Lots of beatin' 'n' bangin', drivers were mad after the race, championship contenders had up-and-down days. This may have been the best Truck race of the year. Parker Kligerman and James Buescher were a lap down at one point (Kligerman must have spent half the race a lap down) and both come out of it with top 10 finishes. Ty Dillon the points leader was quietly running in 6th when his right front blew entering the corner, making slight contact with the wall, and lost six laps as a result. This gives Buescher a 21-point lead with three races to go. Next week is Texas, a race he's sure to dominate as all 4 of his wins have come on the 1.5-mile tracks this season. Nelson Piquet, Jr. got very aggressive in the closing laps, making an unsuccessful divebomb on Brian Scott late in the race, rubbed fenders with Kevin Harvick that might have caused Harvick's tire to go down, and had a great side-by-side battle with Joey Coulter for 2nd place. After the race Piquet said that one thing he has lacked in his Truck Series career is aggression, and it's good to see him make some moves to gain four positions late in the race. Speaking of Brian Scott, he wasn't too happy with Piquet after the race as he turned him on pit road, then proceeded to bump him a couple times after Piquet got straightened out. Coulter on the other hand was pretty cheerful as he and Piquet shook hands and basically laughed it off after a good hard battle for 2nd. This sport needs more drivers like that; young up-and-coming drivers who can race each other hard and still have respect for each other afterwards. Matt Crafton was none-too-pleased after the race as he ran into Denny after the race, then came up to his window while Denny was in victory lane and had to be forcibly removed by one of Denny's crew members. I understand Crafton's frustration as he looked to be in position for his 1st win of the season and lost it after getting the "bump 'n' run" from a Cup driver, but that's just good hard short track racing. Denny simply had the faster truck and did a good job of moving other trucks out of the way as a last resort. With Joey Coulter right behind him, Denny had to pass Crafton quickly and had to move him out of the way. Love the emotion Crafton had after losing once again from a late race pass. And finally, my hat's off to Scott Riggs. What an amazing job from a driver who hadn't been able to run the full race since the Nationwide race at Texas last fall. That #92 truck's previous best finish this year was 18th. Riggs proved today that he still can get the job done behind the wheel of a NASCAR vehicle, whether it be a car or a truck. Hopefully this isn't just a one-time deal and somebody takes notice and offers him a full race ride in the near future. 10. The damage didn't look bad, but it did enough to put him six laps down and cause him to lose his points lead to Buescher. And Crafton was mad at Denny because Denny gave him the "bump 'n' run" late in the race and caused Crafton to lose three positions. Crafton was also going for his 1st win of the year and once again lost it in the closing stages of the race as he also was passed late at Las Vegas when he seemingly had the win in his sights. 13. Just look at what Brian Scott tried to do to Piquet on pit lane after the race, and what Matt Crafton was doing in victory lane with Denny Hamlin. I always thought victory lane was a sacred place where confrontations like that were out of bounds. If I remember right, didn't Carl Edwards get into trouble by accosting Dale, Jr. in a similar way in victory lane after a Nationwide race at Michigan several years ago as a result of an altercation? I always thought that victory lane was a sacred place where stuff like that wasn't supposed to happen. Crafton did on the cool-down lap was something I don't have a problem with, but when you go to victory lane to confront another driver, you clearly cross the line. And of course, then there's Scott, who seemingly hits everything but the pace car each time out. What he did after the race is an example of why Joe Gibbs is releasing him at season's end. Also, now that he's been given a 21-point lead due to the misfortunes of Ty Dillon (and Timothy Peters' inability to take full advantage), I wonder how James Buescher is going to play it at Texas. With more than a half race lead over second place, Buescher and his team could go for the jugular and try to win, or just keep Dillon, Timothy Peters, and Parker Kligerman within his sight in the last three races, knowing that if he can keep them in sight, he'll have the championship locked up. But he's had some unusual problems this years, including a race where his crew had to change carburetors in one of his wins, and he did exactly what Ty Dillon did today while he was dominating at Iowa, blow a right front tire and crash. but if Buescher finishes where he did today in the last three races, it will be almost impossible for him to lose the championship. But if he wins at Texas, he could be looking at an early clinching at Phoenix, as all he'll need is a 41-point lead to guarantee a championship by simply starting the finale at Homestead. 16. 10andJoe posted: 10.27.2012 - 8:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #27 sponsor: Hillman Racing 17. 10andJoe posted: 10.27.2012 - 8:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) >I always thought victory lane was a sacred place where confrontations like that were out of bounds. A.J. Foyt, who owned the car of Billy Boat, protested, claiming that laps his car ran were not scored, which was indeed the case. But apparently, instead of going to where protests were lodged, he went to victory lane, where the fracas ensued, but in the end, justice was done, as the right car was later declared the winner, but it was Luyendyk in victory lane first that night, because he was flagged the winner. Of course, Foyt had to be fined for the incident in victory lane, and was, if I remember right. That fiasco, plus another one indirectly involving Luyendyk the following year, the turning on of the green light on the final lap of the 1997 Indianapolis 500, were the last straws when it came to USAC handling the IRL's officiating, and IRL's own officiating crew began officiating the races in that series, including the timing and scoring. 