Creed prevailed in becoming champion in the 2018 ARCA season. Will Zane Smith redeem himself and conquer a championship for himself? He is the only one among the Final Four contenders who hasn't had a championship in ARCA or Trucks. The other championship contenders in Grant Enfinger also has an ARCA championship and Brett Moffitt won the Truck championship in the same year Creed won his ARCA in 2018. As far as scoring the most points of the season, Brett Moffitt enters this race 4 points ahead of Austin Hill. It's somewhat deja vu of 2019, in which Moffitt ended up scoring the most points while another driver (Grant Enfinger at the time) was points leader all season. It isn't as noticeable since the Playoffs doesn't showcase the non-championship standings. 2. JSPorts posted: 11.03.2020 - 11:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's especially strange since Niece has entered the #44 in every race this year. You'd think they'd want to finish out the full season, because teams often have to fall back on owner points at the start of a new season. It's even weirder that Niece has entered the #42, since that's a part-time truck (only 8 starts this year.) Maybe Niece is switching the #44 owner points to the #42 because they plan to run that truck full-time in 2021 instead? 6. NewJack posted: 11.03.2020 - 2:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's an expensive trip with potentially little to gain. Especially for Norm, who hasn't run all the races anyway. That's the one flaw about running the last race on the opposite end of the race shops, the lesser teams won't make the trip. Though I don't believe NASCAR cares about this. 7. Mile501 posted: 11.03.2020 - 4:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Among the final four, Creed seems to be the most deserving of this year's championship. Enfinger has nearly identical stats (in terms of wins, top 5s, and top 10s), but has led only 1/4 of the laps that Creed has led. Moffitt has the most top 5s and top 10s, but just one win. But, since it doesn't really matter who is deserving, and it all comes down to one race...let's look at each driver's past truck series results at Phoenix: Creed has finished 10th and 12th in his 2 Phoenix races. He led 16 laps last year, but that was due to pit strategy. Enfinger crashed in his first race at Phoenix, but finished 4th and 5th in his last 2 races there. Moffitt won at Phoenix in 2018, but finished 10th last year. Smith has not raced at Phoenix in trucks, but has a pair of 5th place finishes in other series (Xfinity, fall 2019 and ARCA, spring 2020). I don't see a clear favorite among this group. It should be interesting to see who comes out on top! 8. TheDewCrew posted: 11.03.2020 - 6:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Moffitt broke both of his legs in an ATV accident, the day the Truck Series was set to race at Atlanta. However, COVID-19 saved him from missing any time, and inadvertently saved his season. If he wins the championship, he could actually thank COVID. Ironic 9. TeamDCRfan posted: 11.03.2020 - 10:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race will be interesting for Brock Beards last place finish title he does. Norm currently is the leader, however, Sauter and Gray could end up with the title should either of them finish last. JJC could also claim the title. While she only has 1 LPF, she would get the tie breaker based on more bottom 10 finishes than Norm sauter and gray. Barnhill is also technically eligible, but since he got canned by Reaume Bros, hes not a threat. 10. JSPorts posted: 11.03.2020 - 11:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The playoff system makes things really interesting in that championship. Kind of funny that there are 2 drivers who usually run near the back (Benning, Cobb) & 2 that run top 15 most weeks (Sauter, Gray). 11. Winston West had the same rules as Cup, so there were plenty of west coast cars to fill out the field. And many of the Cup teams would sell their cars after the race, rather than hauling them back east, so the expense of the trip was pretty minimal. Now, of course, a NASCAR truck or car is useless for anything else, so that's not an option. (going even further back, the season used to both start and end at Riverside - back then teams would run the season ending race and leave their cars on the west coast, come back & run the next year's opener, sell the car and start racing with the new year's car back on the east coast). 19. It looks likely that, seemingly aside from Moffitt, the entire top 15 in the standings will return. Many aren't confirmed, but are expected to be soon. Many of the non-playoff trucks showed a lot of promise late in the season as well. -Friesen's team really improved towards the end of the season as the team got used to the manufacture change. They should be better in 2021. -Johnny Sauter was basically on a year+ long slump, but finally showed some speed the last few races, giving us signs that the 13 team will be improved next year. -Tanner Gray and Lessard are both unknowns heading into next year that have shown good speed at times, but significantly lack experience compared to the rest of the field. One would expect improvements out of them next year with a year under their belts. -Derek Kraus showed that he can be a playoff contender with more consistent trucks. Hopefully his team takes a step forward, and if so he will be a contender next year for a playoff spot as well. In addition to those teams, add in a likely full time effort for Chandler Smith, the addition of Hailie Deegan and Hocevar, and likely a part time effort for Sam Mayer and/or Ty Gibbs, and next season is truly shaping up to be even better than