Porsche provided the series with factory support during its original season but quickly lost interest and dropped it. A new deal for Chevrolet Camaros was quickly secured for the second season, with those cars becoming much more associated with IROC in the years to come. 14. There series invited 12 drivers and used the first three races at Riverside the prior October with all of them as qualifying rounds. The top-6 after these three races were then invited to take part in the final race here at Daytona during Speedweeks. Emerson Fittipaldi, Denny Hulme, Bobby Allison, Richard Petty, Gordon Johncock, and Roger McCluskey missed the cut. 15. The Silver Fox fell far enough behind that he twice skipped the infield portion of the track entirely trying to catch back up. He later joked that if he could have cut across Lake Lloyd he may have tried it. The shortcuts didn't do him much good, he finished a distant fourth two laps down anyway. 16.
