Off the top of my head I think only he & Hornaday have 30+ in trucks, and Ron doesn't have any Cup wins and few Xfinity wins. So it's kind of like some years ago when an NFL commentator said "Peyton Manning becomes the 2nd player to throw for 500 touchdowns"...well, he was also the 2nd to throw for 421-499 @17 if he races in the rest of the races, I'm sure he'd get a waiver. I think it would be the worst waiver they've ever given out because it wasn't due to injury, illness or age (not that I like the age waiver either), he just straight up missed a race because he didn't have a ride. At least Ankrum start & parked 19. Mile501 posted: 03.03.2021 - 11:22 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 - I know this may sound like a crazy idea, but what if we had a championship format that lasted all season long, so that playoff waivers wouldn't even enter into the discussion? I know, that's not our new reality. But seriously, all NASCAR needs to do is stick to the top-30 (top-20 in trucks I believe) rule for eligibility and let the rest take care of itself. If you miss a few truck races but you win and score enough points to still rank among the top 20, then you're in. That's simple and as fair as it can be, I think. 20. Mannoroth posted: 03.03.2021 - 11:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18. Yep, you're right and I even think it's true for 20 in each series. Simply incredible how far you can get, when you regularly race in lower series year by year and you still have a really solid Cup career, while others didn't race in lower series that much or at all and they still have a worse Cup career (like in Rusty Wallace's or Bill Elliott's case). 22. Anonymous posted: 03.03.2021 - 12:20 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @21 How are Wallace's and Elliott's careers worse than Kyle's when their championships were legitimate and his aren't? 23. He won that title via playoffs format as well as via old school point system, while scoring 27 top 10s. Plus, he even won the regular season championship after 26th race. 24. RaceFanX posted: 03.03.2021 - 1:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 The rules about running every race are only there to prevent drivers from deliberately skipping races with a points systems that otherwise would inadvertently allow it. NASCAR hands out those waivers for cases where that is not the case pretty liberally and that's likely intentional, with better knowledge of concussions having a guy sit out for a race to heal is much more favored these days. Missing one due to a lack of a ride is understandable and on par with occassions from NASCAR's past; under the old points system Jeff Green was even a legitimate contender for the Busch title in 1999 despite failing to qualify for a race early in the season. 25. Fair and simple sure but it doesn't serve NASCAR's purpose. They don't want drivers skipping races so they can run the Indy 500, the Bathurst 1000, or whatever. NASCAR wants Chase Elliott running the Coke 600, not the Indy 500. Fans come out or tune in to see their favorite drivers and NASCAR wants them to be there unless they absolutely can't be for some reason. That's where the waivers come in. 26. Mile501 posted: 03.03.2021 - 2:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I don't foresee drivers just skipping races even if the system allowed for it, due to sponsor commitments and just their natural desire to race. Corey posted: 03.03.2021 - 2:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @25 Team contracts already take care of that problem. Chase Elliott is contracted to drive for Hendricks. He can't just skip a race to run something else. It has to fall on an off weekend or be logistical possible to run both, like the Indy/Charlotte double. Even then he needs Rick's permission to run said event. 28. ThatGuy posted: 03.03.2021 - 3:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @19 I don't know. I'd never believe such a thing @21 again off the top of my head, I'm not good with the Xfinity wins list, and trucks for 20+ I believe is just Skinner, Sprague, Sauter & Bodine and none of them won in Cup @22 because Bill & Rusty (who had great careers, nobody said they didn't) have less wins and less championships. I hate the format, but as some say, everybody's playing by the same rules. And absolutely take away Kyle's 2015 title...buuut, was he not the best (when he raced) that year? But if you take away 2015, you can't take away 2019 (where I believe he only wouldn't have won using the 2004-2013 formats, which some don't give credit for anyway), and if you take away his 15 for not being legitimate, take 2014 away from Harvick & strap it on Jeff Gordon, give 2015 & 16 to Harvick, and take 2018 off Logano and give it to Kyle Busch. So his 2 championships are as legitimate as anyone's. I personally wish we stuck with the format used up to 2003 with the point system used around 2007 (185 for a win, +5 for a lap led and another +5 for most laps led) maybe adjusted a bit (I don't think someone who leads 1 lap should receive the same bonus points as someone who leads 150 laps, because somebody else led 300 - if they're