Kasey Kahne will be a contender for the 500 with his performance today and last Saturday. Congratulations to Mike Bliss and Tommy Baldwin Racing. For the second year in a row the 36 car races its way into the Great American Race. It's a shame for Casey Mears missing the 500 by two finishing positions. What a difference a year makes. Last year he was in a well funded super team and this year misses the race in a independant team which raises the question. Should NASCAR make a rule if you compete in all the races and finish in the top 25 points, does that grant you an automatic spot in the field? Just something to think about 3. NASCAR has really hit a HR with this new package. The overall racing so far has been so much better than last year. 4. rw posted: 02.11.2010 - 6:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tough break for Mike Wallace, since he's a really good underdog to always watch for on Restrictor Plate races. Anyone know if Boris Said made it? I'm thinking he's locked into it just because of the Owner Points. Can Someone clear that up for me? Brad K, really is going to be a darkhorse this season, performed solidly in that Penske car which I thought was never going to perform good after Newman released. 5. Dale Jr. actually was a threat for the win for a bit there, but after he damaged his car the team decided to play it safe and protect their front row starting spot...you gotta feel for Casey Mears,he raced hard to put that 90 car in the 500 and came up just a bit short..anyways congrats to Mike Bliss and Scott Speed for racing their way in, Speed racing in also enabled Micheal Waltrip to get in on speed...it would of been weird having a 500 without at least one Waltrip in it. 7. 18fan posted: 02.11.2010 - 7:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It would have been weird without a Waltrip, but it would've been better IMO. 8. 18fan posted: 02.11.2010 - 7:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Michael should be thankful for Scott Speed actually driving well for the first time in his Cup career. 9. That's twice in 8 months he's beat Smoke head to head. Why the HELL was Mikey in the booth for this race? And why did we have to keep seeing shots of him staring intently at the screen? Is this supposed to be some sort of major story? He has won the 500 twice within the past 10 years yet he has to sweat out Casey Mears in a car with a showstring budget finishing behind Scott Slow just to MAKE the field. That is just sad and shows that he is somebody who never had a shred of talent. But he makes sure the story is always about him even though doesn't deserve one second of attention. I was very pleased with Brad K's run. He led early, made a pretty silly pit road mistake, but he calmly worked his way back to the front pack before Sideways Sam got loose in front of him and he had to check up to keep from running him over. Hopefully all those off season moves help the #12 car. 11. He gets by far the most attention on broadcasts, like Michael. They both looked good when DEI was competitive, but Jr. has done worse in Hendrick cars. Them combined doesn't equal half of the drivers on the circuit. 13. I won't comment too much on this until I watch the replay, however I heard the 82 or 77 made contact with him which bent the fenders. I'll have to watch the replay to confirm that but if thats the case you can't really blame him for getting run into. 14. I've been a fan of his since the first full year in the Nationwide Series and I sure am hoping this ride with MWR gets him somewhere. 16. Scott Slow's left side tires were definitely below the yellow line when he went by Mears, yet strangely SPEED never showed a replay and NASCAR never said anything...guess Brian France decided we couldn't have a Daytona 500 without a Waltrip. I hope he makes the next few races since KUM is supposedly not going down the S&P path. Krashalotski put up an impressive performance, but threw it all away entering the pits, but made a decent recovery later. "He has won the 500 twice within the past 10 years yet he has to sweat out Casey Mears in a car with a showstring budget finishing behind Scott Slow just to MAKE the field." Well no shit Sherlock, that's because he was doing a one race deal with no owner points to fall back on. And his qualifying time was still better than Reutimann and Truex. "That is just sad and shows that he is somebody who never had a shred of talent." Guys with no talent don't win a single race, let alone 11 in the Busch series and 4 in Cup. I'm happy that Michael made it. It's good to know he gets to end his career at the track which defined him. That's exactly what it is. People like Kryle Busch, Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, and Harvick getting their "championships" while JJ just racks 'em up year after year in the real Cup Series. Last year was totally pathetic with Kryle. "He is now a NASCAR champion!" Let's say Brad doesn't race full time this year. Then Carl would be the only driver racing that had a chance for a title. He would win by like 700 points. The same with 2011 that he plans on racing. Then Carl, would realize that "this isn't fun anymore" and we could at least get some REAL champions. Even if the cup guys hog the wins. But now we have to watch Keselowski vs. Edwards for two years, atleast. 