He already qualified himself on the front row so maybe just wanted to bring the car back in one piece. I take it back if i'm wrong. 13. The Goodyears apparently were causing drivers to lose speed after a couple of laps. 14. Marlin actually coasted across the line for 2nd place. 15. Speedwells 1989 was a big one for the Budweiser #11 Junior Johnson team as it made the big switch to Ford after its long tenure with General Motors. Labonte ran great throughout Speedweeks with a top-5 in the Clash, a win in his Twin, and a top-10 in the 500. 16. They didn't throw a caution every time a car got out of the groove back then. 19. It looks like row 15 only had one car in it; it looks like he never hit the track. https://newspaperarchive.com/bluefield-daily-telegraph-feb-17-1989-p-20/ 20. The Intimidator went for a wild ride as he rolled violently in the tri-oval, ripping down 100 feet of catchfence in front of the thankfully empty grandstands. Earnhardt still came back to dominant this race en route to a top-5 finish. He'd still get in the Busch race, borrowing a green Pontiac from Greg Sacks, before again coming close but falling short in the 500 itself as he picked up a pair of top-5s for the weekend. The curtain comes down on Hoss Ellington's #1 with a whimper and not a bang. The team that had come so close to Daytona glory several times before came into Speedweeks 1989 unsponsored with its Buick Regal adorned with its signature red paint scheme and the famous #1 but little else as they drafted in Modified Tour standout Doug Heveron to drive it, replacing Dale Jarrett after he left the team to replace the retiring Cale Yarborough. Heveron was looking to make his first Cup start in more than two years. He qualified near the back and was running there when the plain jane Buick blew a motor on lap 2 then coasted back to the pits. Ellington's team closed up not long afterward, supposedly Rich Bickle bought the team's last race cars to use when he did a pair of Cup races late in the season. 21.