this year! 75. But NASCAR needs to face the reality that a spin by a part-time driver who ranks 32nd in points essentially decided this championship. How can anyone think this is a good system? If points were tight enough the same thing could have happened. I say we put in a no caution policy for the last 20 laps of the race and anyone who wrecks in that time gets an extreme fine. That way a backmarker team cant change the points. Seems pretty fair to me. In all seriousness why is there such a blame on the late race caution for a bad playoff system. Late race cautions happen. And Sheldon Creed who was VERY deserving of a championship got the championship! At this point its just complaining to be complaining. Positives: 1. Eldora is gone. I know I'm probably the only one who feels this way, but 2018's race was lousy and 2019's was one of the worst races I've ever watched. 2. They didn't drop Richmond, Martinsville, Daytona, Bristol or Charlotte Neutral: 1. Watkins Glen, Nashville, CotA. I hope racing turns out well, but I can't say it WILL. We've got different trucks now than what they used to run at the Glen & Nashville 2. Pocono & Talladega. I feel like the wild card of having Talladega 2 races before the championship could be exciting but it could also be terrible if we have a Kevin Harvick-like regular season champion wrecking and HAVING to win Martinsville to save the season. The racing at Pocono has been good in trucks, but, like Canada in 2019, we're due for a snoozer. 3. Dropped tracks: Dover, Iowa, Michigan, Chicago. I've never been nuch of a fan of Michigan, Iowa & Chicago can be hit or miss for me, as well as Dover, though Dover usually produces some excitement Negatives: 1. Darlington. I didn't watch the xfinity race at Darlington that Brandon Jones won, but I feel all the other races at Darlington this year were terrible, including the truck race 2. Gateway being the 1st race of the playoffs. This year's Gateway race was a bummer for me, just didn't have anything to keep me drawn in (except maybe when Gilliland & Eckes were up front), so to be in the playoffs isn't my ideal situation. 3. Bristol on dirt. I know a lot of people love dirt races, but to me it's a bit gimmicky for nascar. Should keep it for an all star or exhibition. To me it's largely because of the system. Win and you're in. Somebody can luck their way into the playoffs despite being 16th in points thanks to Daytona or a dirt track (which goes for Knoxville too) 4. Only 22 races instead of 23. Always a bummer to see a drop in events. 5. Two Vegas races. Still got plenty of 1.5 milers (Kansas, Homestead, Darlington, Charlotte, Texas as well) when there's only 1 Richmond, 1 Martinsville and 1 (asphalt) Bristol. Any word on Rockingham? All in all, I would say (again, my own opinion which is probably not popular opinion) too many negatives, some steps in the wrong direction. I know it's not as simple as "we want these tracks in the schedule, so we'll add them" but there are tracks I'd like to see. Auto Club, Rockingham, maybe Sonoma if the Glen or CotA doesn't work out, another Martinsville, maybe Loudon or IRP 125. The 2019 race may have been lousy but the appeal of watching trucks on dirt made up for it, before that it was always one of the best on the schedule. I'm so glad that they dropped Dover and Michigan, granted the Dover race this year wasn't bad, both tracks either produce boring races or complete wreckfests (2020 Michigan). I hate to see Iowa and Chicago leave, though; Chicago was hit or miss but Iowa usually made for some good racing. Darlington earlier this year was pretty good (Trucks, Xfinity, 2/3 Cup Races) in typical Darlington fashion, so the addition of it is a win in my book. I definitely agree with the two Vegas races since they tend to be snoozers (except 2018). I wish the season was longer for trucks, maybe around 26 races instead of only 22, since the series is usually the best of the 3. In the future, I'd like to see trucks return to their short track roots. They could go to feasible tracks like IRP, South Boston or Nashville Fairgrounds. A Rockingham return would be great, and it's more realistic now that the CARS Tour is returning. DEFINITELY agree about Martinsville, that track deserves 2 dates after the Truck race this year, plus Xfinity and Cup are already scheduled to run the track twice, so why were the trucks relegated to only 1 date? It doesn't add up. I'm also hyped for the Knoxville race considering how good the trucks usually were on Eldora. 128. Mile501 posted: 11.20.2020 - 10:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Some additional thoughts on the 2021 schedule: It is an oddly constructed schedule, particularly during the summer. Many of the races are concentrated in Feb-March, May-June, and Sept, with a summer stretch that features just 2 races in a 7-week period. This results in the next-to-last regular season race being really early (July 9), yet the playoffs don't begin until August 20, a full 6 weeks later. Having oddly timed off weeks isn't exactly new with the truck series, but it seems more noticeable than usual with this schedule. Some of that is due to the Olympics, so perhaps 2022 will be better in that regard. For now, I'm just glad to see a greater variety of track types. There are just 3 races that will be separate from Cup (Knoxville, Gateway, Mosport). This is more than Xfinity, which has just 1 such race (Mid-Ohio). While I think many of us long for the days when the top 3 series had more stand-alone events, I just don't think it is financially realistic in present-day NASCAR. 139. The first two on the outside would be Ciccarelli's 83 and the 97, which is another team that has yet to say anything. 147.