27. DaleSrFanForever posted: 02.13.2010 - 11:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) One thing I will say: let's not get too up or down on how people perform this week at Daytona. This past decade has not been kind to Daytona 500 winners with only two exceptions. Of course we have Drunktrip winning in '01 and '03, the disappearing in all other non-plate races in those years (just like his whole career). Ward Burton won in '02 and could only finish 25th in points despite winning another race that year. Jeff Gordon won in '05 but looked totally lost at the intermediate tracks, causing him to miss the cha$e. Harvick won in '07 and has been in the witness protection program in all points paying races since. Ryan Newman's corpse won in '08 and announced he was leaving that team by summer. Like Harvick, he hasn't won a race since. And Kenseth won last year (yes it was rain shortened, but he did take the lead under green flag conditions in a back up car) and Mr. Consistency missed the cha$e. The only two to flourish recently were Dale Jr in 2004, leading to his best season with 6 wins and a shot at the championship even though he made his customary array of bone headed mistakes. The next year he legally changed his name to Dale Mears and has won 3 races in the 5 years since. And of course Jimmie Johnson (with Chad Knaus at home) won in '06 and springboarded himself to 4 consecutive (and counting) Cup championships. And since that win, his performances in Daytona have been mostly abysmal. He doesn't even handle well there most of the time anymore. Of course it isn't a cha$e track. If it were he would have 4 or 5 wins there by now. Yes, Kasey has looked great this Speedweeks and has a great shot to win the 500 (how awesome would that be!). And in my opinion he is one of the best drivers out there. But, as much as I hate to say this, I don't see this being a good year for him. First of all, I doubt we'll make it to Mother's Day before he announces him and Budweiser are going to an elite team (if Dale Mears gets off to a crappy start, he might take over that ride. Daon't rule that out). That team is still in disarray and he deserves better. Plus, he is basically driving for a Roush satellite team. I think Jack will treat them like red headed step children. But don't worry too much, 2011 will be awesome for him. 29. Mike posted: 02.13.2010 - 12:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "if Dale Mears gets off to a crappy start, he might take over that ride. Just wondering. 30. 12345Dude posted: 02.13.2010 - 3:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Next year he legally changed his name to Dale Mears" Haha. Are you frigging kidding me? Allmendinger ran the last 3 races of 2009 in a Ford and never finished lower than 13th, and Sadler got a top 10 at Talladega, despite being a part of Newman's flip. If those guys can run well in Fords, you don't think Kahne will have a good season. "if Dale Mears gets off to a crappy start, he might take over that ride. Daon't rule that out)." Haha, you think HMS is going to go through the trouble of merging together the 5 and 88 teams if they were planning on canning Dale Jr? You can cry about how Kahne deserves better all you want, but Dale Jr isn't going anywhere. 32. DaleSrFanForever posted: 02.13.2010 - 9:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If Dale Mears starts winning races again and running really good consistently then I will go back to his former name. Seeing as how he has the highest sponsorship package and is driving out of the same shop as the guy who won 5 races last year and finished 2nd in points to the yearly champion, that shouldn't be a stretch. Until then I'll keep calling him by his legal name. And I'm serious: don't rule out Dale Mears getting canned. Yes, Amp and the National Guard are paying out a TON of sponsorship money, but Budweiser pays really well too. For a conglomerate like Hendrick Motorsports, it wouldn't be that much of a drop, and would pay itself back quickly with the MUCH better results Kahne would post. Hell, Kahne has done better than Dale Mears since 2007 despite driving for an organization that has gone through 3 ownership structure changes, 2 mergers, and a whole lot of uncertainty. Hell, Kasey himself doesn't even know who is running the place. So it isn't really a stretch. 