Well, this is it. Either this is going to be as awesome as the overwhelming majority of us predicted it would be, or this will be a HUGE disaster like several naysayers have said it was going to be. I REALLY don't want to see the naysayers proven right. 11. 83andJoe posted: 07.24.2013 - 6:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) >There were 36, but the 93 RSS Racing team of Ryan Sieg withdrew on Tuesday. According to Jayski's, Chris Jones was supposed to be in that truck, although with Austin in the 39 Sieg would have made more sense. Any reason given? Also Chris Lafferty was listed in the JJC #0 on the original entry list. 12. 83andJoe posted: 07.24.2013 - 7:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Format reminder: only the top 20 trucks in owners' points are locked in this week, and only 30 trucks will start the main event. Each eight-lap heat race will transfer four locked-in trucks and one GOGH truck to the main event. A 15-lap hooligan race will fill spots 26-30, UNLESS a past champion remains unqualified, in which case it will fill spots 26-29 and 30th will be filled using the past champion's provisional. 13. Zackary Shawn posted: 07.25.2013 - 1:02 am Rate this comment: (5) (0) This race shows what I think are two of the biggest problems facing NASCAR. Well, really it's one big problem but it's easier to break it down into two. 1) All, but 3 tracks are owned by the same two publicly traded companies as all of you know. There is, essentially, no competition for which tracks get on the schedule meaning that the owners of the tracks can do whatever they want (essentially build the same track over and over again in a different city) and charge whatever they want since they know they don't have to worry about losing their spot on the schedule. The individual tracks might lose their dates, but the track owners themselves won't since they will just replace it with another track they own. This is only made even more true when the the owners of one of those companies own NASCAR itself. It is business 101 that competition is essential in a free market economy. Without competition the consumers (in this case NASCAR fans) suffer because they feel like they don't have a choice and the business itself (NASCAR) suffers because fans will slowly stop coming due to the inevitable higher prices that will ensue. 2) As I mentioned earlier the tracks these companies are publicly traded, meaning they have shareholders. The #1 mission of a public traded company is to increase profits for shareholders, not provide good racing to the fans. A mile-and-a-half track in a major city is going to be more profitable than a three-quarter mile track in the backwoods of Georgia so that's just the way it's going to be. I actually don't have a problem with large tracks or racing in big cities, but again the problem is a lack of competition. There is no motivation to make the tracks exciting. So NASCAR gets a big fat "F" when it comes to Business 101. If the track owners knew their spots on the schedule weren't secure they would have to step up their game to make the race track more competitive in the market, otherwise exciting tracks, like Eldora, would swoop in and take up their spots on the schedule. It blows my mind that NASCAR sees this as a sustainable long term business model. Obviously, another big part of this is the fact that NASCAR gets so much of its revenue from TV deals, but I was just focusing on the tracks and attendance. Side note: I'm not a business expert so I'm sure I got some details wrong, but I tried my best. 256. 83andJoe posted: 07.25.2013 - 1:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) note to the Webmaster, the qualifiying heats and LCS aren't displaying on the 'other races' page. 257. As long as there are shareholders involved, then the first priority will always be maximizing profits for them. And I'm not putting down publicly traded companies because they can be a great source of wealth if you invest at the right time in the right company, but there is a huge difference between Apple who maximizes profits through innovation and ISC/SMI whose maximum profits come from putting butts in the seats. Can't have butts in the seats if you don't have the seats and you can't have the seats if your track isn't big enough for them, thus the mile-and-a-half to two mile cookie cutters. "Did anyone else imagine NASCAR ditching indy can moving to Eldora for this raceweekend?? and starting a new NASCAR tradition of "the digging of the dirt"" Very unlikely NASCAR will ditch Indy after the hard work it took to get there and, frankly, I personally don't want them to because, even though the race isn't that good, I really enjoy the history, and the pomp and circumstance. I can understand not building another 160,000 seat short track, but there isn't any reason there couldn't be another Martinsville/Richmond like track that holds 60,000-90,000 people. However, my guess is that after the first real cookie cutter boom (which I believe really started with the reconfiguration of Atlanta and the building of Texas and Las Vegas), everybody