He appears to be one of the next superstar prospects in the Toyota Pipeline, but his results in top-of-the-line trucks this year has been extremely underwhelming to say the least. For that matter, it would be underwhelming even if he was driving the WORST equipment on the track. 10. I'm really glad Gilliland made the playoffs, especially after he lost that race at Gateway because he was taken out by Creed. Lessard in the 4 has improved as 2020 has gone on, Smith is still getting his feet wet in the 51. You expected the 51 to make the playoffs without a full time driver, perhaps? I don't know if the 51 gets the same Cup-level pit crew and A-1 equipment when Chandler Smith is driving as it does when the team owner is driving, but even if not it's still the best stuff out there or very close and so is the 4. Let's give the 2 teenagers a little more of a chance before concluding that they can't make it or that the "team" is no good. The team is outstanding, their equipment is among the best; the drivers will improve eventually. Or they'll be replaced by whoever is next in line. 72. Foote posted: 09.11.2020 - 1:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 71 Erik Jones and Will Byron didn't need "more of a chance" to make it as teenagers at KBM. CFM posted: 09.11.2020 - 1:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Only Kyle Busch, Joe Gibbs & Toyota have to "pick one", and they aren't quite that ignorant or shortsighted. The 51 is an elite team, to say the least, when a more experienced driver is at the helm, so it's not the equipment holding anyone back. Does that mean Chandler Smith is a bum and Toyota should dump him immediately? I guess it does mean that, because "pick one". The best thing that could happen for the other manufacturers is that Toyota gets too cocky and arrogant about their never-ending assembly line of young talent and begins dumping good drivers all over the place because of impatience and because there's ALWAYS a better one coming right along. William Byron is Exhibit A, there was no room for him because they thought he wasn't as good as Erik Jones or See Bell. Now Erik Jones is about to become Exhibit B. When they decide that Ty Gibbs is better than Bell... 74. Mile501 posted: 09.11.2020 - 1:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If you take a look at Todd Gilliland's actual numbers, his 2019 season with KBM was similar, and perhaps even better, than his 2020 season has been. He missed the playoffs last year because there were 4 winners who were lower than him in points. He actually ranked 7th in points at this time last year. This year, NASCAR expanded the truck playoff field to 10, and he just barely made it in. In addition, his average finish this year is 4 positions lower than it was last year. 75. David posted: 09.11.2020 - 1:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The fact that Todd Gilliland has been able to avoid a huge drop-off in 2020 speaks well of him, considering the humongous difference between KBM equipment and a brand new FRM team with a bunch of guys (crew, engineers, etc.) who are still learning how to work together in the truck series. 76. I think FRM is an equipment downgrade from KBM. Additionally, the field is more competitive this year than it was last year. Todd has more top 5s, the same number of top 10s, more laps led, a better average running position and a higher driver rating despite all that. He's just had more bad luck this year than last (finished 1.4 spots worse than he ran per race in 2019, but 4.5 spots worse per race in 2020.) Some of it's been self-inflicted, but the majority of his bad luck hasn't been his fault (see: electrical problems at the Daytona Road Course, getting spun out of the lead in a dominant truck at Gateway, etc.) 78. I believe that Kyle treats it equally like the 18 and 4. That's evident by the fact that Rudy Fugle was the crew chief for it instead of one of the full time drivers. KBM has a whole has taken a step back in performance. You had a time where a drivers would jump in run up front and win a bunch of races. This includes Bubba Wallace, William Byron, Christopher Bell and Erik Jones. Since then KBM, drivers haven't done as well, and I'm wondering if the pressure to win is too much there. The new guys come in and see what previous drivers have done and they feel expected to do the same with very little time to learn and grow. 82. KBM's full-time drivers don't have the speed they once did and that is due to something so pick one. 84. Z posted: 09.11.2020 - 6:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) KBM's decline correlates w/ the spec engine. They're forced to give up a massive advantage, & everybody else caught up. That & what seems to be lesser potential and/or less experienced prospects adds to the current situation. Just as an example, Lessard's making the jump straight from CARS w/ only x5 ARCA starts & x1 East. He likely should've spent at least this year in ARCA. AFA Eckes, he just seems to be learning how to finish races. He's got great speed but needs to develop consistency. Not every 18yo just steps in & competes for a title like a Byron. Every driver develops at a different rate, handles pressure different, etc. - especially driving for an Owner in Kyle Busch on a struggling team. 2019 doesn't get this pass, but I'm more lenient towards this year b/c of nearly no practice whatsoever - though it's fair to note that applies to the field as well. Last Note: This year's also seen more competitive entries than last year w/ x3 new Gallagher Trucks, the McInally Truck, & the Front Row Truck. That's x5 more Trucks fighting regularly for the same spots as the KBM stable. (Though Gilliland DID downsize, whether his equipment was good or not only Ankrum really did anything of note in it - each of the above teams have already notched comparable results) Of that quintet Kraus or Gilliland (that order) would have to be the most impressive, IMO. 85. The first 11 races of the season were all superspeedways of 1.5 miles or larger. Then came the lone road course race, followed by 3 races at tracks between 1 and <1.5 miles. The last 8 races consist of more of a mixture: 3 short tracks, Phoenix, 3 1.5-milers, and Talladega. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
