He's been dedicated to this series for so many years, so I'm happy to see it finally pay off for him. As for Piquet reportedly driving the 9 full time next year, that would be a good move for him. I personally thought he should have stayed in Trucks this year instead of moving up. So maybe it will do him good confidence wise to move back into Trucks full time. 8. The Long Shot posted: 11.15.2013 - 6:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I love seeing Frank Kimmel getting a shot, but I can't help but feel he's getting shitty ThorSport R&D equipment." And yet he's only 1/100 of a second slower than Joey Coulter's fully funded Joe Gibbs-owned Truck. 9. Sooo... if you are a Kimmel fan, this won't be your favorite race. But nice name for BJ McLeod, I didn't even hear about him before, now apparently running his own truck for... wait for it... BJ Racing. Not kidding. 10. We need more Onion posted: 11.15.2013 - 6:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well, that incompetent crew chief appears to be Kimmel's usual ARCA crew chief. Matt Crafton is only 23 points ahead of Kyle Busch Motorsports' 51 truck in the owner's standings. Hopefully Kyle Busch doesn't get greedy & wreck Matt Crafton out of this one. All Matt Crafton needs to do is finish 18th or better to avoid losing a tiebreaker, that is if Kyle Busch leads the most laps and win. If Kyle doesn't win but finishes as a runner-up, but leads the most laps, Matt Crafton would be good to finish 22nd. This, of course, if Matt Crafton doesn't lead any laps himself, which in this case, he's a position safer if he does so depending on the scenario. I personally like it better if a championship is delivered to the owner and a driver of the same vehicle, so I am for Matt Crafton on defending this title as well. 12. 83andJoe posted: 11.15.2013 - 6:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ...when WAS the last time the past champion's provisional was used in the Truck Series? 13. Actually, I believe you're thinking of the year (2011) when Skinner failed to qualify because he was a post-entry, which rendered his past champion's provisional invalid. 17. Schroeder51 posted: 11.15.2013 - 8:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I've been wondering what happened to McCumbee, he's a driver that showed a lot of promise in this series a few years ago. Crafton is officially the series champion. Congrats to him. Some people might not like that he won the title by being overly consistent rather than continually threatening for wins, but I don't have a problem with that. He's been around for a long time and it's nice to see him finally claim the big prize in this series. 20. Sector posted: 11.15.2013 - 8:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Matt Crafton is the first driver to win the championship in the Camping World Truck Series with fewer than 10 top 5's. If Matt doesn't lead 25 laps tonight, he'll be the 2nd champion to lead no more than 100 laps all season. Travis Kvapil was the first, leading just only 49 laps in the 2003 season. 23. Schroeder51 posted: 11.15.2013 - 8:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm not fond of Kyle running Truck Series races, but it's not AS bad because the equipment he's driving is his own equipment, and it's more or less on par with the best equipment in this series rather than being vastly superior to virtually the entire field. If this were the case for him and Brad in the Nationwide Series, I don't think I would mind watching those races as much. 24. murb posted: 11.15.2013 - 8:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I know that on paper this may seem like a weak championship for Crafton, but it's not nearly as weak as Kvapil's was in 2003. In my opinion, Crafton has actually been the most deserving of it this year. Buescher has been hit or miss, Sauter has been too inconsistent, and Ty Dillon and the 3 team caught themselves up in too many mistakes and dustups this year (the Canada incident, the Harvick incident, having that stupid three week feud with Sauter in the middle of the Summer, and I'm sure there's a couple more). Crafton has been the most mentally solid, most consistent driver (if he finishes all the laps tonight he'll have finished EVERY LAP THIS SEASON), and he's also contended for a few wins even though he's only closed one of them out. So to me, he's no doubt the most deserving of this championship this year. 25. Sky Warrior posted: 11.15.2013 - 8:36 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) Problem is, we've watched Kyle try running his own stuff before in Nationwide. He couldn't win (even though his brother did), threw a hissy fit and got Daddy Gibbs to make all the other drivers stop beating up on him. He handed the team over to a talented driver and the equipment got worse, and now he's just going to shut it down because of "sponsorship issues", even though Monster would pay for him to run Nationwide thrice over 26. murb posted: 11.15.2013 - 8:45 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) I'm so happy this is the last time I have to hear Michael Waltrip's voice for at least a couple months. Sky Warrior posted: 11.15.2013 - 8:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Coulter seems like he's keeping up a trend of the last couple years. Every time a Gibbs driver goes to Childress, he gets better (Brian Scott). On the flip side, the drivers always get worse (Elliott Sadler, Coulter). 29. murb posted: 11.15.2013 - 8:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Every time a Gibbs driver goes to Childress, he gets better (Brian Scott). He apparently won't be back with KBM next year, so maybe he'll go back to RCR since they have a Truck opening (Childress has said that they plan on running at least one Truck next year). 30. I think he still has what it takes to win, as despite the fact the equipment he has been driving the past two years has been a step down from KHI, he's still delivered some great results. This season, I think Hornaday has been overcompensating the limitations of the equipment and overdriving the truck to the point that he pissed a few people off. Hopefully he gets a full season deal with Turner next year, because I definitely believe that will be a winning combination. * Solid runs by John Wes Townley, Cale Gale & Ryan Sieg. Townley did step up his driving skills this season, transitioning from the laughing stock of the sport to a serious contender in some races this season. Ryan Sieg continues to impress, earning multiple top 15 finishes this season driving an unsponsored truck for a team with far less resources than their weekly competitors. * Hope to see Chad McCumbee back in the trucks more often next season. * Overall, it was a great season for Matt Crafton, Ryan Blaney & Jeb Burton. Crafton finally won the Camping World Truck series championship after over a decade of Truck racing and proved to critics that he is more than an also-ran. Blaney and Burton both had outstanding rookie seasons, with each driver earning at least one victory this season. Both look promising as competitive drivers and spokesmen for the series and sport. * It was a disappointing season for Joey Coulter, Dakota Armstrong, and Eddie Sharp Racing as a whole: Joey Coulter's season can be summed up with one word: regression. Coulter scoured only 5 top tens in 2013 compared to 15 in 2012. Equipment certainly wasn't the problem, as Kyle Busch, Darrell Wallace Jr. and Erik Jones all won driving KBM trucks. Despite the lack of performance, Coulter will probably have the funds to race somewhere next season. Dakota Armstrong deserves credit for earning 0 DNFs this season. While it was a positive that Armstrong rarely received negative attention, the issue was he rarely received any attention at all. Turn One Motorsports returned to full-time competition with a whimper this season, with Armstrong scoring only 3 top 10's this season compared to 11 top 10's earned by Cole Whitt in Turn One's previous full season in 2011. It will be interesting to see where Armstrong goes in 2014. Eddie Sharp Racing was the strongest it ever was in 2012 after the purchase of equipment and other assets from KHI. It had two full time trucks: the #6 of Justin Lofton and the #33 of Cale Gale. Max Gresham joined the team to drive a third car, the #8, for a limited schedule. But as 2012 came to a close, the momentum ESR had built up throughout the season came to a rapid halt. Lofton announced he would be running a limited schedule in 2013, splitting his driving duties between NASCAR and Super Trucks. Cale Gale and Rheem did not return to ESR, resulting in Gale spending most of 2013 in the infield and the unsponsored #33 spending most of 2013 in the ESR shop. Max Gresham was the sole full time driver for ESR this season, earning 4 top 10's in 22 races, not up to par with either Lofton or Gale's 2012 results. 2013 was a step backwards for Eddie Sharp Racing. Sharp needs a talented driver with funding to bring back the competitive nature of the team in 2014. 178.
