This was the first time on US soil that Dale Earnhardt and Dale
Earnhardt Jr raced against one another. Earnhardt Jr ran near the front
of the pack before being wiped out in a crash that also eliminated
Rusty, Cheever, and Jeff Burton.

Dale Earnhardt made a last chance move on Mark Martin and made it work,
claiming the win.

Bobby Labonte makes his IROC debut as a series regular having previously
run a race in 1997 subbing for Robby Gordon. Labonte, a future IROC
champion, was somewhat subbing again here. That spot in IROC was
originally intended for Al Unser Jr. but Unser withdrew, opening the
door for Labonte, when his daughter Cody sadly came down with Tranverse
Myelitis. Labonte later donated his IROC winnings from this season to
help start The Cody Unser First Step Foundation.

Labonte received a proper full-year invitation to IROC for the first
time the following year.

Darrell Waltrip's first event at Daytona that he called as a "guest
commentator with Bob Jenkins and Benny Parsons in the booth because Ned
Jarrett had commitments with CBS.

The IROC Pontiac Firebird fleet got a modified paint scheme for 1999 as
almost all of the multi-hued Firebirds got big black strip down the
side. The lone exception was the black car, which got a red strip in the
same style. The IROC cars would maintain this look through the end of
the 2003 season when True Value's sponsorship of the series ended.
