This was the first race for the new IROC Dodge Daytonas. The Mopars
replaced the old iconic Chevrolet Camaros the series used throughout the
1970s and 1980s, the Daytonas only lasted until 1993 before being
discontinued and replaced by the Dodge Avenger.

The development time needed for the new IROC Dodge Daytonas is why this
season was only three races long. The new cars were not ready in time to
do the series' traditional opener at Daytona during Speedweeks.

Earnhardt's first IROC win came as he started his fifth full-time series
in the season (with one additional one-off in 1980). Interestingly while
the Intimidator is synonymous with Chevrolets he never won an IROC race
during the years where the tour raced the famous IROC-Z Chevy Camaros,
his win coming here as the series debuted its new Dodge race cars.

Dorsey Schroeder, at the time the reigning SCCA Trans-Am champion,
credits his sixth place run here in his first major oval race with
spurning an interest in looking more seriously at stock car racing in
the years that followed. He ultimately stayed in road racing but he
dabbled in NASCAR Winston Cup and ARCA for a few seasons after this.

ABC aired this race on a several-week tape delay as was standard for
IROC coverage at the time. The race was aired Sunday, May 27, following
live coverage of the Indianapolis 500 with a tape delayed coverage of
the Monaco Grand Prix following it as part of a racing triple-header.

Paul Page, Sam Posey and Bobby Unser were the commentators. Jack Arute
was the sole pit road reporter.