33. If they weren't so affiliated with Roush I would feel better about this, but Jack almost always seems to be about 3 steps behind HMS. I still don't think he has a good grasp of how to deal with satellite teams. Look, I'm not saying he is going to go winless, finish 25th in points, make a ton of pit road mistakes, and have everyone question his mental stability. I think he'll win a race or two, but I don't think he'll make the cha$e or contend as much as he did last year. But again, I hope I get proven wrong about this. 34. Mike posted: 02.14.2010 - 12:53 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) IF Jr gets off to a bad start I think HMS will resort to drastic measures and convince Tony Eury Sr to come back to Cup and be Dale's crew chief. If he continues to run bad with Tony Sr then I agree there is a real possibility Rick could replace Jr with someone else. I doubt this will happen though. 35. Bronco posted: 02.14.2010 - 1:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "And I'm serious: don't rule out Dale Mears getting canned. Yes, Amp and the National Guard are paying out a TON of sponsorship money, but Budweiser pays really well too." Maybe, but there just so happens to be something called driver and sponsor contracts and you don't mess with those unless you want to get Sadlered. I'm pretty sure Dale Jr doesn't have a performance clause in his contract, so unless he runs his car out of the top 35, he's not going anywhere, at least not until after the 2012 season. "with the MUCH better results Kahne would post." You don't know that. Going to a better team doesn't always translate into better results. It didn't work out for Dale Jr and Jamie McMurray, and when Brian Vickers got away from the 25 car, he actually did a lot better. 36. DaleSrFanForever posted: 02.14.2010 - 11:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "You don't know that." You are right. I don't "know" that, but I'm making an educated guess. It just seems that when good drivers (with their head on straight) go to HMS, they post great results. I will cite two examples: Mark Martin. In the eight previous years before 2009, he won 3 races. Granted two of those were partial schedules for a mediocre team, but he wasn't lighting up the win column by any means. In '09 he won 5 races and finished 2nd in points to Superman. Not bad. Terry Labonte: Before he joined HMS he had a long stretch of winless seasons driving for bad teams, and before that some really disappointing seasons with a declining Junior Johnson team. He joins HMS, wins 3 races (back when they only ran 29 races a year) and two years later is a champion for the first time in 12 years. So judging by Kasey's ability to flourish with a team in total disarray (but with Budweiser's huge checks) and the fact he never flipped out on them, I think he would put up BIG win numbers with HMS. And as far as Brian Vickers, he's somebody who is also mentally fragile. With all the pressure at HMS and their buttoned up approach, he just tanked. With Red Bull's renegade operation, no expectations, and no microscope, he did better. Once he won a race, made the cha$e, and got a new contract, he tanked again. So those are the reasons I feel Kasey would be an elite contender at HMS. And as far as Driver #88, he might not so much "get fired" but possibly be "reassigned". Him and Kelley have expressed interest in making JR Motorsports a Cup team. Maybe Rick would do a SHR-type deal with him, and free up room in his complex for Kasey. I just think if Rick Hendrick wants him out of his stable, he'll do it. To me, the biggest thing holding back a Dale Jr "reassignment" is the father/son relationship him and Rick have. Rick is the easy going, gentle, "it's ok buddy" father figure Dale never had. Dale Sr would be chewing him a new one every single week if he were around and Jr was doing what he's doing. And of course, since Rick lost Ricky, that somewhat fills a void for Rick (but not totally by any means). That could be his saving grace. 37. Smiff_99 posted: 02.15.2010 - 10:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thank you, DaleSrFanForever......you just highlighted something that everybody seems to overlook: Hendrick babies Jr. Every time Jr. has a craptastic day, Hendrick pats him on the shoulder, tells him he'll try to fix it, whispers sweet nothings in his ear and then goes back to signing checks. If Jr. was driving for his Father, his performance would be sooooooo much better than it is right now. Why? Because Sr. WOULD have been chewing him out weekly.....and it would've produced results. The worst things to happen to Jr's career was the death of his dad. Period. 38.
