With the track still being grippy and the trucks being able to run flat out most of the way around, this should be a decent race. I could see Townley, Hemric, or Reddick winning this and putting themselves in the chase. Side note...I don't know what the Contreras Team is up to or thinking this weekend. Enrique Contreras ran over 50 laps of practice and yet his qualifying time today is the fastest he has been. You would think that after running 4 or 5 laps at that pace the team would think "We have a problem...lets look at the truck some more." or "Something's hurt, we got to save the parts." or something. I'm guessing this speed is all they have? (Although in qualifying, Enrique was really lifting off the throttle in the corners a lot.) So either that #71 truck is just way down on horsepower, or the truck has been completely evil to drive? The best practice time this weekend was a 38.543 . So if you take 15% off that, roughly today's minimum speed will be around a 44.325 3. dennyfan11 posted: 08.27.2016 - 11:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Right now, a large rain cell is 35 miles away. 4. dennyfan11 posted: 08.27.2016 - 12:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Storms will be strong, with lightning and gusty winds, along with heavy rain. 5. dennyfan11 posted: 08.27.2016 - 12:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Rain very close to the track. 6. Today was easily the most competitive Tommy Joe Martins and Jennifer Jo Cobb has been all year.) 3.) The on track action today was just wonderful! It felt like 10-12 trucks had a good chance of winning. My last thought/comment is that wouldn't the win for the #11 truck today put them in the owner's chase? I thought I heard somewhere a while back that the owners have their own chase as well? If so, Moffitt would have just put the Red Horse #11 in it? 50. Sean posted: 08.27.2016 - 7:05 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) "Christopher Bell is almost on the Kyle Larson-Martin Truex luck level." I wouldn't say he has had particularly bad luck. He has crashed by himself an awful lot including today, but it's obviously rookie growing pains and trying to adapt to a different driving style, as many USAC drivers had to do (even Jeff Gordon) since you drive sprint cars more aggressively than you drive stock cars. "Sean, are you from the future?" Hahaha, no. I just have noticed that in the past couple years, success in K&N East (or even participation there - Chase Elliott drove in K&N East without a great deal of success) has been one of the leading predictors for which rising drivers would go on to the fastest success in the top three series. Kyle Larson won the 2012 K&N East title, William Byron won it last year, Elliott, Darrell Wallace, Jr., Daniel Suarez, Cole Custer, Ben Kennedy, etc... all had K&N experience. I realize Dylan Kwasniewski and Max Gresham failed, but all the drivers I just listed there have definitely had some success in the top three divisions. The deepest season for K&N East was probably 2012, when Kyle Larson, Corey LaJoie, Brett Moffitt, Chase Elliott, Darrell Wallace, Jr., and Ben Kennedy were all full-time, with Daniel Suarez, Travis Pastrana, Cale Conley, and Ryan Blaney also making 5 or more starts. That year was probably even deeper than some Xfinity seasons were when you exclude the Cup drivers, and Moffitt was the most dominant driver in the series. Moffitt was in position to win the championship entering the final lap of the season until he got punted on the last lap by Tyler Reddick, which handed the title to Larson. That was one of the reasons I was lower on Larson than other people. He only won the K&N East title because Moffitt got punted, he didn't win in trucks until he got to Nationwide, he didn't win in Nationwide until he got to Cup, and he hasn't won in Cup, which most people (including me, a relative Larson detractor, though I do like him) expected him to do by now. Chase Elliott was also active full-time that season and he wasn't close to Moffitt in speed. I figured that since Moffitt was as fast or faster than Larson or Elliott, who are considered the great hopes right now, that he would surprise some people, especially considering Elliott only spent 2 seasons in K&N East and Larson spent only 1, while Moffitt had 5 straight seasons there (no titles, and he got his butt kicked by Kwasniewski in 2013 which is kind of embarrassing, but five straight top threes in the championship, meaning he had even MORE experience than Larson and Elliott did.) I realize Red Horse is at best the #3 team after KBM and ThorSport, but KBM has some very flawed drivers (Christopher Bell is probably just as fast as Byron but EXTREMELY crash-prone, and the non-Crafton ThorSport drivers are pretty mediocre) so I saw Moffitt as having a great opportunity to sneak in there when both Byron and Crafton lost. I did not expect it to be this race, but I'm not surprised. People have been overlooking Moffitt for years, when he was faster AND more experienced than Elliott and Larson when they came up together... 