Mario Andretti clipped the left rear corner of Darrell Waltrip's car off
turn four while running for 3rd place and they crashed in front of the
rest of the field, leaving the others with no place to go but into each
other and the inside pit wall. If you want to see the footage of the
crash, look for a video called Havoc V. 3 on ebay or half.com.

The largest crash in IROC, and first big one in the series. 10 cars
involved.

Don Whittington got through the first wreck but had a violent crash
later in the race when he lost it off turn 4 and hit both the outside
wall and then the inside wall head-on, his head hitting (or almost
hitting, happened so fast it was hard to tell) the steering wheel on the
inside impact. So many cars were sidelined by the early wreck the IMSA
racer still got a top-5 in his final IROC start.

This was Peter Gregg's final ARCA race, the road racer committed suicide
nine months later.

One of only two career oval races for Clay Regazzoni

This stock car race was the penultimate event for Formula 1 driver Clay
Regazzoni's professional racing career. Just 15 days after this race
Regazzoni's career was ended by a vicious crash in the Long Beach Grand
Prix that confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

This was also the last IROC race for Peter Gregg, he would take his own
life nine months later.

The giant wreck was almost the end of IROC as a whole. With this pileup
having seriously thinned out the herd for its fleet of Camaros and a
lack of corporate sponsorship causing some financial issues the decision
was made to put the series on pause for a few years and allow interest
in it to build back up.
