Jeb Burton wins the pole in his 7th series start, Darrell Wallace Jr. qualifies 2nd in just his 2nd start, German Quiroga qualifies 5th and Chase Elliott, the first 16 year old to compete in a national touring series race since Kyle Busch in Trucks back in 2001, qualified 8th! And Brennan Newberry was 10th! 2. Kenny posted: 04.05.2013 - 6:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I can't whatever to see what chase and TY do :) 3. He was pretty exciting to watch at Daytona with all those risky passes he was making late in the race, and I'm anxious to see how well he, and fellow rookie Darrell Wallace, Jr., do when starting tomorrow's race from the front row. Also, is Devin Jones driving for Eddie Sharp Racing in this race, or is he just using their number since Justin Lofton is only running a part-time schedule this year? 6. At least 25 of these teams can get a top 10 and at least 15 of them can win. I'm really looking forward to this race, hopefully it cements the career of one of the young guns as they continue to climb the NASCAR ladder. 7. One of the exceptions, Johnny Sauter, qualified 4th while '09 Martinsville winner Timothy Peters was 3rd. I think the winner's going to come from that 2nd row. Harvick's in this race but in a Joe Denette truck and he only qualified 16th. He's won 2 of the last 3 spring Martinsville races but they were from pole. The last driver to win after qualifying 16th or worse was Jamie McMurray from 18th in 2004. 9. He was on the entry list in his #35 and the #6 was TBA (since Lofton could not find a sponsor and isn't racing this week) and changed his entry to #6 before the race, so he's still with his #35 team just using the #6. 11. Jeb Burton's driving style really reminds me of Ricky Stenhouse. He's got that "Swervin'" aspect to it. So he should be fun to watch from the pole today. My pick to win? I actually think that a veteran might outduel the young guys when it comes down to the end, so I think I'll go with either Hornaday, Sauter, or Crafton. 15. Chase is scheduled to run 9 races total this year: both Martinsville and Iowa dates as well as Rockingham, Dover, Bristol, Mosport, and Phoenix. Those are all the tracks 16 and 17 year old drivers are eligible to race in in Trucks. Did anyone see Matt Crafton in this race? He was racing for every spot like a mad man. And his post race interview. The insane confidence he had in his voice about him and his team. The secret to winning is working harder and harder and harder on what you want to succeed at it. Making success your livelyhood. That determines success. I can tell already Crafton will contend for the title. He is my pick to win the title. I have complete confidence in this pick. If Sauter can find the motivation Crafton has it will be them 2 battling it out for the title. That's the reason Timothy Peters will never be a NASCAR champion. I have never seen a guy happier in my life to finish 2nd in points. I don't know if I ever will. 127. Someone like Crafton is just going to keep on winning once every 5 years and never winning a championship because he thinks he's better than he is. Johnny Sauter's someone who deserves to be plenty confident considering what he's done since joining Thorsport, and if the bad luck and mistakes he and the team have had the past two years are behind them then this could be a runaway championship. 128. 18fan posted: 04.07.2013 - 2:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Turner Scott Motorsports chose Kyle Larson over Kasey Kahne to drive in the Rockingham race, so there will be no Cup drivers in that race. 129. They lost it being hard on the brakes with the incident right in front of them. Too much rear brake for the position they were put in, or shoddy technique :) Pick your poison. Those type of spins can be understandable, especially when they don't result in any damage. 130. joey2448 posted: 04.07.2013 - 4:28 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The only reason I wouldn't peg Matt Crafton as the favorite for the title is the fact that he simply does not win much. Two career Truck wins in almost 300 starts does not make a champion. I think his confidence level is perfect. That's probably something he's honed and perfected over the years; treading that thin line between confidence and cockiness. If he does win the championship this year (and I hope he does), it'll be due to his awesome consistency. 131. Rexrobe posted: 04.07.2013 - 8:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I made the trek (ok, 90 minute drive) up to Martinsville yesterday, so here are some thoughts. - Someone needs to tell Jeb and Darrell Wallace that the race was 250 laps, not 200. They both could have won it, but they raced way too hard from lap 150 to 200 and used up their equipment too early. But it's not like that's the last we see of them. - On the opposite hand Johnny Sauter had a bad truck, fixed it, and drove through the field smartly. His truck was handling well by halfway, but he took his time getting to the front and it paid off. - Also for Johnny, PASS ON THE OUTSIDE for the lead! That should make a highlight reel for sure. - Norm Benning's mechanical failure was legit. I think the 84 spun in some of his rear gear fluid as Norm's truck was smoking a bit. But the 84 - and the 07 - didn't need help spinning today. - Letting the 10 out on the track for the first time about 40 laps in was a joke. - Ron could have won the race had Jeb not wrecked him. He looked like the old Ron Hornaday today. - As much as I liked the old school racing before the first caution, with a strung out field fighting traffic, I also was glad for the wave around rule. It helped a lot of drivers out today. - Finally, the crowd was EXCELLENT. Almost pre-2008. But I did hear a lot of people saying they aren't sticking around for tomorrow - 500 laps is a tough sell for all but the diehards. The new Cup cars do look much better in person than on TV, though. 132. Talon64 posted: 04.08.2013 - 4:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 2009 was a pretty amazing season as far as consistency for Crafton, a 6.7 average finish and 21 top 10's in 25 races. 11 top 5's too. It wasn't that far off from Hornaday's 6.4. But Crafton only led 99 laps all year. Hornaday led 1,091 laps, had 6 wins and 15 top 5's to just completely wipe the floor with him even though they were similarly consistent. It's the mission statement of his career: He can rattle off those top 10's, and about a third of those have been top 5's for him, but he just does not run up at the front much at all (533 career laps led in 296 starts! That's just 1.15% of his completed laps! That's 26th in the series since 2001!) and it's always going to keep him from being a championship-caliber driver. Especially since it took Sauter joining Thorsport for them to have their biggest success and become a legit championship-contending team. I'll give Thorsport more credit than I will Crafton for that 2009 season. 136. Ty (fourturns.blogspot.com) posted: 04.08.2013 - 1:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It was a pretty good race. Was really hoping we would see a young guy pull off the upset, i.e. Jeb Burton, Bubba Wallace, Chase Elliott or Erik Jones. Was also glad to see Kevin Harvick have problems, as I did not want him (the lone Cup driver) to win the race -- so sick of the Cup guys stealing wins from the N'wide & Truck guys. (I like Harvick, by the way, but still didn't want him to win). Anywho, the young guns drove exceedingly well Saturday. Jeb Burton in 3rd, Bubba Wallace in 5th, Chase Elliott in 6th, Dakoda Armstrong in 7th, Ryan Sieg in 8th and Erik Jones in 9th. The future of NASCAR is definitely bright. Good run by my guy Matt Crafton with a second-place finish. That was also his 296th consecutive start, tying Terry Cook for the most all-time. He should break the streak next week at Rockingham and hopefully, pull out a win in the process. The ThorSport guys seem to be very dangerous this season with Sauter going two-for-two and Crafton finishing ninth and second, respectively. Todd Bodine has done well too with back-to-back 11th-place finishes. The ThorSport guys are definitely dangerous this year. I think the season is setting up to be fairly exciting. May not be as exciting as 2012, but there is so much talent, it's borderline ridiculous. So excited to see the guys go back to Rockingham next weekend. Wish the Cup and N'wide Series would return, but that likely won't happen. Regardless, it's gonna be a great race this weekend and we could see Sauter go three-for-three. 137.