at Martinsville or Bristol) 29. Mannoroth posted: 03.04.2021 - 7:30 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 28. True and they weren't racing in lower series that much like others (Terry Labonte or Dale Jarrett, for example). And I'm glad that at least some people here understood what I meant. That anonymous guy said championships, which means both 2015 and 2019. I agree that 2015 doesn't have the same weight as 2019, but saying neither of them is legitimate, that's a total BS. And you're also right that he wouldn't win that title in 2019 with the old Chase rules. He would finish 4th. 34. For example? Bill Elliott did win the Daytona 500, but Rusty Wallace didn't just like Kyle. And passing the entire field at Talladega under green twice or running out of fuel and getting a little splash of fuel to keep the lead at Watkins Glen doesn't count, because it's not possible nowadays. 36. Mile501 posted: 03.04.2021 - 8:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) To clear up this debate, Kyle Busch is indeed the only driver to have won 20+ races in each of the top 3 series. Greg Biffle's numbers come closest to 20+ in each series, but barring some unexpected and spectacular comeback, he'll never quite make it. Kevin Harvick could get there if he runs more truck races in the years to come. Total Wins (Cup-Xfinity-Trucks): Kyle Busch: 57 - 97 - 59 Kevin Harvick: 58 - 47 - 14 Greg Biffle: 19 - 20 - 17 Those are the only 3 drivers that even have 10+ wins in each series. It is also worth noting that Todd Bodine has 15 Busch (Xfinity) wins and 22 truck wins, but no Cup wins. No other drivers have 15+ wins in Cup and trucks. Several drivers have 15+ wins in Cup and Busch/Xfinity. 37. RandomFacts posted: 03.04.2021 - 1:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Having 30+ wins in all three series does not impress me that much seeing how most cup stars with tons of victories did not bother running alot of truck races if at all, some others didnt run alot of xfinity races if at all. Had drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, or older legends like Richard Petty, David Pearson, and others like that ran as many Truck races as Kyle Busch then they would also have inflated win numbers. Just saying, its easy to look so good with win counts when you run more than anyone else in this series. 38. UnderdogFan89 posted: 03.04.2021 - 2:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @35 Before I begin, I must say that Kyle Busch is destined for the Hall of Fame and is one of the greatest drivers of his generation. I do not doubt that one bit. All I'm saying is that it's very difficult to determine greatness BETWEEN generations, so saying one person's career is better than another due to only number of wins and championships is somewhat murky. You mentioned Bill Elliot winning the Daytona 500, which is true. I was looking at more than just one race, though. Both Elliot and Wallace have a double-digit win season, which Busch lacks in Cup. Also, their consistency is what makes them great. Elliot had a streak of six straight top-4 points finishes (the equivalent of making the final race of the chase in today's points, which Busch almost tied last season but fell a bit short). Wallace had 10 straight top 10 point finishes, and 16 out of 17 from 1986 to 2002. A lot of these Busch could tie or surpass in the coming years, considering I believe Busch still has plenty left in the tank. One last thing about Busch. The last time he started this far back in the field in trucks? 2007, when he drove at Loudon (started 31st) and Talladega (started 29th) for Billy Ballew. These were also his worst ever starting positions in trucks. I'm not sure how big pit selection will be in this race, but Busch could be surrounded by people that he normally wouldn't pit with due to usually starting up (much!) closer to the front. 40. 34McDowellFan posted: 03.04.2021 - 2:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Add the 56 to the list of Camping World trucks in the field Pretty sure we're up to 9 or 10 now 41. Kyle won his 123rd truck start, it was his 41st truck win. Logano won once in 7 starts, (6 came with BKR, 2013-2015, years after becoming a full time Cup driver), and he wouldn't have won if Custer didn't stop on the front stretch and bring out the last caution. 1 out of 7. Kyle's 59 in 155 starts is about 38%, slightly better than every 1 out of 3. Brad won 1 out of 66 starts (then failed post race inspection after his only win). This was the norm rather than the exception in their era, which also makes it difficult to do comparisons across eras. Look at Dale Jarrett, he won a few races with a team on its way down and with Gibbs before they were a great team, didn't get to drive great cars until he was 39, and even then didn't get a CC he clicked with until the next year, and then proceeded become a regular winner. 