Earnhardt mostly dumped other drivers on the last lap or two and I can't remember him ever spinning himself out in the process. "Anyway, does anyone really care the Bubba Wallace is black? All I see is a good driver getting his first win." I care, because it's a great sign of progress for the sport. Everyone knows he never would have had the opportunity to win 30 years ago (even if he got a ride, he would never have had an opportunity to be a development driver for perhaps the best team in stock car racing) and it's good for the sport that we're now at a point where race no longer matters. When people say NASCAR is redneck and racist, there's now a tangible example of a successful black driver in modern times that makes that line of thinking look even dumber. As far as myself personally as a race fan, I couldn't care less, he's a great driver and he's fun to watch. The only colors that matter on the track are the colors of the vehicle. 180. All I care about is if 1) they're decent people and 2) something other than their color has earned them their job. I think Bubba Wallace passes both, so I don't care if he's black, white, Asian, Arab, Christian, Jew, gay, or anything else. It doesn't matter. They're just another driver. Isn't that what Civil Rights Movement was all about? Getting accepted as just another human, rather than scum. In the context of NASCAR, all that matters is that he can wheel the car/truck around well enough to justify having the ride. Race doesn't matter for me, he's just another good driver who got his first win today." We as race fans know that it doesn't matter. It's those who may be inclined to have interest in the sport and aren't so sure of the environment but hear all the stereotypes that get perpetuated who a win such as this is big for. But even so, it will still be looked at as "just a truck win." It won't be until a minority driver, possibly Wallace, has success in Cup that a lot of those stereotypes will finally die (Juan Pablo Montoya has won races, but he's largely seen as only competitive at the road courses even though he's had a number of great drives on the ovals as well). For us as race fans, it's just a great driver winning as we know the sport is not discriminatory and opportunities are there for anyone who can drive a race car, but for the sport itself, it's great to have a prominent example to prove that to those who aren't yet fans and disagree with what the sport is stereotyped out to be. It's all about the image the sport projects, some people may like auto racing but not want to be associated with a sport that is seen as "redneck" (this stereotype in particular should already be dead; there are only a handful of drivers in Cup full-time who are even from the South) and/or "racist." I don't root for any driver to succeed just because of their race (I like Bubba but for his driving style and obvious talent), but I see what it means for the sport when a minority driver is successful. Bubba rightfully earned his place in the sport by being talented and his race has nothing to do with it, and I'm sure the only "race" on his mind right now is the one that he just won. 194. So congrats Bubba Wallace, on the first of many wins!!! 206. Neb posted: 10.26.2013 - 5:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kevin Harvick channeled his inner CM Punk in that interview. Now if he would just go out, win a championship after a hard fought race and then blow a kiss to RC as he takes the championship and scampers off the Homestead premises via the grandstands it would be the most fitting way to punctuate his tenure at RCR. 207. He has a bright future ahead of him. "Anyway, does anyone really care the Bubba Wallace is black? All I see is a good driver getting his first win." Apparently some of the fans who attended the race do. With about 20 to go, some people in the stands were giving him the middle-finger salute. It was really classless and disgusting to see. Sometimes I think that casual NASCAR fans are some of the least classy people in society. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but it's true. 208. He pretty much cemented himself as Kyle Busch Motorsports' #1 driver with this win, which will only help him in his quest to win the Truck Series championship in 2014. Not too pleased with Ryan Blaney after he shoved Scott Riggs out of the way for 5th place in the closing laps, but if I were in Blaney's shoes, I probably would have done the same thing because he was faster than Riggs and Riggs was blocking him. All in all though, a great run for the #92 RBR Enterprises truck and driver Scott Riggs. I just wish that team could run the full schedule, especially since the 42-year old Riggs can still get it done in this series. Two-time K&N Pro Series East winner Ben Kennedy records his first Truck Series top ten finish, finishing in 4th place in his very first start at Martinsville Speedway. Yeah he's got the family connections and he was driving for Turner Scott Motorsports, but the 20-year old driver took a truck that ran outside the top-15 for much of the race and ended the race in 4th place at Martinsville of all places. Keep your eye on him in the upcoming seasons. John Hunter Nemechek finishes 16th in his Truck Series debut. Hopefully he'll become a regular in this series and keep the Nemechek name alive in NASCAR racing for nostalgic fans such as myself. As for the Kevin Harvick/Ty Dillon/RCR squabble, I am 100% in Harvick's corner on this one. Dillon just flat out dumped him in the center of the corner when there was no reason to accelerate. And for