Arie Luyendyk was involved in a horrific accident exiting turn four
after contact with Tommy Kendall. Jeff Burton, Tony Stewart, and Kendall
also had damage but Tony and Kendall continued on.

The one factor that probably saved Luyendyk's life was the new padding
placed on the inside wall just before pit road. The former two-time Indy
500 winner hit the barriers and sent them scattering across the track,
which may have damaged some of the other cars. This was in fact a very
early version of the SAFER barrier now used at most NASCAR-sanctioned
tracks.

Thank God Arie was okay. It syas here that Tony Stewart is representing
NA$CAR. He was actually the reigning IRL Champion.

Mark Martin's first ever win at Indy. He'd go on to finish 2nd in that
year's Brickyard 400.

Last IROC race for former CART champ Jimmy Vasser. Vasser led 36 of 40
laps but had to settle for third.

Mark Martin wins the race and in doing so jumps past Tony Stewart to win
the IROC title, his third in a row and fourth in five years. Quite a
feat to win three tiles in a row in any racing series, much less a best
of the best series like IROC.

Again I have numbers wrong because a driver opted out of their points
position to start at the back, in this case Tony Stewart who didn't
think he had enough practice. The corrected numbers are below.

Actually post 9 Martin came into this race with the point lead. Both
Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton could have taken the title from him but
while Mark tried to get to the front quick both Jeffs stayed near the
back and were collected in Arie's accident. Burton's car was terminally
damaged, ending his title hopes.

Dale Earnhardt flatspotted his tires missing Arie's crash, he got to
make a rare IROC pit stop for new rubber because of it, he even had time
to beinterviewed for ABC's broadcast while doing it. His tires were
flatspotted right down to the inner-liner by the near miss.

Paul Page and Benny Parsons were the commentators. Jack Arute was the
sole pit road reporter.

Weird that Jeff Burton finished behind Arie Luyendyk, despite the fact
that Burton drove away from the wreck.