saw how successful they were and decided that was the model that should be followed from that moment forward. I can understand that mindset, though I think it was shortsighted because it was obvious that NASCAR in general was growing. With that said, and call me crazy, I don't remember the cookie cutters being all that bad until very recently. I've been watching NASCAR for 14 years and I remember there being some really enjoyable races at Vegas, Atlanta, Texas, and Charlotte. I never remember a good race at Chicagoland or Kansas though, but those came later. I almost feel like the cookie cutters have gotten a bad rep in in recent years due to things caused by the COT more than the the tracks being bad themselves. Besides, I've thought all of the cookie cutters have actually been fairly decent races this year (probably 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5 to most if not all of them.) 273. I have been watching him for several years and he is a phenomenal wheelman. He has been shattering track records and winning at a ridiculous pace every time he enters a new series until Nationwide which is a complete different discipline than he is used to and will obviously take more time. Tonight he proved he was by far the most talented dirt tracker in the field despite not winning. He drove through the field like it was nothing and as always the leader gets the worst of lapped traffic. After Dillon got by he kept getting stuck on the inside lane for restarts and then NASCAR had to throw there bogus debris caution so Dillon didn't have to worry about the lapped cars coming up with 10 to go. At that point all 3 were nose to tail and I'm 100% confident Kyle Larson would have come out on top without that last caution. Those of you complaining about Kyle Larson starting 13th and then darn near lapping half that field obviously don't watch much dirt track racing. It is very typical for the leader to lap up to and even into the Top 10 especially on nights with a long green period like tonight. On dirt you either nail the set up or you don't and those that don't are fighting the car all night. Everyone around Dave Blaney tonight was an A-hole it seemed or he could have been one of those 3 battling for the lead. Everyone wanted to bounce him around. All the heat races and the "last chance qualifier" are a complete joke and waste of time when you have 20-30 locked into the race. When you have that many heats and a last chance the Top 10-20 in points shouldn't need a lock if they were truly that good. Dumb the locked in rules for the dirt if you want bigger fields and more excitement for the heats. Great race, pathetic finish, even worse winner. 278. 83andJoe posted: 07.25.2013 - 6:53 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Why would they change a thing? The race was /incredible/. Don't screw it up. 279. Where do you people come up with the idea that who ultimately wins the race shouldn't play a role in how you perceive that race? As I've mentioned before on here, I am a student at Auburn University. By your logic, if the Iron Bowl is a close game, but Alabama wins it would be "lame" for me to say I didn't like the game. To use a line I've used before, only a NASCAR fan could be that arrogant. I don't know any other fan base on the Earth that would call someone lame over something like that. But what was so great about Martinsville? Was it the part where one driver (an unlikeable driver who already had won there 7 times) led 70% of the entire race? Was it Danica finishing 12th? Or was it the part where acknowledging Martinsville wasn't that great would hurt the argument that there should be more races like it? As far as Daytona...how many green flag passes for the lead were there? 3 maybe? Certainly, less than the 500 and everyone hated that race. Both Daytona races failed to live up to what they were in the past, thus low ratings. I'm sorry it's so lame of me to not like to see the same guy cruising around with the lead for the majority of a race, especially when he's an unlikeable driver. I think we all tend to do this. A race can be a real snoozer if Johnson wins but an instant classic if Bobby Labonte or Jeff Burton can sneak into victory lane. On the Nationwide side, the race can be a total 300 mile parade when Busch wins but if Morgan Shepherd or Johanna Long somehow, someway were to win it would then be the most awesome race in the history of the universe. 