Strategy bit them tonight a bit. Should've spent less time on pit road, but a good run nonetheless. According to Jayski, via one of FS1's reporters, Ray Dunlap I believe, Chase could be the replacement for James Buescher in the 31 truck next year with Buescher moving to NNS. That pisses me off. Chase should be in the NNS next year with JR Motorsports. 114. joey2448 posted: 08.21.2013 - 10:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Honestly, JG24FanForever, I think Kyle just got lucky tonight. He pitted there on that caution with 21 laps to go and there were only 12 trucks on the lead lap (something like that), and he was able to gain a ton of spots on that restart mess when Brad got punted, which moved him all the way up to second! Then, he took advantage of a bobble by Ryan Blaney to win the race and barely held off Timothy Peters to do so. 115. Daniel posted: 08.21.2013 - 10:48 pm Rate this comment: (3) (1) #109, That's bull. There's a reason Iowa is always sold out, Eldora was sold out, Rockingham is always nearly packed, and Mid-Ohio was packed. People will show up to watch Nationwide and truck races if they are held at tracks that don't have cup races. If people came to see the cup guys, then the stands would be filled a lot more than they are at Indianapolis, Chicago, etc. 116. cjs3872 posted: 08.21.2013 - 10:54 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Yes, I don't know what FOX Sports 1 was doing missing that restart so close to the finish, but when it was SPEED covering the Truck Series, that kind of thing happened frequently because they would go to commercial break with about 10 laps to go frequently in their Truck Series races, so it's really no surprise they would do that, but that's a horrible first impression to make. First, why they would go to commercial under caution with under 10 laps remaining on a short track is beyond me, but then to miss the restart with 7 laps to go. It's almost as if there was a big miscommunication in the production truck, but it shouldn't matter. What the lead commentator, in this case Rick Allen, should have done was to overrule those in the production truck. Near the end of the 1978 Daytona 500, Jim McKay said just after the final restart, and with about 6 or 7 laps to go in the race, that they were scheduled for a commercial break at that time, but he basically overruled the ABC production truck and said that the racing was too important and that the racing was what they, the ABC broadcast team, came there for, so they just went with the remainder of he race and went to that break about 30-45 seconds after Bobby Allison took the checkered flag to win that race. Why the guys don't do that today is beyond me, because they're there to commentate and show racing, especially at that point in the event, because that's the most important part of the event. Take the break after the race, especially since you were going to have about a half an hour of air time after the race. Now maybe FS1 didn't know they were about to get the green flag and thought there would be an extra lap or two of caution, but that's no excuse. They should never have gone to a break at that time. CBS made that exact same mistake near the end of the 1980 Daytona 500, when they went to break with five laps to go, and nearly missed the fact that the race was going to end under caution due to a blown engine, and a historic race at that, because of the record speeds of that race, so FS1 aren't the only ones who have made that particular blunder. 117. murb posted: 08.21.2013 - 10:57 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "Chase should be in the NNS next year with JR Motorsports." If Moroso were 20 years old today, in 2013, which team would he be with and how fast would that team push him up the NASCAR ladder? It seems like today, everyone complains that young drivers are being rushed into the Nationwide and Cup series, but back in the late 80's and 90's, young drivers were in Cup sometimes by their third or fourth year in the nationals touring series. Jeff Gordon spent two years in Busch before making the jump, and Moroso was in Cup after three years in Busch cars. Of course, when you win the Busch title, it makes it easier. I'm all for gaining some experience before making the jump to Cup, but it seems like there's a lot of drivers today that just sit around in Trucks or Nationwide rides without doing anything, except for the Dillon bros. Just look at Trevor Bayne -- he won the frickin' Daytona 500 and he's still just running Nationwide cars (after a year in which he didn't run a full schedule in any series!). And the same goes for Blaney, Buescher Annett, Allgaier, Cole Whitt, Brian Scott, and Johanna Long. I know sponsorship woes are the biggest culprit, but man, it's frustrating seeing young talent just seemingly going nowhere. 129. To start things off, they commented on Ryan Blaney blending into the field without stopping at the end of the light on pit road. Is that a penalty? No one said. Did he line up correctly? Once again, no one confirmed that, even though it looks as if he did. Then, after the restart, things got more confusing. The top two trucks, especially the inside row with Crafton, got all jumbled up and resulted in Keselowski spinning and bringing out the caution. Once again, the FS1 crew didn't summarize where everyone was positioned at the scoring loops when that caution waved. There was only one confirmation of a position, when they said Peters had dropped to sixth after the restart. I wasn't upset at that point because I figured they would spend the caution period summarizing the previous restart, giving the restart lineup and setting up what was looking to be a wild finish. Instead, we get a break. No update on the three trucks that that had apparently ran out of gas, including points leader Matt Crafton and no update on defending Cup champion Brad Keselowski who had just spun out to bring the caution. At this point, I was extremely confused at what was going on. Then, as if things couldn't be more unorganized, the race breaks in as the field is speeding past to take the green flag with a handful of laps to go. I understand commercials drive these telecasts, but I bet