Sauter's block turned out to the rain winning move as the skies opened up right afterward complete with a funny "IT'S RAINING!" line from Sauter over his radio. The weather ended up ending the race and actually it's easy to see why, just in the time it took Speed to show some replays of the Hamlin's attempted pass the whole track ended up soaked, complete with some rooster tails coming off the trucks under caution as they headed for pit road. Sauter was very excited about winning the race afterward, completely ignoring that he didn't win the title. He came close though, Austin Dillon had trouble late and almost slipped far enough back to lose it while Sauter made all the right moves. Like Sauter James Buscher had a chance on paper to win the title and started the night well by winning the pole then leading early. Things almost turned to disaster though when he and Kevin Harvick got into it on a restart, almost running each other off the track, which led Buscher to get Harvick seriously sideways when the Cup driver tried to overtake him as both headed for pit road. Neither truck was damaged and both kept racing, Harvick went on to finish 3rd but easily could have had second if the caution for rain came 10 seconds later. The pace vehicle for this race was oddly a new Ford Police Interceptor Utility, a police-spec version of the Ford Explorer. It appeared to have no modifications for its pace car duties, it was just a police SUV leading the field around under caution (hey it already had the flashing lights). 7. I can cut him some slack for the first incident with Harvick, as that was caused by their mutual unwillingness to give and take. But the second one was totally uncalled for. Yeah, I get that he doesn't want to be viewed as a guy who can be pushed around, but trying to spin someone out on pit road while running fourth with a truck still capable of winning, is not the way to go about things. Please don't do it again, James. I've been cheering for you for the last three years, and you just made that significantly harder for me. Another incident like that, and you may lose yourself a fan. On a happier note, congrats to Austin Dillon on winning the championship, and major congrats to Johnny Sauter on the win! Since I don't feel like looking it up, Cooper, when was the last time a NASCAR season finale was shortened for any reason? The last one I can think of offhand was North Wilkesboro in 1954, which was called off after Lou Figaro's fatal accident. 8. potatosalad48 posted: 11.18.2011 - 11:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Johnny Sauter did all he could to pull the upset, but Dillon eeks out the title by 6 points. Mike Garvey 'qualified' the #38, while Brent Raymer was the scheduled starter in the #93. Setzer and Chastain replaced them after the rain kept their rides from making the show. Career Truck Series start #300 for both Ron Hornaday Jr. and Dennis Setzer. 13. 00andJoe posted: 11.19.2011 - 12:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #21 sponsor: Charter Communications #15 sponsor: Red Top Auto Oction/OnLine Ring Man 14. 00andJoe posted: 11.19.2011 - 12:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Er...that's Red Top Auto Auction, of course. Bronco posted: 11.19.2011 - 12:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) NASCAR basically handed the championship to Dillon by not rightfully penalizing him for going under the yellow line on the last lap at Talladega. They rightfully penalized Sauter for changing lanes before the start finish line at Texas, which cost him the win and a ton of points. On the flip side, going back to 2011 Daytona Speedweeks, Denny Hamlin was penalized for his move in the Bud Shootout, while Kahne was not penalized for moving down in front of JPM in the Duel race. Either way I feel like Sauter got screwed out a championship, and combine that with NASCAR not penalizing Vickers at all for his move at Phoenix, it proves that NASCAR officiating has a very long way to go. Todd Bodine records his worst season in the Trucks in every category a year after scoring a dominant championship. His #30 team shut down due to a lack of sponsorship forcing him to move to the #5. Ted Musgrave, Johnny Benson and now Todd Bodine are the only ones to go winless in the season after they won the championship. With Musgrave and Benson, their teams shut down after Homestead. Hornaday and Setzer make their 300th starts. 16. Anonymous posted: 11.19.2011 - 1:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Nelson Piquet Jr. will be a factor next year. 17. Yes, Kevin has pulled more than his share of dumb moves in the past, and hell, he's even blatantly spun others out ON PURPOSE. But I don't care who you are, trying to wreck another driver like that is very hazardous, and I think James needs to definitely spend a couple more years in this Series before moving up. I congratulate him on a good season, but he isn't quite a champion-caliber driver yet. RCR and the #3 truck win their second Truck Series championship (their first coming in '95 with Mike Skinner). RCR also won a ROTY trophy from the performance of Joey Coulter in the #22. 18. