I happened to pull my Kodak pocket instamatic up just in time to catch a picture of him flying through the air. (Dating myself with the Kodak pocket!). The picture still hangs on my wall. I also recall that a lady in the row in front of me was on the verge of collapse. I asked someone what was wrong with her and the guy it was Randy's mother! Overcome with fear as one can imagine. I also recall being late for class that night because it took so much time to repair the barrier. 8. (Guardrail repair) Terry Labonte was leading on the restart after at lap 20, until Bobby Allison passed him on lap 42. Allison would lead the rest of the way, with Harry Gant nipping Labonte at the line. Notes he won the 1983 consolation race. https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=egofAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ttIEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3346%2C997913 There's also a photo next to it of the wall/guardrail damage. 10. McDuffie's string of 15-straight Daytona 500s came to an end in this race as his 16th-place finish meant the fan favorite in #70 came up just short of racing his way into the Great American Race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
