Just to illustrate the importance of tires, Nelson Piquet, Jr. drove from 12th to 4th in the last 2 laps with fresh tires, so they definitely had an impact. None of the championship contenders were very impressive until Dillon made his late move. I expected much more out of Buescher, but he did what he had to do and won the title, so big congratulations to him. Kyle mentioned in his interview that KBM is losing Dollar General next year, so it will be interesting what happens with that team because he said he wants to run 3 trucks next year, depending on sponsorship. Hopefully both he and Kurt cut back on their Nationwide races and maybe give Coulter a shot in some races. 7. It looks like the 2 truck of Tim George Jr. No one, including the SPEED commentators, mentioned it (understandable, since there was so much else going on). If you watch the replay of the finish, look back at turn four, and there is a truck spinning to the inside of the track. 9. (Talladega) Luckily for him, Ty Dillon's struggles at Martinsville & Phoenix gave Buescher just enough cushion to back into the championship. Someone made a great point on the Cup page that compared Kyle's reaction after this race with Kurt's reaction after the 2003 Darlington race. In the same exact situation (getting beat by an underdog in a beating and banging side-by-side finish), Kurt was ecstatic to be a part of something like that, while Kyle got pissy. Now, I don't like Kurt really at all, but I give him huge props for realizing that that's racing. You win some, you lose some, you get roughed up, you rough other people up. I understand that Kyle has been having bad luck when it comes to winning races this year (especially in the last month or so), but I still don't see any reason to say "it doesn't matter" in your interview. Obviously it does matter, because if it didn't, then he wouldn't be out there. Put yourself in Kyle's shoes. You're looking for a sponsor for your team next year in Trucks. Why not get excited about being involved in a badass finish like that and go and congratulate the kid that just beat you? I'm sure sponsors would much rather want to sponsor a guy like that than a guy with a piss poor attitude who thinks "it doesn't matter". So, overall, here's my opinion: He should've just brushed it off like Kurt did, and went and congratulated Cale Gale, because Cale deserved it. Cale beat him fair and square (yeah, they made contact, but again, that's what racing for the win is all about). It would have been better for his own sake as a driver and an owner if he had done that. Anyway, point systems are more or less subjective. More if some drivers have no points for some tail finishes. Less if all drivers have points for all finishes. We all know some objective systems, such as: Average Finish, Most distance, Most distance led, Quality Passes, and of cause No of Wins, or Top 5s, or Top 10s. Wins is the easiest method - and the most subjective of Obj. Average Finish is very objective - but for one Subj race rack. And we know the "eureka" - Drivers Distance /divide/ Average Finish Example: Alfa Bobby won (1st) 300-mile race and he has 300/1 = 300 pts. + 300k$ in 1st race. Beta Bobby, 2nd and he has 300/2 = 150 pts. +150k$ in 1st race. Gamma Bobby, 3rd and he has 300/3 = 100 pts. +100k$ in 1st race. Delta Bobby, 4th and he has 300/4 = 75 pts. +75k$ in 1st race. Vega Bobby, 5th and he has 300/5 = 60 pts. +60k$ in 1st race. Ricky Bobby, 6th and he has 300/6 = 50 pts. +50k$ in 1st race. Tricky games will be in 2nd, 3rd, etc races. Money$ are given after each race. But points are calculated each time with new basis of whole distance & Aver.Fin. If next is 600-mile race (2nd) and finish is like: 1st Ricky-B, 2nd Vega-B, 3rd Delta-B, 4th Gamma-B, 5th Beta-B, 6th Alfa-B... Standings after 2 races (300+600) 900-miles combined. Any Driver: Distance / Finishes combined * Races made Ricky 900/7*2 = 257 pts Alfa 900/7*2 = 257 pts Vega 900/7*2 = 257 pts Beta 900/7*2 = 257 pts Delta 900/7*2 = 257 pts Gamma 900/7*2 = 257 pts All drivers have same equal distance (900) and all have same Aver.Fin. (3,5). The battle is very tight and two winners have only 1 Top 5 each. If any driver has +1 mile he is a bit 1st. If -1 mile - a bit last 6th. Fun with AF - if a driver has just a bit* better AF - he has much* more points. What I took from that comment is that Kyle doesn't even care how he's losing these races anymore. Him, and his teams, have found just about every possible way to come up short when victory (and a Chase berth) were within reach. Cale Gale's move reminded me more of Donny Lia. A rookie driver who had a shot at the win, figuring that these opportunities won't happen all the time for them, saying "screw it!" and doing what he had to do to get the win. Now Donny Lia's back driving Modifieds (but doing a great job down there), no more Trucks but he's got that win under his belt. The Trucks might be a little more... um, fun next season since NASCAR's lowering the age limit in the series to 16. Although it means you might see Chase Elliott running some races next year and getting a head start on moving up the ladder. 