Despite the DNQ in the team's only attempt, Racing Champions still made a diecast of his #57 Matco Tools Chevy 4. This was Irvan's second-straight 125 win. He won in 1994, missed the 1995 events due to his injuries, and returned to another triumph here. 7. Thought it was blasphemous. 10. Braindead Zombie posted: 02.23.2016 - 12:32 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Because he came back from a near fatal injury (actually he did "die" but they revived him)??? I get that some people didn't like how he drove but you have to respect what he accomplished coming back from that. 11. Per statistics it appears Ernie dominated the race but Schrader and Gordon were trying to size him up for a last lap pass and it came right down to just that. Schrader made his move off turn 2 and had the lead down the backstretch into turn 3 and 4 with Gordon pushing him but as they came to the line Ernie came right back and side drafted off Schrader. In a last ditch effort to try to win for himself, Gordon went high to make it 3 wide only to get snookered himself with Andretti sneaking in 3rd. Ernie got Schrader by inches in the photo finish. Meanwhile the battle for 15th was a race long fight between Little, Chuck Bown and Purvis. Purvis had it the majority of the race but Little used a draft with 9 laps to go to get by both Purvis and Bown. Bown was able to dispatch Purvis but could never mount a run on Little. Bown would go on to DNQ, where Little, who absolutely needed to race his way in did just that. Tracy Leslie ran the familiar #73 which used to run for every Daytona 500 with Phil Barkdoll. Phil started to step aside driving duties back to 1993 when he would put in Stanley Smith who got taken out in an accident not of his own doing. Here Leslie was surprisingly not a factor as that 73 almost always felt like it was a contender to sneak into the field. The 57 had a curious history. As stated it would even have a diecast made of it, but it was run by Steve Seligman the majority of 1996, who DNQ'd in race #1 driving the #65. Joe Ruttman was running strong for the Hover team but his ignition failed when he was battling around the transfer spot. One other tiny piece of note, Rusty Wallace was up in the front of this race but got the tiniest bit of contact from Bown which sent him into a near spin, in order to save it he drove down pit road instead and was never able to recover as there was no caution for the entirety of the race 12. 42KylePetty42 posted: 02.21.2017 - 7:04 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I remember a interview after this race, on RPM 2nite (since Twin 125's weren't typically aired until Saturday morning) Chuck Bown was jumping up, cheering so excited he made The Daytona 500. Then found out 2 hours later, when upon further review the photo finish determined he missed it by inches 13. CBS rushed over with the camera to get in the middle of what they called an "animated conversation" between the two. They tried to play it off when the cameras got there but you could tell that Ken was still very mad and trying to keep it in house. My reaction watching the final lap before I knew about that was that Gordon just cost Schrader that race. Likely a lot of pressure on Ken too with this being the start of his contract year and needing to have a good season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
