It was mainly as an injury replacement. Davy Jones, who had finished 2nd in the previous year's Indy 500, was orignally to have that spot in IROC but was severely injured in a crash at Walt Disney World Speedway in January 1997. Second, 1997 was Darrell's big 25th anniversity of racing celebration. Darrell would finish 11th, next to last, in all four IROC events in the 1997 season 5. After taking the checkered flag he did another lap around the track at full speed because he was watching his competitors so close, including NASCAR runners-up Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt, that he missed seeing the checkered flag and did another lap just to make sure the race was really over. Little Al was thrilled he finally tallied a win at Daytona, he had tried and failed for 12 years in several series before he finally found the key to victory lane. Mark Martin and Al Unser Jr said they'd draft together before this race started. Martin pointed out after the finish that during the race they never saw each other but still somehow finished 1-2. 10. His 10th place run was the only time all year the CART racer didn't finish last. 11.