25. FHgrad99 posted: 10.28.2012 - 12:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I saw about the second half of the race. Scott Riggs was running just outside of the top 10 and he really came on strong after the last pit stops with about 40 laps to go. He barely had to lay a bumper to anybody to pass them. The reason why Ty Dillon lost 6 laps because of a flat tire was when his tire went down the front sway bar ground on the track and the end of the sway bar broke where it attaches to another part of the suspension and the crew had to replace the sway bar. 28. Yes that's right. I forgot about that part. I knew it damaged the suspension for him to lose six laps since he barely made contact with the wall, but I forgot about that reasoning. Good ears, FHgrad99. "He barely had to lay a bumper to anybody to pass them." I think Scott Riggs' stock rose significantly following this race, not just because he finished 5th in a Ricky Benton truck that hadn't finished better than 18th this season, but because he did it so cleanly and methodically. It just shows you that with age comes great wisdom. When Scott first came into this sport, he was a hard-nosed short track racer from North Carolina who was very impatient and tried to pass as many cars/trucks as he could right off the bat, something that Darrell Waltrip mentioned during the '02 Talladega Busch race. Fast forward to 2012, and in his first full distance race in a year, with a team that has never posted a top 10 on a non-restrictor plate track, after qualifying back in 23rd, he methodically worked his way through the field and his crew kept making his truck better, and he's rewarded for his efforts with a 5th place finish. I hope Scott gets more opportunities like this to run the full race, because his performance today shows that he's still got it. 29. cjs3872 posted: 10.28.2012 - 1:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) DSFF, what happened in victory lane after the fact in 1997 IRL race at Texas (I was mistaken about the year in question) is indisputeable. But you got the facts mixed up as to who was there first and why he was there first, as well as the scoring mix-up that set all that off. And Dave #38 Fan, I would rather see a guy like Denny Hamlin run a second truck for Kyle Busch Motorsports that to have that spot taken by someone who's just going to run a few laps and park it. Besides, Hamlin's not one of those Cup drivers that would run a lot of races in the truck series, so I don't have a problem with him being in the race. In fact, during the middle stages of the race, Nelson Piquet, Jr. had a truck equal to, if not better than that of Hamlin at times, but instead of trying to pass him, he followed him in an attempt to learn how to drive the track in racing conditions. Considering he finished second to Hamlin, I'd say the results of what Piquet was trying to do was obvious. Also, the drivers in the lower divisions hoping to move up admit they learn so much more by having the Cup drivers in the race, knowing that if they beat the Cup drivers that they would have really accomplished something. I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's the Cup TEAMS, not the drivers that I have a problem with running the lower series, because of the money difference, which is why if James Buescher wins the title for Steve Turner against Richard Childress this year, it will be a feather in the cap of Turner and Buescher. Sure Turner has some backing from Hendrick Motorsports, but it's not a true Cup team. It may have such aspirations in the future, but it's only run one Cup race, this year's Firecracker 400 at Daytona with a surprisingly competitive Bill Elliott. 30. It's the first win for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the Truck Series this season and their first win that wasn't with the #18. But it's already their 17th win in 3 seasons in the Trucks. Nelson Piquet Jr. picks up his first runner-up finish of 2012 and 2nd of his career. It's his 2nd top 2 finish in the last 3 races, and 4th top 3 finish of the year (2 in his first 30 starts). It's also his first top 5 in 10 career short track starts (6 top 10's, 11.4 avg fin). Joey Coulter has 6 career top 4 finishes (4 top 3's) in 44 Truck starts, but they've all come this season. It's his 3rd top 5 in the last 4 races, but his first top 5 in 9 races when he's qualified outside of the top 10. Matt Crafton's 13th top 10 of the season equals his total from all of 2012 (25 races), with 12 of them coming in the last 14 races (7.2 avg fin), and his 33 laps led are his most in the last 16 races (40 laps led at Rockingham). But Crafton still sits on 2 career wins in 291 starts, a 0.68% win % that ranks 2nd-last among winning drivers with 100 or more starts (29th out of 30). Scott Riggs picks up his 16th career top 5 in 49 Truck Series starts, but his first since he raced full-time in the series back in 2001 (14 top 5's in 24 races). In fact it's his first top 5 in NASCAR, period, since a 4th place in Cup at Bristol back on August 26th, 2006. It's Ricky Benton's 2nd top 5 in 30 career Truck races as an owner. James Buescher finishes in the top 6 for a 4th consecutive race, during which he's made up 32 points on Ty Dillon in the standings (22 of them here at Martinsville). It's his 10th top 10 in 20 career short track starts (12.6 avg fin). Timothy Peters earned his 6th career Truck Series pole and 2nd of 2012. Of his 981 career laps led in Trucks, 327 have come from his 6 poles (1 win, 3 top 5's, 5 top 10's, 9.3 avg fin). His 13 top 10's this season are his most since a career-high 16 in 2010. Ryan Blaney picks up his 4th top 10 in 6 career Truck Series starts, and 9th in 17 starts between NNS and Trucks (12.2 avg fin). Parker Kligerman picks up his 6th top 10 in 8 races in the #7 RHR Truck (8.0 avg fin, versus 9.4 in the first 11 races of 2012 with BKR). Brian Scott picks up his 2nd top 10 in 4 Truck Series starts this season (11.2 avg fin). Max Gresham gets his best career Truck Series finish in 11th, his first top 15 and just his 3rd top 20 finish in 14 career starts (23.4 avg fin). Kevin Harvick finishes outside of the top 10 for the first time in his last 13 Truck Series starts, dating back to 2011. 32.
