Bobby and Tony were locked in a furious fight for the title and the
victory. Late in the race, the two made contact exiting turn four and
Stewart slapped the wall.

Furious was right! They ran almost 2 whole laps around Indy
side-by-side. You're really not supposed to do that at Indy. And Tony
proved that when he smacked the wall off of turn 4.

I was at all the IROC at Indy races, and as far as exctitement goes this
one and Mark Martin's charge from starting last to winning the inaugural
event would be the two best.

This was notably the last IROC race where the series had any
manufacturer support as Pontiac pulled its backing from the series for
2002. It wasn't a surprising move as the 2002 model year that was just
beginning would be the last for the Firebird Trans-Am model used in the
series. IROC would however not be able to find a new manufacturer to
take over the sponsorship duties so its fleet of Firebird stock cars
would remain in use throughout the rest of the series.
