If I recall correctly, they had to pit late at both Texas and Homestead in 2011 because they didn't have enough to get to the end. And of course Brad ran dry at Michigan two weeks ago, so while they are good at fuel mileage they have gotten bit by it several times. 42. 18fan posted: 06.27.2013 - 9:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Don't really know what Kyle was doing right there. 43. I'm also reading this race should have been Ryan Blaney's second win if it weren't for Kyle Busch? And a average night for Jeb Burton when he had a chance to gain a lot of points on Crafton? Terrible night in my books. 86. 18fan posted: 06.27.2013 - 11:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wallace was racing hard with Blaney and got loose under Blaney and hit the wall. Blaney might have come down on Wallace, but it was hard for me to tell. Blaney was catching Kyle and tried to pass him on the outside. Kyle might have gotten loose, not known Blaney was on his outside, or tried to block, but, whatever the case actually was, Blaney hit the wall and his truck was never the same. Kyle's truck faded like crazy on the last run and once Blaney hit the wall, Kyle held off Dillon for a few laps before Dillon went past for the lead and the win. 87. He may be a fast driver, but I don't see much of a future for him if keeps crashing like this, and I don't think Kyle Busch likes the idea of having to fix multiple trucks every week. He got two more crashed tonight. If he (Wallace) keeps crashing, he'll be out of a job, because nobody wants a driver that crashes practically every other time he goes out, and I think he's starting to get a reputation as a driver that crashes, and that doesn't get you anywhere in NASCAR, because a driver that crashes is also one that doesn't finish races, and in racing, you actually have to finish the race to place well. If he doesn't stop crashing, I think Wallace's days in top-flight equipment may be numbered, and he may either be irrelevant or even out of NASCAR's top series in three years. 89. Within just a few laps of taking the lead, Dillon pulled 5 seconds clear, so he had everyone covered at the end, most likely including Blaney. 91. Baker posted: 06.27.2013 - 11:22 pm Rate this comment: (5) (0) cjs, whoa whoa whoa. You need to slow down. Darrell Wallace has only 12 starts in the Top 3 series and to my knowledge has 3 wrecks. It is not a great percentage but it is only his first dozen starts. He will be fine. He has a great head on his shoulders. IMO the only thing he has to worry about is losing sponsorship in a southern sport because no one wants to promote a black driver. Once he learns to turn these Top 5 runs into Top 5 finishes then he won't even need to worry about sponsorship. 92. Other than tonight's race and those two DNFs, he's finished in the top 12 in every race. There's no question he has speed, but there's more to racing than just speed. I've railed on Jack Roush because of his treatment of drivers, among other things, but doing what he did with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. a few years ago may have saved his career. Now it's obvious that Kyle Busch Motorsports is not JGR, though it's probably JGR's development arm. But Kyle Busch Motorsports can not afford to have trucks wrecked at this pace, but it seems like one or two get wrecked every race. Wallace certainly is not he only culprit, as Joey Coulter wrecked at the end of the race, but at least his wreck is somewhat understandable. But the reason I say that Wallace has got to be careful is, when a driver gets a reputation for crashing, whether it's deserved or not, it's going to follow him for years, if not the rest of his career, and the way he's going, he could throw away his career, if he's not careful. The only driver other than Kyle himself that ever really did anything in Kyle Busch's trucks was Aric Almirola, and I think it's for a very simple reason, and it's the same reason he's done so well with Richard Petty. He finishes races. And that's the most important thing, especially for a driver that's developing. After all, what good does having speed mean if you're not on the track at the finish because your vehicle is out of the race or limping around the track because of a wreck. And the problem with Darrell Wallace's crashes are that most of them have been self-inflicted. He's got the speed. Now, he's got to harness it, because speed is no good if you can't control it, and right now, he's having a hard time controlling it. And even worse, it doesn't seem like he's learning from his mistakes. And 13, the difference is that Kyle Larson seems to be learning from his mistakes, while Wallace hasn't quite done that yet. If he does, I think he'll be around for a long time, but if he doesn't, I don't think he'll be around that long because car owners don't want drivers that tear up their cars, especially in this economic climate. A reputation for crashing is the worst thing a driver can get, and Wallace seems well on his way to that if he's not careful. 101. ch posted: 06.28.2013 - 12:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor change: 31 - Fraternal Order of Eagles 102. murb posted: 06.28.2013 - 1:24 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) "It's one thing to have DNFs due to crashes, but it's another to just throw one good finish after another away with crashes, especially those born from a lack of discipline, and that's what I've seen." Out of 8 races he's run in the Truck Series this year, he has finished outside of the top 12 only three times. Those three times were tonight, the Hornaday incident at Rockingham, and the Charlotte crash. Tonight and Charlotte were the only ones where he messed up and it was his own fault. So no, he isn't "throwing away one good finish after another". He's done it exactly two times. He's a young driver, and stuff like this happens to young drivers. You are making it seem like he's out there wrecking himself and others every week when he's not. 103. How long was Jimmy Spencer actually relevant, or in good equipment? The answer to that is not very long. He drive for Bobby Allison for a little over one year when his team was on the verge of becoming competitive, one year for Junior Johnson, when he scored both of his victories, but did little else, and then one year for Chip Ganassi many years later, where he vastly underperformed compared to Sterling Marlin. That means that Spencer was relevant for a just over three years, which was not very long, given the actual length of his career, which actually lasted about 20 years, but rarely in good equipment because of his reputation for crashing both himself, as well as others. 