He's looked pretty impressive over the past 2-3 years in some not great equipment in K&N East / ARCA and showed a lot of potential when he did get good equipment (leading the ARCA race at Kansas when he cut down a tire). I think Busch noticed him after he got a top ten in the truck race at Martinsville last fall in an unsponsored truck. I think it'll be a good fight for 3rd place between Tifft, Jones, and Reddick. 6. 23andJoe posted: 05.15.2015 - 8:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) >The "North Carolina Education Lottery 200" Are their schools that bad? Like most* lotteries, North Carolina's sends the proceeds to fund education. They're just explicit about it in their branding. * Well the Florida one, at least... The "7mph" times are probably where a group of trucks simply made a "shakedown" run and only crossed the timing lines on pit road while being pushed back after the session (740 seconds = ~12 minutes). Note that Boston (30.210/178.749), Tanner (30.674/176.045) and Jennings (30.770/175.496) are listed with times on the official NASCAR score sheet. 7. epzik8 posted: 05.15.2015 - 8:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I bet Kahne will dominate because of course. 8. I'm guessing it was probably one of those stand-alone Xfinity events back when Cup drivers could run for points and win titles in those series... 11. murb posted: 05.15.2015 - 8:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "When was the last NASCAR race where BOTH drivers who qualified on the front row had to go to the back at the start?" I don't know, but I remember one time at Dover (I think it was the June 2002 race), 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th all went to the back, so 9th place (I think it was Ricky Rudd?) ended up starting on the pole. 12. Schroeder51 posted: 05.15.2015 - 8:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^Actually it was 1st (Kenseth), 3rd (Jerry Nadeau), and 5th (Kurt Busch) who went to the back of the field (Kenseth due to an engine change, and Nadeau and Busch due to practice crashes), so the 7th place car started first. You were right, it was Ricky Rudd who moved up to the pole position in that race. I'm pretty sure that's gotta be the record for furthest back a driver has moved forward to start a race from the first position... 13. murb posted: 05.15.2015 - 8:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah, haha, I just looked it up. Watching live it was clear to me that Kahne was ahead, if it really was 0.001 seconds I don't think the difference would have been obvious to the naked eye. As far as the whole "emotions" argument, I think people have to take into account that it's not passion that people dislike, it's specifically what's being said. Erik Jones got straight up beat in a head to head battle when he had the preferred groove to hold on for the win and didn't want to blame himself so he blamed lapped cars for ruining the race... meanwhile the guy he referred to as a lapped car was a lead lap driver. People like the type of genuine that they most appreciate in a person. Deflecting blame isn't a trait that most people like. I hope that makes sense, because everywhere you look people are making the "vanilla drivers" argument as if it's some black and white scenario. 85. You call Jimmie Johnson nap time because he doesn't do stuff like this. Erik Jones shows emotion about losing a race and you call him the next Kyle Busch. These guys race to win. What do you want? He has seemed so even-keeled ever since he's shown up, so it caught me off guard. But I TOTALLY get the frustration though. Counting the Cup race last week, this is his third straight race where he has not finished where he should have due to dumb luck circumstances. So I have no problems with him showing emotion afterwards like that. But again, like I said, I just can't help but hope that it's not a sign of things to come. He is inevitably going to be around for a LONG time in this sport and win a TON of races (I've seriously never seen a kid come out and be this good right off the bat), so I hope he doesn't start to get a big head and becomes one of those guys who never owns up to any of his own mistakes. I've seen way too many guys in recent years turn into that (Hamlin and Keselowski for two - Logano was headed down that path too but over the last couple years I think he's learned to not complain as much), so I don't think it's an inconceivable concern to have with a young driver. I'm not picking on Erik. I'd feel the same way if it was Blaney, Bubba, Chase, Larson, or any of these other young dudes who are still finding their place in the sport. But again, hopefully that won't happen, and hopefully this was nothing more than just a young kid still learning how to take hard losses. And considering how mellow Erik has seemed through his entire Nascar tenure so far, I'm pretty confident that's all it was. 95. Schroeder51 posted: 05.16.2015 - 4:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Pretty much what murb said is how I feel. I don't have a problem with drivers displaying their emotions every now and then, but it's not something you want to see EVERY single week over every little thing. I totally get Erik being frustrated. Wouldn't you be pretty displeased as well if you'd come so close to winning two races in a row only to just come up short at the very end? I'm pretty sure close to everyone would. But seeing him stomp off like that does concern me. I like the kid and as I've said before, I'm convinced this kid is going to be a future Cup champion at some point in the near future. But time and time again I've seen likable young drivers achieve success in the upper ranks of NASCAR, and their newfound success just causes them to...change. They become a different driver than they were before. They're okay with racing people hard, but heaven forbid OTHER drivers have the audacity to race them hard. I don't want to see the kid go down that road because we've already got enough drivers who have gone down that road and I'd really hate to see another one follow that path. As murb said, though, Jones has seemed to be a fairly mellow and mature guy since he first appeared on the scene, so hopefully this won't become a recurring thing for him. Of course, you are welcome to still see me as a hypocrite if you wish to... 96. It's a damn shame that they took away a well-deserved win from the young man because he was too far ahead with 1 to go. At least they got the photo-finish they wanted. Also, they need to get rid of double-file restarts. Save the gimmicks for the all-star race. They're sacrificing tarttreal racing for the sake of entertainment. Allowing the second-place car to restart in a dead-heat with the leader is a joke. All the leader has to do is spin his tires on the restart and the second place can grab the lead without having to do anything. Maybe I'm just old-school, but I think you should have to work your way around the car in front of you. Part of the excitement of racing is watching a driver set up and execute a pass. Allowing 90% of the pass to be completed at 50 mph under caution just takes something away in my opinion. Between the gimmicks and fake cautions, NASCAR has been hard for me to watch over the last decade or so. And looking at the grandstands on race day, I can see I'm not alone. 97. If I'm an owner, I want the guy driving my race cars upset that he didn't win. I want Kyle Busch or Erik Jones or whover in my car. If they care that much about winning, they are going to do everything in their power to put that car in victory lane. Also, that immature stuff is the same stuff Earnhardt did when he got rubbed the wrong way. But he's a untouchable in some of your minds." I hear you. I race on a really local level (not big time at all) and I'm very hard on myself if I cost myself or fall short. I shake the hand of whoever beats me and move on, but I'm usually frustrated. I think at a professional level of motorsports, they all have a serious drive to win, just that people handle it differently so that they won't regret what they say when the adrenaline cools off. I'd want Kyle or Erik in my car cause they're incredibly talented to start. There's no doubt about that. And I feel kinda crappy for saying this, as you made it clear that you're not singling anyone out and more-so talking about trends you see, but I wasn't an Earnhardt fan, for what it's worth. Earnhardt did have fans who wouldn't like similar drivers if their image didn't match Earnhardt's (something I kind of laugh about from time to time), and they're definitely being hypocritical when it comes to style, but I think the more diehard fans tend to be more logical, which is good. I usually enjoy when Harvick fans hate on Kyle and vice versa, because I see some serious similarities between the two. 99. Kahne, who made it 5 for 6 in Trucks, was in a distant 2nd to Jones but a caution flew with a few to go and the two had an epic GWC duel. The 18 year old Jones cried in the Fox interview after the race. It marked the second straight race he'd dominated only to lose at the very end (though he won the 2015 truck title, he should've had many more wins). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