that, Harvick had every right to be upset with him. I think he took it a little too far by stopping next to the #3 team's pit box, but other than that I have no problem with his response to what happened on the track. And for those who have said that Harvick overreacted or took some cheap shots at Ty Dillon and/or RCR afterwards, I think you guys should look at it from Harvick's perspective. Here's a Cup driver for one of the biggest teams in the sport making an infrequent Truck Series start, and is doing so for a mid-pack Truck Series-only team in NTS Motorsports that's been struggling for most of the season with an aging veteran (Ron Hornaday) and a young driver with very little upside (Brennan Newberry). And while he's not very happy with his truck at the start of the race, his team manages to make proper adjustments to the truck that allows Harvick to race his way from outside the top-15 to the top five and stay there for most of the race. But then in the closing laps, all that hard work that he and his team have put into this truck to put it in a position to compete for a win against the likes of KBM, RCR, and ThorSport, is taken away from them by not just any driver, but the grandson of Harvick's soon-to-be former team owner, and a driver who Harvick feels has been a higher priority of RCR (along with his brother Austin) than their top Cup driver for the past 13 seasons (Harvick himself). When you add all that up, I think it's pretty easy to see why Harvick would be as frustrated as he was after the race. Here he is overachieving for a smaller team in a race that he doesn't have to be a part of, and a driver for whom he feels unjustifiably pushed aside by RCR management takes it all away from him. I probably wouldn't have taken it as far as Harvick did (especially with the pit road confrontation), but I would have been pissed off too if I were in Harvick's shoes, as I'm sure most of the rest of you guys would be as well. 210. Between the Dillons and Menard at RCR, they should cue the Silver Spoons theme song at driver intros whenever they come out. When I saw a headline of Wallace being the first black driver to win a national NASCAR race since Wendell Scott, I had really thought that Bill Lester had won a race in one of Bill Davis' trucks back in the mid '00s. Does anyone know of Wallace's plans next year? I'm hoping he can get in the #20 NNS car and show enough that he can get into Cup in the next couple of years. 212. murb posted: 10.26.2013 - 6:10 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) "When you add all that up, I think it's pretty easy to see why Harvick would be as frustrated as he was after the race." Not to mention that he's basically been the face of RCR for over a decade now, and if it wasn't for him, they might not even exist as a team right now (Childress has even said this before). And the other part that makes it a shit move on Ty's part is how Harvick mentored him right here at Martinsville in last year's race. Harvick climbed in the 3 truck and gave him pointers on how to drive the track on his first trip there and everything. Way to show respect to someone who has helped you out by running them over, and then acting like it's their fault afterwards. 213. Honestly, do you think more than 10% of the fans there knew Bubba Wallace, a black kid, was in that car? They probably just wanted the Truck with Dale's number 3 on it to win, so they'd have flipped off VA native Timothy Peters of he was leading in that situation. As for Harvick vs Dillon, the winner is neither and the loser is both. They both handled themselves like bush leaguers. The winner is Bubba. Harvick once again is in a fued, the story of his career, while Jimmie Johnson, who debuted after Harvick, is about to win championship #6. However, everyone mentions how Harvick doesn't much like Ty Dillon. If I remember right, Harvick doesn't care that much for Crafton either. Remember that Crafton once drove for Kevin Harvick in the Truck Series, and Harvick fired him, so there's likely no love lost between Harvick and Crafton, either. However, saying that, Crafton's got the championship in the bag (+51 points with three races left), barring some kind of post-race points penalty similar to what his teammate got early in the season, or someone like Harvick taking him out. If Harvick runs any more truck races his year, I'll be interested to see what happens between him and Crafton, though they've both been among those that have started races in RCR's #33 NNS car this year. And by the way, a good win for Darrell Wallace, Jr. His being able wrest the lead from Ty Dillon on that one late restart may also give hope to those starting second in the Cup race tomorrow. And for those that brought back my old comment about Wallace crashing too much early in the year, which he did. He's toned that down the last two or three months, and he's always had the speed, especially in that KBM truck, but now that he's won, I think you can expect more of the same. I do find it ironic that Kyle Busch, this time as a owner, has a win overshadowed by theatrics by other competitors, since he's been guilty of overshadowing the victories of others more than a few times himself with his own theatrics. 226. So the #22 Sponsor should be England's Stove Works. As for the ownership, the original announcement on Twitter from John Hunter said the attempt would be with the Nemechek's own team, and this was before Mauldin was involved. I see Mauldin as an investor type figure, especially since his company (SWM Int.) has sponsored NEMCO for the past few years. 236.
