Wow, this Custer kid is kind of coming out of nowhere. Apparently his
dad is Joe Custer (the general manager at SHR, I believe). Great run.
Youngest pole winner in Truck Series history. It blows my mind that we
now have drivers that were born in 1998 (the year I started watching
Nascar).

It's great to see Gateway back. And with all these young guys up at the
front, I think it's gonna be a really fun race.

Also, I'm really interested to finally observe Gray Gaulding thoroughly.
Everyone says he's a little turd, but I've only seen one race of him so
far (the Battle of the Beach at Daytona where pretty much everyone was
driving over their heads), so my jury is still out on him. He seems to
have a pretty good truck under him this weekend. Hopefully he doesn't do
anything stupid.

Well, get ready. Daddy bought him a ride and so far in K&N East and his
limited truck starts he's looked worse than John Wes Townley did his
first year.

I was born in '98, so I guess I'm a pretty big underachiever compared to
guys like Custer and Gaulding.

It's interesting you two mention Gray Gaulding. His hometown is about an
hour from where I live and I hear lots of compliments of him from other
locals...but I'm sure that's probably just more of a hometown/local
thing. I have no opinion on him yet because I haven't seen him race much
(even locally) but I guess we will see how he does tonight.

Likewise, I'm looking forward to tonight's race. This good field of
drivers and this racey racetrack should be fun! I already hope this race
isn't just a one time thing.

I am concerned for my favorite driver Jen Jo Cobb tonight. The fact that
she got outqualified by Norm Benning has me holding my breath that she
will make minimum speed tonight, at least...

I've been high on Custer for a while now. He gets good speed out of his
cars, but also isn't overly aggressive to the point where he'll cause
wrecks (see Gaulding, Gray). Since Custer has a developmental deal with
Stewart-Haas, as long as Gaulding doesn't kill him first (seriously,
I've never seen such a young pair have the on-track rivalry that they
do), he's in line for a very nice Cup career.

I know exactly what you mean; it makes me feel rather old already to see
drivers born several years after me, and now seeing drivers born years
after I first started watching NASCAR (I saw my first race in 1995 when
I was a little over three; it was the First Union 400 at North
Wilkesboro if I remember right because I remember they were talking
about Kyle Petty not feeling well and he dropped out of that race due to
fatigue). It's REALLY going to blow my mind when in a few more years we
start seeing drivers born after 9/11 begin to make their way into the
top 3 series...

I'm guessing you didn't see last fall's Phoenix K&N West race. Or the
battle at the beach at Daytona earlier this year. Or the Martinsville
truck race earlier this year.

From what I've seen of Gray Gaulding so far (which admittedly isn't
much), I get the feeling this kid might be next generation's Kyle Busch.
I don't mean that in a good way, either.

Then again, he is only 16, who knows how he might turn out with a few
years under his belt?

Yes i did, The K&N race at Phoenix admittedly was just a stupid move on
his part, but we all wish for the bump n run to come back and that is
basically what it was, no different than Big E flat out wrecking Terry
Labonte at Bristol at the finish. Last years battle at the beach was
just a 15 year old going for a win at Daytona, so he drove in to hard
and spun the leader, Steve Park spun the leader of the modified race the
same way and the great Kyle Larson hooked the leader on the final lap in
the late model race (the dirtiest move i have ever personally watched),
and i didn't see what Gray did wrong at Martinsvile this year.

Like I said, I'm not gonna judge Gaulding on the BOTB race just because
literally everyone in that race was out of control. I did see the
Phoenix incident last year, and that was some major bullshit. Still
though, I'm anxious to see what Gaulding will do in this race since he
seems to be one of the faster trucks.

Being completely honest here...I WOULD have lifted had I been in
Quiroga's position. I'd rather not win a race THAT way. But then again,
that's just me...

Yeah, that was a great race. Gateway put on a good show in its' return
to the Truck series. I do like this track; hope they can stick around!

Regardless of if he should have lifted or not, Quiroga should've just
turned low and gave Jones some room off of two. There was no reason to
come off of two on the 51's quarter panel.

For once, I actually agree with (gulp) Michael Waltrip. I don't think
Quiroga meant it intentionally, but it was definitely an accident that
could have been avoided.

Jesus, I would hope so! If he doesn't then what the hell would he be
doing for five years??? I think two years in Nationwide (2015-16) would
be enough for a rookie run in 2017.

I remember Dave #38 Fan saying that he expected Darrell Wallace to have
a more impressive stretch now that Kyle isn't running the 51 for a
number of races in a row, because for some reason the team trucks seem
to run worse and be more prone to mechanical failures when Kyle races,
and it appears that his theory is looking better by the minute :)

#51 got loose before the #77 got into him.

Loose or not, the 77 still drove through him. If you get loose and slide
UP the track, as Erik did, that leaves a whole lane open for the 77...
which he did not use, and instead drove through the 51. Either his
reaction time is garbage, or he had no interest in passing cleanly.

What a race they had last night! I'm proud of Quiroga...I mean...sure
you don't want to hit someone, but the way his truck was getting it off
of turn 2, I wouldn't have lifted for Erik Jones...Jones got loose and
was in the way. If Jones wouldn't have gotten loose, Quiroga would not
have had the opportunity to hit him. Overall...great action from a great
track!

German Quiroga's runner-up tied the mark held by Brendan Gaughan of the
best finish for the #77 in truck series history. Gaughan finished second
with the the number three times in 2006 and 2007, and Quiroga would
himself tie the mark a second time in a classic finish at Canadian Tire
later this same year.

Just rewatched this race. All I can say is that was amazing. Great
racing, wrecks, drama. I honestly can't find anything bad about this race

@102 Gateway has put on a good show every race since they reopened.
Definitely deserving of a Cup date.

I said rewatched. That's not true. This was my first time actually.
Since, becoming a regular follower of Trucks, in 2017, I never saw
Gateway, twice due to me being on vacation, and once, because I was at a
concert. So, this was more of a preview for myself to watch, before next
month's race there

@105 I wasn't disagreeing with him, rather correcting a mistake I made.
I do agree. 10 years ago, Gateway was seemingly being left behind. Now,
it's a top candidate for a Cup race. There's nothing quite like it. It
may be 1.25 Miles long, but it feels like a short track. It's a
standalone race for trucks. It gave us great moments throughout the
2000s, and came back and still gives us great moments now. The fans love
it. Heck, IndyCar almost sells that joint out. It's in a prime market
area, just outside of St. Louis. It's a midwest track fans actually
want. There's so many positives I can think of. I can see this being on
the Cup schedule by 2025

Rick Allen, Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip were the commentators. Ray
Dunlap and Hermie Sadler were the pit road reporters.