there was more time spent on pre/post race shows than the race, itself. It was only 200 laps with limited caution flags, but had a three hour slot to fill. There should have been tons of opportunities to sneak in some extra advertising either before or after the race. 133. I hate being tough on him because he's been too nice to me during our brief exchanges in person. However, you can't let people walk all over you. I don't think you have to be a jerk and start punching on people whenever something doesn't go your way, but you must stand your ground or everyone will pile on. In this case, I think Joey was in the right, according to what was shown on track between him and Crafton. As if staying in his truck didn't make him seem weak, his interview confirmed it. Once again, he didn't have to sound macho to the audience, but he refused to throw any jabs to Crafton's side. Look at Kasey Kahne for instance. He has refused to fight back at all this season against the JGR crew. What does that mean? According to him, he's been crashed four times and hit on at least 11 occasions. Granted, most of those incidents have been "racin' deals", he has still yet to defend himself. When a competitor knows that he can walk all over the other guy, those "racin' deals" seem to be a little more prevalent from the aggressive person. 134. b4il3y posted: 08.22.2013 - 3:20 am Rate this comment: (2) (11) Kyle. Don't you think that someone like Jim McKay or Keith Jackson, from the old ABC Sports days, or Ken Squier form the old CBS Sports days, would have figured that out and told the viewing audience that. And as I stated, they should never have gone into break on that final caution, but as I said, when it was SPEED, they did that on the Truck Series races practically all the time. They always took their last break with about 10 laps to go, so is what happened really anything new? As I said, they should do what Jim McKay did near the end of the 1978 Daytona 500, and overrule the production truck, because that's exactly what he did when he said that they were scheduled for a commercial break (shortly before Buddy Baker lost his engine), but were not going to take it because the racing was too good and that's what they came there for, and instead took that commercial break about 30-45 seconds after Bobby Allison took the checkered flag. And as I also mentioned, CBS made that same mistake in the 1980 Daytona 500 and nearly missed the situation that caused that race to end under caution, so that mistake has been made before. And also, Matt Crafton may have had it easy for the first half of the season, as far as he championship is concerned, because he could pile up a big point lead with top 5-10 finishes, combined with the fact that nobody else was able to make any kind of run at him. However, now that James Buescher has gotten into second in points and is starting ook like he did last year, I think that's about to change, because I think Buescher, as evidenced by his charge at Michigan, is about to make a big run at Crafton, but first both must survive the next race, which is on a road course. I think after that race, and the race at Richmond the following week, Buescher is likely to make his charge at Crafton, and if he won two or three more races this season, it wouldn't surprise me. Crafton's biggest ally in a number of these races may be Kyle Busch, if he can keep the others that are trying to catch him from winning races. But Matt Crafton's about to have the heat turned up on him. 136. CBASS posted: 08.22.2013 - 10:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor updates #98 Carolina Nut Co. After all, Ken Schrader is 58 years old. That's one reason I think it's going to be very interesting to see what Mark Martin does in the #14 car. I think it's Mark's last shot in a competitive car, though it was great to see him so close to winning for a seventh time at Michigan. I just hope this doesn't backfire on SHR, because of Mark's age, because until the race at Michigan, Mark's not been very competitive much of the year in a car that has been frequently competitive, and even won a race, with Brian Vickers driving it. Let's just hope that Tony Stewart gets out of Martin what Dale Earnhardt got out of Darrell Waltrip in 1998, because Waltrip had more than a few good runs in DEI's #1 car that year, including beating Earnhardt himself head-to-head on more than one occasion, including passing Earnhardt to get his final top five finish at Fontana in 1998, a race Martin won, as well as leading a race at Pocono with 20 laps to go. Let's hope Martin can do as well filling in for Stewart in the #14 car in the 12 races he'll run it. 139. Nothing against Schrader, who many have called "the racer's racer" because of how often he's raced throughout his career, but the fact that a 58-year old can win shows just how watered down ARCA is. And his pole in the Truck Series event at Eldora is something that can be chalked up to experience, since he was, by far, the most experienced dirt driver in that field, with the possible exception of Scott Bloomquist, so he knew all the tricks to getting around that track, so his pole should not have been that big of a surprise. Schrader's expertise now is finishing races, which is why Frank Stoddard has him drive his car for a number of races every year. He knows that Schrader is not likely to tear anything up, which is important for that particular team, since it's the smallest of any team that runs the full race all the time in the Cup series. 142. So even if the truck didn't make a qualifying run, then they still should have been locked in since they ran a lap of practice. If they did withdraw, then the #10 should have been locked in since they are the 26th truck with all attempts this year. NASCAR is also giving the #10 an attempt even if they supposedly withdrew after blowing a motor. What I'm trying to get at is either the NASCAR owner's point are incorrect and the #10 / #84 shouldn't be listed as attempting this race, or NASCAR made a mistake with them DNQing. Seems like the prior to me, but if that's the case then there are now only 24 trucks who have attempted every single race this year. So who gets the 25th locked in spot?
