On a restart, Piquet got loose under Kurt and spun, but that put him in position to be able to win the race on fuel mileage as the race went green to the end. Kurt Busch dominated the race in his first race in the series since 2001. 4. 1995z71 posted: 08.18.2012 - 6:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) First career truck win for Nelson Piquet, Jr. Third career NASCAR win each coming in a different division & each in 2012. Parker Kligerman debuts for Red Horse Racing finishing 4th. First career Top 5 for Dakoda Armstrong. John Wes Townley returns to his wrecking ways. First career truck start for Stephen Leicht. 5. His Sprint Cup debut basically lasted one lap... of practice. His truck result at Pocono must have been some strange statistical anomaly. I didn't see the race, but there's no way he earned that by being a top 10 driver. Anyway, I'm glad Piquet won. He could actually be what NASCAR needs now, if he makes it to Sprint Cup it will attract a lot of Brazilian interest in the sport that could also lead to a brazillion of sponsorship dollars coming in. 6. ch posted: 08.18.2012 - 7:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor change on one truck: 6 - Eddie Sharp Racing (No logos on the hood or quarter panels) 7. 10andJoe posted: 08.18.2012 - 7:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The #6 did carry Lofton Cattle logos - on the tonneau cover. Jordan - Clearly you haven't watched JWT much this year. His withdrawing /himself/ from the Sprint Cup car at Pocono (which really should be applauded as it takes guts to say "no, I'm not ready") aside, this was pretty much his first "unforced error" this year - and, oh by the way, by the same reasoning Tim George, Jr is a dunce...and /so is Piquet/ because they both had the /exact same thing happen/. Really, the Townley hate on here has gone way past "cutely annoying". 8. 10andJoe posted: 08.18.2012 - 7:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #7, #17 sponsor: Toyota (no RHR logos) #9 sponsor: AM FM Energy #74 sponsor: Koma Unwind Relaxation Drink Also note that while the #5 ran using Wauters' number and owner points, the truck was one of RSS Racing's. 9. Nelson a few truck races this year that he had a top 2 truck, but couldn't seal the deal before today. I wouldn't be shocked if this wouldn't be his own truck series win this year. I think Nelson has the potential to be the best open wheel driver in NASCAR since Tony Stewart. While Montoya has 2 cup wins, Montoya has not reach the exceptions people expected out of him. Montoya did have some oval races that he almost such as 2 Brickyard 400 races, but he didn't win. I think Nelson is ready or very close to be ready for being a full time Nationwide driver. 10. cjs3872 posted: 08.18.2012 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And of course, Nelson Piquet, Jr. has a chance to continue his family's legacy in racing. Granted, it's not in F1, where his father became one of the most forgotten about great champions in history (seriously, 3 World Championships in the same era as Mansell, Prost, and Senna, and he's not even mentioned among the all-time greats?), but also carve his own place in the sport. For better or worse, he could be to NASCAR what Emerson Fittiapldi was to IndyCar racing when he came to IndyCar back in 1984. And people forget that Fittipaldi had a mentor when he first came to IndyCar racing named Gary Bettenhausen. and isn't ironic that both Fittipaldi and the younger Piquet both get their first oval win in a major series at the same track, the Michigan International Speedway. Of course, Piquet won today at Michigan and Fittipaldi got his first oval win at the same track, at the 1985 Michigan 500. But the best thing Nelson Piquet, Jr. can do, especially for newer fans to auto racing, is to have a successful NASCAR career, if for no other reason than to remind the yojnger fans just how great a champion his father was. Of course, there might be mixed emotions for him the first time he races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which was the only track where his father ever got injured (practicing for pole day qualifications for the 1992 Indianapolis 500). 11. I'm kinda pulling for Parker Kligerman to pull this championship off. How odd would that be? But I still like Peters too. 12. He stayed out on old tires for that restart but before the caution he was on the fringe of the Top 10. He's been running better lately, there's no denying that. Believe it or not Kurt Busch's 9th place finish is a lower finishing position than each of Jason Leffler's last 5 starts in the #18 truck. 13. He is a great talent and will win races for many years to come. 15. Remember that when Nelson, Sr. was racking up his wins and championships, team orders didn't even exist, or if it did, it was hardly ever heard of, meaning that it was every man for himself. The ironic thing about that whole incident is that Nelson, Jr. may forever be known for a crash, somethng his father almost never did in his F1 career. A couple of months ago, I checked the elder Piquet's F1 stats, and found out that he had spun or crashed out of just 27 races in his entire F1 career, almost as many as he won. And again, I know for many of his father's fans, even though they may not follow NASCAR, they of of the Piquet name, and that Nelson, Jr. is returning it to prominence in the racing world is making many fans that followed his father proud. And it's also why I say that the most important thing Nelson, Jr. ever does, especially for the younger fans that don't know about his father's career, is to remind those fans that don't know just what a great champion Nelson, Sr. was. as I said, the elder Piquet won three F1 championships in an era that also saw legends like Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna at their best, and Piquet won three F1 titles against those drivers, and yet when the list of F1 greats comes up, Nelson's name is hardly ever mentioned, while Prost, Senna, and Mansell are almost constantly mentioned, yet Piquet, Sr. more than held his own against these other legends. 