Petty's new team had no owner's points to fall back on and his qualifying time wouldn't have been good enough to make the 500. Also a nice run by Hut Stricklin to make the Daytona 500 in a year where neither his owner's points nor qualifying speed would have been good enough to get him into the 500 :) 2. jp posted: 02.25.2009 - 9:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Under my way,(top 21 in each qualifyer advances)Andretti would be in the 500. 3. Unlike some years where that spot has been decided by inches, however, Petty was at the tail of a 14-car lead draft by race's end, with 15th-place Bradberry half a lap behind him. 8. Craven blamed himself on the incident when he tried to slot in front of Chad Little where there was little to no room. Craven spun and crashed into Speed who went back up the track and collected Allen. Speed had a plain red Melling car after the University of Nebraska fell through in the offseason. Just missing the field for a 2nd straight year was the Sadler Bros #95 (in 96 it was Bown, this time it was Bradberry though this time it was by a larger margin). Larry Pearson, in an unsponsored and financially floundering Bud Moore team also missed the show. It was the first time Bud Moore missed the Daytona 500 since 1972 when Larry Pearson's father, David missed the show driving for them. 11.