42. His previous best Truck finish was 5th twice (Dover, Iowa), and best NASCAR finish was 4th in Nationwide at Bristol in 2008. Gale had just 1 top 5 and 3 top 10's in the first 14 races of the season (17.3 avg fin), but had 2 top 5's and 5 top 10's in the last 8 races (12.4 avg fin) to score the 9th most points over that stretch. Of the 9 first time winners in 2012, only 3 were rookies (i.e. classified as ROTY contenders): John King, Ty Dillon and Gale. Kyle Busch goes without a win in the Truck Series for the first time since 2004, although his 3 starts in 2012 (2nd, 4th, 2nd) are his fewest since that season (1). It's his 20th career runner-up finish in the Trucks, tied with Ted Musgrave for 4th all time. The #18 KBM team suffer their worst owners point finish in their 3 years of existence: 5th, after winning the championship in 2010 and finishing 2nd in 2011. Joey Coulter ends 2012 with 5 top 5's in the last 7 races (3 in the first 15 races of the season), outscoring the competition by 16 points over that stretch to finish 3rd in the standings (7th as a rookie in 2011). In fact, Coulter had 10 finishes of 7th or better in the last 12 races of the season (5.75 avg fin) to make up 54 points on the points lead and go from 8th to 3rd in the standings. Nelson Piquet Jr. finishes up 2012 with a career-best 4 straight top 10 finishes, which included 3 finishes of 4th or better. Despite suffering 5 DNF's, Piquet Jr. ended up 3rd in top 5 finishes this season with 9 (10 top 10 finishes as a rookie in 2011). Piquet Jr. also led the series in poles in 2012 with 4. After finishing no better than 8th in the first 21 races of the season (4 top 10's), Miguel Paludo picks up his first and only top 5 of 2012, the 4th of his career in 51 Truck Series starts, to finish 10th in the standings. It's an improvement from 17th in 2011, despite fewer top 10's (5 vs. 7, but 13.9 avg fin versus 18.1). Johnny Sauter finishes 6th for just his 9th top 10 of the year and ended up 9th in the standings with 6 top 5's, all career-lows since joining Thorsport full time in 2009 (13, 6th and 7 in '09, respectively, were his previous lows). Parker Kligerman picked up his 2nd pole of 2012 and of his career, and finished 7th for his 8th finish of 9th or better (6 top 5's) in 11 races with Red Horse Racing this season. He's the first driver to finish top 5 in points in NCWTS despite driving for multiple teams since Todd Bodine in 2005. Of the 4 2011 rookies who ran full time in 2012, all improved in the points standings versus their rookie campaigns: Coulter (from 7th to 3rd), Kligerman (from 11th to 5th), Piquet Jr. (from 10th to 7th) and Paludo (from 17th to 10th). Timothy Peters ends 2012 with 6 straight top 10 finishes, capping off by far his best season in Trucks. Peters set career high's across the board: wins (2), top 5's (10), laps led (402), avg start (7.5), avg fin (8.3) and finish in the standings (2nd). It's also the best finish for Red Horse Racing in the standings in their 8 seasons in the Trucks (previous best was 4th in 2006 with David Starr). Justin Lofton started 2012 with 7 consecutive top 10 finishes to lead the standings by 5 points, but had just 6 top 10's in the last 15 races of the season to end up 8th, -98. But Lofton had only 11 top 10's combined in his first two seasons in the Trucks (12th in pts in 2010, 14th in 2011). Ross Chastain picks up his 4th top 10 of the season, his first in 9 races. In the 17 races where he didn't have to S&P, Chastain had 1 top 5, 4 top 10's and an 18.6 avg fin in his rookie season. After averaging 12.8 top 5's per season from 2005 to 2010, Todd Bodine has back-to-back seasons with just 5 and has a career-low in top 10's for a 2nd straight year (11 in 2011, 7 in 2012). Bodine had finished 6th or better in the standings each of the last 7 seasons but ends up 14th this year. Matt Crafton finishes in the top 10 in points for the 8th time in the last 9 seasons, but has now gone win-less in 10 of his 12 full seasons in the Trucks despite leading the series in top 10's since 2001 (155). James Buescher wins the 2012 championship, despite 14 top 10's that are the fewest by a champion in series history; the previous worst was 15 by Ted Musgrave in 2005 (25 races, versus 22 in 2012). German Quiroga bounces back from his Phoenix wreck with his 2nd top 15 finish in 4 races in 2012 (best of 8th, 18.8 avg fin). Prior to 2012, Ron Hornaday averaged 12.1 top 5's and 17.25 top 10's in his 12 full seasons in the Trucks, winning at least 1 race and finishing no worse than 7th in the standings in all of them. In 2012, Hornaday went win-less while racking up just 2 top 5's, 6 top 10's and finishing 13th in points in his 1st season with Joe Dennette Motorsports. Wrecks in the last two races of 2012 cost Ty Dillon the championship, cost him a shot at tying the rookie record for top 10's in a season (19 by Ricky Hendrick in 2001) and put him 4th in the standings at the end of the season. Cale Gale effectively ended Kyle Busch's streak of winning at least one Truck race in every season that he competed in. For the second consecutive year the winning points margin was 6 points, although last year should have been different since the #3 never got penalized for passing below the yellow line. Despite having 16 different winners this year, Ron Hornaday wasn't one of them making it his first full time season without a win. Put him in a Turner or Red Horse truck and he would have been a championship contender. The next driver who will win his first Truck race is likely Jason White. For one, it capped off an awesome season, but it also featured some great racing with guys giving it their all. There was also a good mix of drivers with guys like Kyle Larson, Nelson Piquet Jr., Parker Kligerman, Jason Leffler, Ron Hornaday Jr., among others, plus Cale Gale and Kyle Busch who were involved a great photo finish where Gale got him at the line. It is too bad that Gale hasn't been a regular in NASCAR since. I think he could've been a good Truck regular with the possibility of moving up. 49.