44. I took just the 5 best seasons of each driver's career and compared them, so that some of the impacts noted in the previous comment were negated (poor equipment early in one's career, a shorter career than other drivers, etc.). Here is that blog, which ranks drivers' 5 best seasons based on top 5s and laps led: https://www.racing-reference.info/showblog?id=3729 Here's how some of the drivers being discussed here ranked: 10. Kevin Harvick 15. Dale Jarrett 16. Rusty Wallace 20. Kyle Busch 25. Bill Elliott Granted, though, I don't think any comparison between drivers of different eras is perfect. 45. You're not impressed by Kyle's lower series wins and I'm not impressed by Richard Petty's wins from races that were shorter than 250 miles. Everybody has something. 39. Double-digit win season was easier to obtain back then than nowadays due to a lack of competition. There's a reason why almost all double-digit seasons happened in the previous century except that Jimmie Johnson's one in 2007. The same for a position in the final standings. When you had drivers that had to skip some race from time to time, it was easier to end up in the top 10. Starting in the back of the field or not, he will still end up racing for the win in the end, if someone doesn't ruin his race. It really doesn't matter, where he starts. 41. It was funny how Brad Keselowski was trying to win at least one Truck race and that win wasn't coming. And then he finally did it, but failed post-race inspection, which would be a DQ nowadays, so he would still be winless. But honestly, Kyle wouldn't have 59 Truck wins now, because he also failed post-race inspection at least 7 times in his Truck career. 45. Isn't that a random draw, which isn't exactly random? We already saw how Aric Almirola was constantly starting in front positions, while others always had to get to front from the back. But unless you want a lot of stage points, it doesn't matter, because you can get to the front before the checkered flag. 48. Wallace got his double digit win season in '93 (not exactly ancient history), with 28 drivers attempting every race. Busch's 2018 8 win season had 29 attempt every race. In '93, 10 drivers won in 30 races; in '18, 12 drivers won in 36 races. I.E. it's the same percentage. Otherwise, I think you actually made my point? It's extremely difficult to compare/contrast across generations due to changes like this (hence my original "so-and-so is better because of xyz being murky" comment). And the comment about his starting position was just an interesting fact. I see Busch being in the top 10 by lap 15-20 at the latest (are they having a competition caution?). But the pit stall selection will be interesting if he's coming out and others around him are just coming in. Another fun fact about Kyle Busch: with Jimmie Johnson's retirement, he is the only multiple-time Cup champion racing in Cup today. 50. In early 90s, you could still win a race by 10+ seconds and when something happened about 3 laps before the checkered flag, it was basically over. No stress in form of GWC or any potentional strategy how to win, you just finished the race under caution and won. Today, you can easily get robbed and Kyle Busch could tell stories about it like during the 2014 DAV 200, when they threw a caution, when he was like 50 meters from taking the white flag. That simply sucks big time. 53. Mile501 posted: 03.05.2021 - 1:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @48 - Thank you! In hindsight, I'm just glad I got it completed and posted before blogs went away. 54. I'm indifferent on the winner this week, I don't like JHN, but I'm relieved Rhodes didn't win again. Another Toyota victory, they took all top 5 spots. Austin Hill strong again, JHN will be a threat every race, Friesen looks like he's back to 2018/2019 form, Crafton has been able to run up front, Rhodes already has 2 wins, Enfinger has 11 more races in the 98, and he just finished 7th with Rohrbaugh's truck, Eckes could do something in his 8 remaining in the 98. This could be Toyota's best year since 2014, when they (Kyle Busch-7, Erik Jones-3, Bubba Wallace-4, Matt Crafton-2, Peters-1, Sauter-1) won 18 of 22 races. I'm sure they won't match or better that this year, even though DGR & Niece don't seem to have race winning speed like Hattori, Thorsport & KBM Raph Lessard shows how important stage points are, he's 15th in the points with finishes of 23rd, 26th and 30th - an average of 26.3 Hailie Deegan is 29th in points with finishes of 24th, 28th, 28th - an average of 26.6 Crazy how they've finished so close in each race this year, especially considering how different all 3 tracks have been: a superspeedway, a road course, and a 1.5 142. These are Scott Miller's (senior vice president of competition) comments on the matter. ?Those are tough calls,? Miller told SiriusXM. ?That obviously came up again this weekend. You know, it?s hard for us to know what is going on inside the car, but we have our competition meeting, and I?m sure there will be discussions on the particular one that prompted that question and we?ll kind of review it. ?But what we can?t let happen, and what we will probably be more inclined to do moving forward is, having a flat tire and trying to get back to pit road is not an excuse to spin out. So if we have to crack down a little bit harder on those things happening so that doesn?t become a trend, we will certainly react to that.? 145.
