And the final seven qualifiers were between 11-34 MPH off the pole. You wonder if NASCAR should begin to set a minimum qualifying speed standard for some of these races where they either have a short field or just enough cars/truck to fill the field based on a projected pole speed, unless there's a legitimate problem or a crash on the qualifying attempt. I know a number of those at the back of the field only plan on running a few laps and parking it, but that spread is utterly ridiculous. And the Nationwide race didn't even draw a full field of cars, as the last time I checked, only 38 cars showed up for a race with a 40-car field. And even the Cup race only drew enough cars to fill the field of 43, and that's only because they have to have a full field for the Cup race, or NASCAR doesn't get half the TV money for this weekend's race, as per the bylaws of the TV contract. If not for that, the Cup race might also have had a short field this week. The start-and-parks, which have decreased this year, may return with a vengeance this week, as this is the time of the year where start-and-parks are usually at their highest. 4. murb posted: 05.31.2013 - 12:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cool to see that this race will be shown live after being on tape delay for all those years. Paul posted: 05.31.2013 - 1:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Cool to see that this race will be shown live after being on tape delay for all those years." It was shown live last year too, by the way. "You wonder if NASCAR should begin to set a minimum qualifying speed standard for some of these races where they either have a short field or just enough cars/truck to fill the field based on a projected pole speed, unless there's a legitimate problem or a crash on the qualifying attempt." NASCAR needs their TV money, so shortening the field at the expense of revenue would be among the last things on their mind. A few of those trucks aren't going to run the full distance anyways, and those that do plan on running the entire race that are too slow will be black flagged and/or parked if they can't maintain a reasonable speed. 6. cjs3872 posted: 05.31.2013 - 1:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Paul, the TV money thing, which I did mention, only exists for the Cup Series. That does not involve either the Nationwide or Truck Series. And in some cases, NASCAR can't flag the cars/trucks off the track in time. What happened in the last 400-mile race at Darlington in 2004 was a graphic example of that when Andy Hillenburg got run over by Tony Stewart and then got T-boned by Jeff Gordon. But the fact that there's a 34+ MPH spread between the fastest and slowest qualifiers and each of the last seven qualifiers were more than 11 MPH off the pole speed is cause for concern because NASCAR may not be able to flag them off the course fast enough, because there may be too many of them for NASCAR to deal with at one time. 7. That shows Stewart's impatience more than anything. Hillenburg may have been very slow, but there are two ways to pass another driver: Around and through. Stewart chose the latter because he had no patience, and it cost Gordon a chance at a good finish. Another such example would be the Nationwide race at Dover last spring when Joey Logano, who was leading and had the best car in the field, threw all of that away and almost cost himself the victory when he dumped the lapped car of Tim Bainey, Jr. in a turn. Had he tried to pass Bainey on the outside or just waited for the straightaway, he would have made the pass, not wrecked a race car, and not given the rest of the field a chance to pounce on his impatience. "But the fact that there's a 34+ MPH spread between the fastest and slowest qualifiers and each of the last seven qualifiers were more than 11 MPH off the pole speed is cause for concern because NASCAR may not be able to flag them off the course fast enough, because there may be too many of them for NASCAR to deal with at one time." Just like what Denny Hamlin said at the Sprint Unlimited earlier this year in regards to that eliminator fan vote, the drivers will likely do the eliminating themselves before an outside force can force them off the track. Chris Lafferty and Johnny Chapman will start-and-park, as they were both recently added to the entry list for very small teams. Chris Jones, Mike Harmon, and Jennifer Jo Cobb are likely to start-and-park as well given their small teams (although Cobb will probably stay on the track longer before retiring from the event). The only drivers I would really watch out for are Danny Efland, Kyle Martel, and Norm Benning. Those may be the only chicane trucks out there today (and Efland is talented enough not to be one). I don't think it's nearly as bad as you think it's going to be. 8. Paul posted: 05.31.2013 - 2:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) James Buescher hit the wall during his qualifying lap, and will go to a backup truck for the race. Is anyone else as confused as I am about no team putting the #6 on their truck for this race? That number is locked into every field based on its number of attempts and place in the owner's standings. If I was Eddie Sharp, I would have been trying to negotiate a deal with RSS Racing or Jennifer Jo Cobb Racing about changing their part-time start-and-park trucks (#38 and #0, respectively) to #6 just to keep that truck locked in for when Justin Lofton comes back. Speaking of ESR, his full-time driver Max Gresham seems to be coming into his own lately, with a 9th place qualifying effort at Kansas, a surprising 3rd place finish at Charlotte (his first career top ten finish), and now a 9th place qualifying effort this week as well. I think he's finally getting the hang of these trucks, and could become a regular top 10-15 contender as the season wears on. 9. 83andJoe posted: 05.31.2013 - 2:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) >And the Nationwide race didn't even draw a full field of cars, as the last time I checked, only 38 cars showed up for a race with a 40-car field. And add Joey Coulter to that list of young drivers that Kyle Busch may be trying to develop for Joe Gibbs. And by the way, Ford has no extra wing organization to develop drivers, as Roush tries to develop driers from within his own organization, though he is using the Wood Brothers at the Cup level to develop Trevor Bayne somewhat, and Penske is not currently developing any young drivers, choosing instead to try to get Sam Hornish, Jr. back into the Cup Series. Penske passed Justin Allgaier off to Turner Motorsports, Parker Kligerman to Kyle Busch Motorsports (JGR's development arm), and aren't doing that much with Ryan Blaney, though he's using Brad Keselowski's Truck team to try to develop Blaney, as well as Ross Chastain. What's happening is that these Cup team owners can't afford diver development programs of their own day because of the potential of losing a lot of equipment, so they're aligning themselves with existing Nationwide and Truck Series teams to try to develop drivers for them, and Gibbs is using Kyle Busch to do that for him, just as Hendrick is using JR Motorsports and Turner Motorsports, and now Penske's using Brad Keselowski's Truck Series team to try to develop drivers. 130. I'd be okay if Kyle did the "big truck races" like one of the road courses, Daytona, Eldora and maybe Bristol but not on a weekly basis. Honestly I think that Kyle wants to put somebody else in the truck if he can but the sponsors only want Kyle because if he dips into the series, he's going to win. Why sponsor some young kid and go through ups and downs when you can have Kyle, who has an established fan base and wins ~50% of the truck races he's in these days. The Truck series just doesn't have the appeal that the N'Wide series has where some of the older vets (Sadler) or guys who didn't get a good first chance (Regan Smith, Sorenson) and guys who are out due to some weird reason (Vickers) are there to resurrect their careers and go back to Cup. The elder statesmen in Truck are staying in Trucks because they can't make it elsewhere, it's becoming like Arca. 133. 83andJoe posted: 06.01.2013 - 1:11 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) -Matt Crafton's 300th start. -James Buescher's 100th start. >Honestly I think that Kyle wants to put somebody else in the truck if he can but the sponsors only want Kyle because if he dips into the series, he's going to win.
