McDuffie suffered second and third degree burns on around 15% of his body from a fiery third lap crash. The most severe burns were on his hands and legs. 2. That's why he drove the #89 car (which finished 12th in this qualifier with Jim Sauter at the keyboard). 4. Dave posted: 03.04.2007 - 4:09 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) At the Keyboard? 5. Matthew Lewis posted: 03.01.2009 - 6:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yes indeed, Michael Waltrip bought Jim Sauter's ride for the Daytona 500 after failing to qualify. The simple reason was: Michael Waltrip & Country Time Lemonade (his sponsor at the time) were running the entire schedule and Jim Sauter & his Evinrude Mueller Bros. team were only running part-time. So they wanted drivers points for Michael (the provisional system was much different back then) and exposure for Country Time in their first ever NASCAR race. To again elaborate further on the teams/car owners: #7-Alan Kulwicki was obviously owned by himself. #86-Rick Jeffrey was owned by Doreen Jeffrey (as was the case in the Daytona 500 in which he qualified for) #56-Joey Sonntag--I have no idea??? #39-Blackie Wangerin was a self-owned entrant driving a plain white 1987 T-Bird. #02-Joe Booher---No idea??? Presumably self-owned, as his later entrants throughout his career would be. #29-Cale Yarborough was obviously owned by himself. #70-JD McDuffie, again, was obviously owned by himself. He had long since parted ways with the Winkles who owned his cars at Daytona in 1987. #85-Bobby Gerhart was owned by himself and his brother, Billy just as they were at Pocono later that year http://www.racing-reference.info/drivdet?id=gerhabo01&yr=1988&series=W 6. It was the first time in his entire career that he had a brand new car in his shop, and it only lasted three laps into the qualifying race. 8. Speedweeks wouldn't be kind to Martin or Roush, with the latter making his first entry in NASCAR after years in sportscar racing including much SCCA Trans-Am success, as while the new #6 T-Bird was fast and able to fall back on its qualifying time to make the race the car quickly overheated and lasted only a few laps longer in the 500 then it did in this qualifier. 9. Sarel became the first, and to date still only, driver from an African nation to attempt the Daytona 500 but the former 24 Hours of Daytona winner didn't make it into the field for the main event after his Exxon #18 was wiped out in the big one here in his 125 qualifier. 13. As a result, he pulled over, let the whole field charge past and coasted back to the pits. 14.