54. Sean posted: 08.27.2016 - 7:12 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Moffitt was even kind of overlooked all last season. He DID win ROTY but most people seemed to think of him as just another bad one-and-done ROTY in the same vein as Conway, Lally, and Leicht, but I never saw him that way at all. Most people preferred to hype up Matt DiBenedetto for overachieving in bad equipment more, but he had Nationwide experience while Moffitt had basically none. I thought it was ridiculous Moffitt got hired straight up from K&N East to Cup with nobody giving him a Nationwide/truck ride first, but I was happy to see he was not forgotten. Even so, I don't think he did as badly as people want to say he did in Cup because MWR was a lame-duck team and he had no Nationwide or truck experience. The thing is, DiBenedetto also competed in K&N East and was nowhere near as good as Moffitt, so I think people were hyping DiBenedetto too much just for not crashing in a bad car, which also basically applied to Moffitt (he crashed in a slightly better car, but still for a lame duck team, not a great situation.) Now that DiBenedetto has started crashing, it makes me wonder why he is in Cup and Moffitt, who beat him for ROTY, is still outside, but I think Moffitt is doing the right thing now to work up slowly now that his Cup experience gave him an opportunity rather than rushing into a lousy Cup ride and becoming a bust... 55. What a pass by Moffitt. 3rd, 2nd and 1st in his last 3 races. Been watching him for a while, hoping he'd get a full time ride in Xfinity or Trucks and I think (and hope) today raised a lot of eyebrows. With Penske opening a second team and SHR opening a team in Xfinity next year, I hope they can put this kid in one of the cars but doubt it. He definitely deserves a spot somewhere in Xfinity or Trucks next year; there are so many talented drivers out there without full time rides. The JGR NXS #20 will be open next year with Jones moving to Cup, plus the aforementioned Penske/SHR rides and maybe we'll be surprised and see Kyle Busch bring back an NXS team next year. But this kid deserves a full time ride somewhere in NXS or CWTS, he deserves it... 58. Ty posted: 08.27.2016 - 8:28 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) It's also interesting to me how many solid and great drivers (some vets too) are out there without full-time rides or currently hold rides that are "beneath them"... Guys like Sam Hornish Jr., Brett Moffitt, John Hunter Nemechek, Ben Kennedy, Ryan Truex, Parker Kligerman, James Buescher, Austin Theriault, Justin Marks, Alex Bowman, Corey LaJoie, Kevin Swindell, Drew Herring, Alex Bowman, Jeb Burton, Dylan Lupton, Josh Berry, Ryan Sieg, Dakoda Armstrong, Matt DiBenedetto, Spencer Gallagher, Cale Conley, Ross Chastain, Joey Coulter, Harrison Rhodes and my favorite, Johanna Long... Hell, you can even make an argument for German Quiroga or Dylan Kwasniewski or even Nelson Piquet Jr., or Brennan Newberry (he did show some promise, at least to me). And then you got younger drivers like Todd Gilliland (future star IMO), Kate Dallenbach, Chris Eggleston, Brandon McReynolds, Chase Briscoe and Ross Kenseth who haven't had many/any starts in NXS/CWTS, as well. It is absolutely mind-boggling to me how there are so many extremely talented guys and girls out there without rides or driving mediocre equipment. I've read a lot of people in the past say that NASCAR's future isn't that bright because of the lack of talented up-and-comers, but truth is, there's a lot of great drivers out there that deserve rides. The Xfinity Series and CWTS should be plum full with talented drivers in solid equipment, but alas, it's not.. I wish it was though. If I had my way, the NXS/CWTS would have all these guys in the series and driving solid equipment (with no Cup guys). The future of NASCAR, driver-wise, is bright. We might not have another Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart, but we have some really really talented guys and girls out there either without full-time rides or rising through the ranks and I'm excited to watch and see.. 59. As for the Gibbs ride? I'd love that. But it'll probably be Austin Cindric, who's looked terrible in his three Truck races so far. "but I think if Matt Tifft is healthy enough it might be him." I'll be really surprised if he's not at Gibbs still. I think he'll either replace Jones in the #20 NXS car or take Byron's Truck spot full time. Before his brain tumor they had a ton of races planned for him between NXS/Trucks, so I think they're really high on him. "John Hunter Nemechek" I bet he goes to RCR now. They were interested in him earlier in the year apparently, and though I thought he would be a shoe-in for Hendrick, they just got William Byron and now have Alex Bowman working as their in shop simulation/test driver (which tells me they have plans for him), so I don't see that happening anymore (not that it was anything more than just a weird semi-fantasy on my part). RCR getting JHN now as Ty's replacement next year (or Brendan - is he still retiring or was he just screwing with the media at Vegas?) seems pretty realistic to me (that, or maybe Trucks again for NEMCO but with RCR equipment or something). "James Buescher" I mean, yeah it'd be great to see him back in a good full time ride, but he hasn't raced in almost two years and is already in the real estate business. I'll be shocked if we ever see him again. 62. In Trucks, I am not sure if RHR would go back to three full-time trucks after that failed John King experiment back in 2012 (I know he won at Daytona, but he also had 4 DNFs according to the database that same season). If they are willing to go back to three full-time teams, I think that the formation of Peters, Moffitt, and Tifft (if he does come back after recuperating from brain surgery and does well) would be dark horse potential for Chase drivers in the 2017 Trucks season. 63. My only thought is, does the loop data only take green flag laps into account for things like "high position"? The lap Reed Sorenson led was under caution, but perhaps the highest he placed under green was 9th. 81.
