Little Al represented the IRL; he left Marlboro Team Penske and the CART
FedEx Championship in 2000 to return to Rick Galles (remember the old
Valvoline car?) in the IRL.

In addition to Castroneves, Hornish and Sprague this was the debut of
eventual 2002 IROC champion Kevin Harvick and then-defending World of
Outlaws champion Danny Lasoski.

Scott Sharp also makes his first IROC start since 1994.

There were two notable NASCAR drivers missing for the 2002 NASCAR
season. Ricky Rudd was coming off another great season in Winston Cup
competition but the 1992 IROC champion was not invited back due to a
recent offseason back surgery that had limited his availability during
Speed Weeks.

The other, as mentioned earlier, was reigning Cup champion Jeff Gordon.
Gordon declined his invitation citing his need to fulfill his ownership
duties as part owner of Hendrick Motorsports' new #48 Lowe's Chevrolet
with rookie driver Jimmie Johnson.

Tony Stewart and Sam Hornish Jr. would finish 1-2 at Daytona again 11
years later in the 2013 season opening Nationwide Series race.