106. One of the fortunate things for Gordon was that he had a mentor in Ken Schrader, who he had raced against in USAC, and I think his relationship with Schrader helped him more than people think. And although they don't race on the same team, I think Kyle Larson has that in Tony Stewart, and Ricky Stenhouse found that somewhat with Carl Edwards, though I still don't think Edwards is the kind of guy a driver would want as a mentor, but since Stenhouse and Edwards had the same background, Edwards could serve as a mentor to a degree. I'm not sure Darrell Wallace, Jr. has that yet. Certaonly he can't use Kyle Busch as a mentor. My best advice to him is to have Matt Kenseth help him along as much as he can, since he is a JGR development driver. If he does that, then he'll be ahead of where Gordon was 21 years ago and where Larson and Stenhouse are now, because Kenseth would be a perfect mentor for Darrell Wallace, Jr., or anyone else that might be a JGR development driver for as long as Kenseth is there. 110. Arguing that he's "prone to wrecking" on this basis is premature at best and indicates a lack of knowledge of the sport at worst. But apparently Johnny had a little more money and the ride went to him. I'm glad it did because Johnny has turned into a force in the Truck Series. Before he got that Truck ride, he was looking like he was gonna be just another "good NNS driver, terrible Cup driver" guy. But now he's becoming one of the most notable Truck guys of this era, so I'm happy that the 13 truck went to him instead of Sprague. I doubt Sprague would have been able to do as well as Johnny has done at Thorsport thus far, and I doubt that he'd be able to do any better than Todd Bodine did in that 13 truck this year. The move that he made at Kansas back in 2008 has to be one of the dumbest moves I've ever seen a driver make (coincidentally right along with Stenhouse's 5-wide move at Talladega which created The Big One), and he's intentionally wrecked Brad Keselowski twice, both of which could have caused Brad serious injury, and never apologized for either. That's not a very good resume for someone who you want to mentor a younger driver, especially someone as reckless as Stenhouse. "Meanwhile, NASCAR is looking at introducing the "Truck of Tomorrow" starting next year" Note to NASCAR: don't implement wings in the Trucks. It was bad enough in Cup, with drivers going upside down every fourth race. We don't need that in Truck, too. "it's more likely you'll see Harry Gant back in a truck." That would be awesome! For a driver already on thin ice, for a driver that has already torched bridges at Roush and Hendrick, doing that was not only complete BS, it caused a lot of tense behind the scenes discussions about releasing him from JGR which would have pretty much been the end for him. Were it not for his OUT OF THIS WORLD talent (which he still hasn't come close to capitalizing on) he would be done by being an idiot. At least when Gordon pulled his stunt at Phoenix last year he had 20 years of good behavior to lean back on, 4 Winston Cups in his back pocket, and an owner and sponsors who could easily forgive that. But I will say Lepage's move was the dumbest in the moment, on its own, moment. I personally thought Carl's Kansas move was pure genius. And I don't like Carl one bit! Since both of them came from a dirt racing background, Stenhouse could lean more on Edwards than on any of Roush's other drivers in 2010-'12, cause Edwards would have been experiencing a lot of the same things that Stenhouse would have, in terms of the feel of the cars. That's why I said that Stenhouse could look to Edwards as somewhat of a mentor. That's also one big reason why Jeff Gordon was lucky to have Ken Schrader as a teammate, because they also had the same background before coming to NASCAR, and even raced against Schrader some in USAC, so Schrader could be a good mentor for Gordon, and having Terry Labonte didn't hurt, either, because Labonte came off to me as one of those guys that liked to mentor other drivers and bring them along. I also think that Labonte had quite a bit to do with Jimmie Johnson's fast climb to the top of NASCAR's top series, because when Gordon was going through his marital problems during Johnson's rookie season, Labonte was right there to pick up the slack, and I believe he mentored Johnson in much the same way he and Schrader mentored Gordon in Gordon's early years. That's why I think guys like Darrell Wallace, Jr. and Parker Kligerman, both of whom are now JGR development drivers through Kyle Busch Motorsports, should try to get Matt Kenseth to help them when they get the chance, because Kenseth can act as a mentor to them much the same way that Mark Martin ad Jeff Burton helped Kenseth when Kenseth first arrived in the Cup Series in 1999 and 2000. And if they don't, they're just plain dumb. That's the kind of mentoring that I think Ricky Stenhouse needs, and isn't getting this year. Otherwise, I'm almost certain he'd be doing better than he is, because he's just barely hanging on to a spot in the top 20 in points, and I think he could actually drop out of the top 20 if he isn't careful. The one thing about Stenhouse this year that I didn't think he'd be able to do with as much regularity is that he's actually finishing races, which I thought would be difficult for him to do. He's just not running that well, and that's surprising to me. I thought his problem would be fast cars and wrecks, not poor runs resulting in mid-pack finishes. He has caused a few crashes (most notably at Charlotte), but he's usually been able to escape them without becoming involved himself. In other words, he's probably where I thought he'd be in points, but not for the reasons I suspected. 138.