18. RaceFanX posted: 08.19.2012 - 1:45 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Piquet isn't ban from F1 but because he actually came out and admitted what Renault made him do behind closed doors he is more or less unofficially blacklisted. Despite some good runs it's highly unlikely he'll ever race in F1 again...BUT I love that he's finding a home and a good number of fans in NASCAR. Nelson Piquet Sr. turned 60 the day before this race and took a weekend vacation in Las Vegas to celebrate it. Piquet Jr. saluted his father with Sr's old fake name he started his career under 'Piket' above the door and a special thank you design on the tonneau cover. Jr also joked to his dad to 'bet on 30 black' in reference to his Truck before delivering this win. 19. 10andJoe posted: 08.19.2012 - 3:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) -Best career finish for Bryan Silas. 20. 10andJoe posted: 08.19.2012 - 3:22 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) -Jennifer Jo Cobb's 50th Truck Series start. 21. It made for a fun race to watch. 23. Jordan posted: 08.19.2012 - 12:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Nelsoninho just got stuck on a poor F1 team, in a situation no one could have dealt with. He sure didn't perform very well, but anyone who thinks Renault wasn't pouring 100% of their resources behind Alonso doesn't understand F1. Nelson was ordered by his team to crash to help Alonso, and it's a situation where you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. He either got fired or was the subject of a major controversy, you can't fault a young racer with making either decision in this case. There's a major difference between Piquet Jr. and Townley, and that is that ultimately, Nelson's talent has taken him to where he is, even though he has a famous name. Townley would have never made it past Pro Cup if his dad didn't own Zaxby's. Comparing these two is like comparing Dale Earnhardt Jr. to Paul Menard. Dale Jr. is not his dad, but ultimately he did show talent in the Busch Series and has been able to back up at least some of that in Sprint Cup. Menard sucked for years before he began to improve, yet never was even threatened with the loss of a ride because his daddy was footing the bills. 24. Piquet Jr. becomes the 2nd full time Turner Motorsports Truck driver this season to get their first career Nationwide Series win in the #30 Turner Nationwide car before getting their first Truck win. He has 4 DNF's in 2012, all due to crashes. But he has top 9 finishes in all 8 races he's finished (4.9 average finish). After failing to win a race in their first two full seasons in Trucks, Turner Motorsports now leads the series with 5 wins in the 12 races (Buescher 3, Kahne 1, Piquet Jr. 1). Jason White finishes a career-best 2nd, just his 2nd top 3 and 9th top 5 in 141 career Truck starts. However, his 2 top 5's and 5 top 10's this year matches his total from all of 2011. Dakoda Armstrong's the highest finishing rookie in the race, getting both his first top 10 of 2012 and first career top 5. Armstrong's best finish prior to Michigan was the last race at Pocono where he finished 12th. In his first race with Red Horse Racing, Parker Kligerman gets just his 3rd top 5 of the season but his 2nd in the last 3 races. It's also his 4th consecutive top 10 finish (previous best was 2 in a row) and his 8th top 10 of the year ties his total from all of his 2011 rookie season. James Buescher ties Timothy Peters for the series lead in top 5's with his 7th of 2012. It's the 2nd time this year he's had 3 straight top 5's (career-high for consecutive top 5's is 4). It's also his 40th career top 10 in 84 series starts. Ty Dillon picks up his series-leading 11th top 10 of the season (no one else has more than 9) and leads the series in average finish at 7.1; despite just 2 top 5's, he's now tied with Timothy Peters for the point lead. Joey Coulter backed up his 1st career Truck Series win with his 1st career Truck Series pole. But Coulter failed to lead a lap and settled for 7th, his 5th top 10 in the last 6 races and 10th consecutive top 15 finish. Brad Keselowski only manages 8th in his first start in the #29 BKR truck, his 4th top 10 in 5 starts this season and 8th in 53 career starts. Kurt Busch made his first Truck Series start since 2001, picking up his 18th top 10 in 26 series starts. He also led the most laps (57), meaning he's now led 11.7% of the laps he's completed in the series (515 of 4383). Miguel Paludo ties his best finish of 2012 in 10th, just his 2nd top 10 of the season but his 9th finish of 15th or better. Johnny Sauter finishes in the top 20 for just the 5th time in 12 races this season. Bryan Silas gets his best career finish in 14th, his first top 15 in 31 career Truck Series starts. Tim George Jr. now has just an 18.0 average finish in 6 starts in the #2 RCR Truck this season with a best finish of 15th twice (1 pole). Kevin Harvick and Brendan Gaughan have combined for 4 top 5's and a 7.0 average finish in the #2's other 6 races. 29.
