability. Props to Jennifer Jo for 6th (and boo! hiss! at Kyle for depriving her of a top 5! ;) ), Jeffrey E. for plugging along to get 7th, and my man Ricky Carmichael for starting off in the top 10 (and 4th in points). My girl Johanna Long though "done got run over", it seems Donnie Neuenburger forgot his truck came with a brake pedal as standard equipment. Although, to be fair to Donnie, that sure did look like a brake rotor the #22 hit earlier to cut down its tire - maybe it came off the #07? Goodyear's kudos take a bit of a hit as a few "mystery tire problems" surface, most notably with Travis Kvapil having one go down and taking out half the field with it. "On twitter, Cobb wrote "As 4 Kyle-he blew around me on a caution, swerved real close 2 me and revved his eng. He cut me off n prac the other day & I am just fed up" That sounds like BS to me. I think she's seeing things only the way she wants to see them, because she has a grudge from some petty incident a long time ago. I doubt Kyle Busch could care less about Cobb, seeing as how he doesn't spend much time around her on the track except to lap her truck half a dozen times every race. She's making more of it than there really is. Does anyone else follow her on Twitter? She doesn't exactly come off as the most mature driver in the world herself, and she's almost 40. I've got a lot of points to cover: Point One--The inside lane seems to be two times better than the outer lanes. I thought the race was going to be like this all the way through but the outside lane did get something going about 3/4th's through the race. Point Two--Travis Kvapil was smart enough to wave that he had a tire problem, but he wasn't smart enough to pull off the racetrack to the left? Point Three--Donnie Neuenberger=Human Bulldozer. The first wreck would've only been 8 trucks but Donnie forgot that most vehicles are equipped with a gas and a brake pedal Hmm. Too bad he wasn't driving a Toyota the jokes would be endless. Point Four--Michael Waltrip becomes the first ever driver in NASCAR history to win with half a spoiler. For those that don't know having a low spoiler or in this case a flat spoiler...the truck would become very loose and hard to handle. In addition it would lower the drag and increase the speed. So yes it did contribute to Mikey blowing the field away and looking like a rocket. Also if the truck were to spin out, the truck would be under immense lift and would likely get airbourne. If the spoiler fell off under any lap other than the last he would get black flagged. Fortunately for Mikey it was the last lap so NASCAR really didn't have time to black flag him. 31. I was really pulling for Buescher & Carmichael there, but their trucks got a little beat up in that last big one. After the first big one, Bodine was making a furious charge to the front despite his Tundra being shortened on both ends. His night was finally ended on the 2nd big one. Fortunately for Mikey it was the last lap so NASCAR really didn't have time to black flag him." I was wondering when somebody would mention this. At the end of the race, you have to pass a spoiler test, including a weight test to make sure it won't just fold back providing great straightaway speed. It just happened to come loose on the front straight on the last lap. I'll let you draw your own conclusions on this one. "First off, the race wasn't rigged, Waltrip was just lucky. For all that's made of Cup drivers ruining these lower series, sometimes not enough credit is given to them for the lessons they impart on new drivers just by being in those races. As long as they don't overdo it and run every single race, I think they're an integral part of the identity of the Nationwide and Truck series. (Although if she does try a jump to Cup, maybe people will lay off the Kevin Conway jokes and jibes! :P) I agree with HWGA with regards to Cup guys running the lower series. A few running occasional races in BGN and CTWS helps the kids who are learning tremendously. The new rules (although they make it suck to be Trevor Bayne) do help - only nine "Buschwhackers" in the 300 strikes me as a rathe low number. The real problem, though, I think, is not the drivers running multiple series, taking spots and points, but rather that both the BGN and Truck series schedules have been altered so much, "mirroring" so much of the Cup schedule. If they still raced at places like Hickory, South Boston and Myrtle Beach for the one, and Flemington, Evergreen and Tuscon for the other, it wouldn't have been nearly as much of an issue. 46. It's not that the truck series is in trouble, it's just that you think Elliott Sadler and Waltrip should be running at the back in any race they enter. The truck series is looking better this year than last. "Point Two--Travis Kvapil was smart enough to wave that he had a tire problem, but he wasn't smart enough to pull off the racetrack to the left?" -Cooper If he had pulled left, he would've been going too fast to be able to keep it on the apron in turn 1 even if all four tires are up. He didn't have much of a choice. The tire blew out milliseconds after he put his hand out the window and the truck basically darted right under his own volition. Normally when a driver waves like that, they're telling people they have a problem so that they can stay low and get low as soon as possible. His truck darted right and came around simply because the tire had reached the point of no return. 