293. A race can be a real snoozer if Johnson wins but an instant classic if Bobby Labonte or Jeff Burton can sneak into victory lane. On the Nationwide side, the race can be a total 300 mile parade when Busch wins but if Morgan Shepherd or Johanna Long somehow, someway were to win it would then be the most awesome race in the history of the universe." Again, you say that as if there is some sort of grading rubric I have to strictly follow. I don't understand why everyone on here acts like they should all have the same points of view. Obviously, it was MY list and Talladega and New Hampshire both entertained ME a lot. How can you say my own personal point of view overrates someone, when it is MY point of view? Yep, it would be great if we could all put on blinders and view things objectively, but we can't. That's not the human condition. And would it really be better if we were like that? Subjectivity is what creates passion, the y'all vs. us/us against them mentality if you will. It is what makes sports, and life in general, fun. Well, a lot of things actually. I'll sum-up what I learned on a big picture basis after this race alone. Feel free to add in what you learned from this race. - I didn't really learn this, but a theory of mine was proven to be correct. Less grip at lower speeds leads to better racing (outside of plate tracks). Avg. speeds around 80mph and a track like ice leads to some amazing racing even though passing was nearly impossible. - Stock Trucks definitly can put on a good show on dirt, and I see no reason why Stock Cars can't either. - AeroDynamics probably are the worst thing for high quality racing outside of a drafting race. It makes side by side racing dangerous (it wasn't last night). It makes what I like to call clean contact dangerous (it wasn't last night), and it gives an advantage to the leaders (this wasn't true last night if passing wasn't so hard). Of course, we learn this over again every time that the Cup Series goes to Bristol or Martinsville. hum.. Think Formula 1 before DRS. That's what heavy AeroDynamics get you. Oh, and high speeds as well. Wouldn't you think building a 120,000 seat 2/3 mile track would be easier and cheaper than a 120,000 seating 1.5 mile (thinking of Kentucky since it is the newest track on the Cup Schedule). Lighting as well. The money argument for a mile and a helf just doesn't work for me. It's better to watch a race in person as well on tv if the track is smaller, and the racing is generally better if not always. If Kentucky wasn't a 1.5 mile I probably would have went this year for the 3rd straight year, and I probably would have tickets already for next year, but as it is I never plan on going back. Nothing to do with the traffic at all. 310. Anonymous posted: 07.25.2013 - 5:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bloomquist completely laid an egg 311. I was shocked, admittedly, when it didn't turn into 30 trucks in a blender. There was some really hard racing going on. Ryan Newman and Kyle Larson drove super aggressively the whole race, and I know the broadcast missed some of it. Both should have wrecked out of this one if not for drivers cutting them huge breaks. Newman with some of the top 10 drivers he was passing, I know Crafton was one of them, and Larson with lap traffic. He should've wrecked with Newberry and Quiroga at points of the race while leading. But somehow they both made it. Seeing Norm Benning race his way in was incredible. After Greenfield roughed him up, I heard MRN say that everyone and his brother was over helping Norm fix his truck, including the Zaxby's guys. My instant thought was "Oh good, they know how to fix a truck. Norm's all set!" Never like seeing someone miss a race (unless a Cupper somehow missed a minor league race, big fat yeah right to that ever happening again), especially a historic event like tonight. Felt bad for the guys who didn't make it even as I was ecstatic Norm and the Wayne Hurricane did. It felt like a punch to the gut to watch Weller make that last ditch move to get in thinking how he must've felt as the truck went into that lazy spin. Felt bad for Greenfield too, he was on the outside looking in the whole race and just couldn't get it done. Everyone else pretty much covered everything about the race itself earlier, so I'll just add a few personal notes from my experience. First of all, they did a great job with traffic. Over 20,000 people were out of there within an hour. I stayed a bit longer to avoid the traffic, and was rewarded as they opened the track surface to fans around 12:15. I got myself a little piece of dirt, and while walking in Turn 4 found a piece of sheet metal about the size of a cereal box. It was the bottom right rear corner off a white truck. Pretty cool find I think. The track was pretty crowded just because it was small, but it never had the feel of a Michigan or Kentucky, where the people are more dense. Everything seemed to move pretty smoothly. I sat in the bleachers at the entrance to Turn 1 and took some video for YouTube of parts of the race. I'll link them once they're up if anyone wants to watch. The track had some electrical problems between the LCQ and the feature, with the lights and the PA system being affected. Speaking of which, (A)TNT has nothing on their PA guy. No less than 2 dozen times did I hear the entire name of this race when building excitement for the feature. He abbreviated it maybe once. Every other time he'd be talking when all of a sudden "The Car Cash Mudsummer Classic presented by CNBC Prime's The Profit." What a mouthful, yet he threw it out there every time! I don't think they mentioned this on the broadcast, but the track held a 50/50 raffle throughout the day up until before the feature. The track's half of the money raised went to Tony