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 11.19.2011 - 2:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually JS screwed himself when he changed lanes at Texas when he shouldn't have. If he doesn't do that (finishing 22nd, Austin finished 26th). Johnny wins and if hind set is really 20-20, then Johnny Sauter is your champion. So NASCAR "Gifted" nothing to Austin, JS "gifted" it to him back at Texas with his "david ragen" like move. 19. Yes, it is Childress's old number, but holding the number hostage for 10 years in all three series for your grandkids who are almost on the same tier of human beings as Harvick and Busch and saying you are keeping it for old time's sake is sick and a perversion of justice. Dale Jr., if I were you, I would quit in protest. Not that you couldn't have the 3 (you said yourselve it had to wait until you a Cup title), but that the 3 is being blemished and adulterated by these little cockroaches. Is this NASCAR's future? A future corrupted by the Dillons? 21. 00andJoe posted: 11.19.2011 - 6:52 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) NRF, your unlikable side is showing again. 22. 00andJoe posted: 11.19.2011 - 6:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Anyone have any idea why the #10 was showing on the ticker as a Dodge? 23. But what nobody remember to mention is that not long after that, Sauter broke an axle leaving the pits on his final pit stop at Kentucky while on his way to no worse than a second place finish, if not a win. And by the way, I'm glad that NASCAR didn't penalize Dillon and whoever it was behind him one lap each for passing below the broken yellow line at Talladega, which is not totally straight, as it angles toward the pit entrance. And by the way, why doesn't NASCAR just say they're going to automatically penalize you one lap for violations like that, instead of the baloney they give after the fact. They can do that by simply nit scoring you for that lap, like they do if your car is disabled and gets outside help on the final lap, such as was the case with Richard Petty and Neil Bonnett at the '76 and '80 Daytona 500s, respectively. By the way, the end of this race, with the torrential downpour was shades of Indy in 1975, just without the spin outs and outright havoc that the rain at Indy that day caused. [By the way, the torrential downpour at the 1975 Indianapolis 500 occurred the very same day that Dale Earnhardt, Sr. made his Cup debut.] 25. 18fan posted: 11.19.2011 - 10:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) If I remember correctly Dillon also made a pass below the yellow line on the backstretch at Talladega. 26. I really liked how Buescher what not going to pull over and let a cup driver go. That is what they should do and stop letting the trucks series turn into a second cup series. The nascar world would be much easier if cup driver were banned from nationwide and trucks like Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, and Brad Keselowski Also Congrats to Austin Dillon on his 1st Truck Series Championship and Johnny Sauter on his 2nd truck win of the season Hopefully Dillon can pull of the nationwide championship next season 28. The DNQ at Phoenix probably cost Buescher the championship. Looks like he would have only needed a 14th or better in that race and the title would have been his. 29. Championship gets decided on in-race penalties (Dillon not getting penalized at Talladega, Sauter getting penalized at Texas; both situations should have been penalized). Well done NASCAR. You let a championship come down to your terrible officiating skills. 31. Mike did run the fulltime Busch schedule in 2001. 32. irony posted: 11.20.2011 - 10:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Mike Dillon won a track championship at my home track (Tri-County Motor Speedway) but was rather bad in the Busch Series. 33. Talon64 posted: 11.21.2011 - 7:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) As DSFF would say, this was a season where it seemed like nobody wanted to win the championship. At least during the middle of the year when Dillon and Sauter were losing points due to both bad luck and mistakes. But Dillon was the one who turned it on the most during the last 3rd of the season (aside from Ron Hornaday), 5 top 3 finishes and 7 top 10's in the last 8 races to take and then hold on to the point lead and win the title. Austin Dillon becomes the youngest Truck Series champ in history at age 21, beating Travis Kvapil's record of 27 when he won the 2003 championship. Dillon and Kvapil are the only 2 drivers under the age of 30 to win a Truck Series championship. For the 1st time in his career, Johnny Sauter wins multiple national touring series races in a season as he picked up his 2nd Truck win of 2011. He finishes a career-high 2nd in the standings in just his 3rd full season in Trucks, although his average finish (9.4) was worse than when he was 3rd in 2010 (8.1). Nelson Piquet Jr. was the highest finishing rookie in the race with his rookie-leading 6th top 5 of 2011. But it wasn't enough to overcome 5th place finish Joey Coulter for ROTY, who became the 2nd straight RCR driver to take home the award (Austin Dillon in 2010). Coulter led all rookies in top 10's (13), average finish (12.4) and in the standings with a 7th place finish. ARCA champ Ty Dillon picked up his 2nd top 10 in his first 3 Truck starts (9.0 avg fin). 34.