48. That's GOTTA mean something! No one's saying they're Tony Stewart or Jeff Gordon, but rather that they're not bad race drivers. Saying that they are would be pretty naive. 58. dUDE gUY posted: 02.21.2011 - 11:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree with you Watto. Sadler, Mikey, and others at similar levels or competitiveness didn't just materialize into the Cup series. They raced their asses off in lower series to have a chance to race their ass off in Cup. I like to think of them as the rest of the best - good enough to get into Cup, but not quite good enough to make a lot of noise when there. 59. Miguel Paludo was the highest finishing rookie, finishing a career-best 4th and picking up his 1st top five and 3rd top ten in 5 Truck starts. Rookie Jeffrey Earnhardt gets his 1st career top 10 in 6 Truck starts. Rookie Cole Whitt drove the #93, replacing car owner Shane Sieg after Whitt failed to qualify for the race with the #60 Turn One Racing team he's driving for full time. Whitt finished 14th in just his 2nd career Truck start. Austin Dillon won his 8th career Truck Series pole, tying him with Terry Cook for 11th all time. It's the 2nd time in just 28 Truck starts he's won 3 consecutive poles. 60. Bronco posted: 02.21.2011 - 9:01 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) "It's all relative. I mean, Sadler's won in Cup at Bristol, Texas, and California. He's got a lot of real ability." Tell me about it. It's hilarious how this clown bashes Sadler and Waltrip, guys with seven real Cup wins among them, while at the same time rooting on Brad K, a guy who got a lucky Talladega win two years ago, after after which he hasn't done shit in the Cup series. Sadler's strong performances in Truck and Nationwide last year pretty much told me what I already knew - that he's a talented driver being held back by what was a very mediocre Cup team. The fact that it took 10 years for another driver to win in the #21 Ford also supports that. As for Waltrip, all his RP wins weren't just all about DEI, because then the #1 team should also have won at Daytona/Talladega. 61. 00andJoe posted: 02.23.2011 - 5:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And the #15 gets socked for that spoiler. 25 owner points, and $25,000+year-end probation for the crew chief. 62. I know I have talked bad a whole lot about Mikey, so my opinion on him doesn't hold much merit to some people, but what are the chances? It happens to fall off right as he pulls out to make the pass, when he needs to make the most straight line speed. "while at the same time rooting on Brad K" Here is the difference: I don't try to make him out to be anything other than what he is. I just like the guy. I'm not saying he is a great. He is what he is. A really good NWide driver with a LOT to prove on the Cup side. I disagree about his one Cup win, it was impressive in my opinion. It wasn't rain shortened or a fuel mileage battle, he had to race 3 really good drivers at the end. But it was just one win. I'm not comparing him to anyone that has had a lot of success on the Cup level. I think he's going to do great in the future, but until he proves it, he is what he is. 65. I'm sure the #15 truck's crew chief applied his NAPA know how skillz to create a spoiler drop mechanism that Waltrip could activate when he needed to pass Sadler. Someone get that guy to replace Chad Knaus. "I know I have talked bad a whole lot about Mikey, so my opinion on him doesn't hold much merit to some people," Ha, finally you're right about something. You're damn right that your opinion on anything Waltrip related holds no merit around here. "It happens to fall off right as he pulls out to make the pass, when he needs to make the most straight line speed." Like I said earlier, either the crew chief was a mechanical genius that installed a modification to the spoiler that Waltrip could change from inside the truck, or he had it set up to drop on the final lap (factoring the GWC which he couldn't have known about). Or, maybe, just maybe it's pure circumstance that the spoiler dropped when it did, and that there's nothing more to it than that? I'll let you figure it all out. 66. NASCAR had to penalize em on the basis that the truck didn't pass inspection because half the spoiler was gone, and they penalized them about what you'd expect. What has to be remembered is that as that truck goes through tech after the race and such, any given crew chief can walk up to that truck and take a good look at why the spoiler was sitting the way it was. Maybe I'm naive, but I have to think that it would be known if it was blatant cheating and not a part failure. I saw in a number of places that it was definitely part failure. 68.