Stewart's foundation, and whoever won walked away with a staggering $17,000. Speaking of money, their concessions were the most reasonable I've ever seen anywhere. Sure, I paid $2 for a hot dog, but it was a good quality, pretty big dog. Their locally famous pizza burgers didn't disappoint either, the Eldora equivalent of a Martinsville hot dog apparently. $2.50 for one of those was well worth it. Finally, a few notes on some interesting fans there. After the race, Austin Dillon did a few interviews on the front stretch after the dirt digging and the hat dance. There was a woman and her 3 sons there who were apparently fans of his who kept calling out to him during his interview to come sign some stuff. Then, Scott Bloomquist, dressed in his KBM/Toyota Care fire suit and Toyota hat, walked up to Austin and congratulated him. Apparently congratulating the race winner makes you his brother, because they started yelling out to Scott, calling him Ty. Didn't end there though. Not 2 minutes after Austin left, a camera man wearing press credentials walked up to take some pictures of the fans standing along the fence, and they flipped out because that guy was Austin and Ty at the same time obviously. Some people, I tells ya. No alcohol assistance, the mother was the only one of age, no one else was even 5 years away. Overall, this was well worth the cost of tickets, food, and a 3 1/2 hour drive each way 318. 83andJoe posted: 07.25.2013 - 7:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) >I was there Tuesday and Wednesday in the garage and the 51 and the 10 were running with no front sway bar. As for the Daytona Night Race, there was tons of two and three wide racing and lots of jockeying for position. No, the lead wasn't hotly contested, but sometimes that happens. The 48 was absolutely on point that night, doesn't change the fact that exciting stuff was happening behind him. As far as your whole opinion that the winner of a race factors into how good the race was, yes, I think it's really lame and cheap to base a race on that. Just because someone you don't like wins a race doesn't change the fact that there may have actually been good racing up to the point that the winner crossed the line. It can't be the case because whether a race was enjoyable is completely subjective and has no objective or moral truth to it. That's what really pisses me off about him. He calls me "childish and whiny" because I have a different point of view than him and not only that, it's a point of view most people would say is completely normal. 346. All I've been trying to say this whole time is...as much as I love this site, I don't understand why so many of you on here only act like there is only one way to view the world of auto racing and that's it. It's arrogance at its finest and it really permeates from a lot of you. If you want to tell me that cheering for wrecks is wrong I'm all ears because there is a moral component to that, but don't tell others their opinions are wrong or lame just because people don't view things the way you do. 348. It was without a doubt one the best races of the NASCAR season (A Truck race with the best race of the season? Shocker!) Just a damn fun race from start to finish. I was glad to see Austin Dillon win. The only thing I didn't like about this race was the heat & last chance races. They seemed a bit hokey. The Cup Series needs to be racing on dirt in the future. Bruton Smith needs truck in some dirt to Bristol like he did for those World of Outlaw races in the early 00's and have truly epic race on the schedule. Of course we stand a better chance of that butt-head moving one of Bristol's race dates to Kentucky or reconfiguring Bristol into another TexCharLanta SMI Quad Oval Clone. I give this race a 9.5/10 349. I should have said some or several because most people on this site aren't like that and are open to disagreement without being disagreeable. 350. Look, for someone who, a few months ago, got so "testy and defensive" over an argument that he threatened to leave the site, I'm not sure I'd be talking. "Cool off. Grow some spheres and then come back to this discussion." You need to knock it off with the insults. I like you and all, but I can't really respect you as a commenter if you keep insulting people like that. 351. While there are some very cool-looking incidents, mainly nearly-anything with Kyle Larson in the final segments, it's not the type of thing that really appeals to me. Then again, I'm that weird guy who has seen some dirt track 'World of Outlaws' and 'Late Model racing' and stuff like that, and never really felt entertained. So in all honesty, my opinion automatically doesn't count because I don't really enjoy dirt track racing. But primarily, if this is going to be 'good' for the sport, I'd love to see a race at this track move to, at the least, Nationwide if it can continue bringing in fans, filling seats, and getting live TV coverage. However, I don't see that happening. Just like I couldn't see Autodromo or Montreal moving to cup when Nationwide was running there, and neither of those ever happened. 352.
