Guy knows how to race on the plate tracks, and his ECR power doesn't hurt either. Dark horse for sure. Bill Elliott and JJ Yeley raced their way into the Daytona 500, finishing 15th and 17th respectively. Joe Nemechek was trying all race to get his teammate Conway, and his car #97, into the show (Joe was already locked in by speed) but failed. Ryan Newman got turned around by Tony Stewart early in the race but Newman recovered for 10th. 2. Jarrett88fan posted: 02.17.2011 - 6:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18fan, Jeff Gordon is certainly up to speed in the draft, especially if Bayne is behind him. Mark Martin looked pretty sporty when he had a fast car pushing him, but the other two, Jr. and JJ looked just plain slow. In addition, Stewart's car overheated on at least one occasion during the first Duel when he and Mark were hooked up. The constant swapping was detrimental to both cars. 5. 18fan posted: 02.17.2011 - 6:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jarrett88fan, I should have been more clear, but I meant that when they push the cars don't seem to go very well. 6. Bronco posted: 02.17.2011 - 6:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Very poor racing in my opinion. You had the same 7 or 8 pairs of cars drafting together the entire race. Seriously, it is ridiculous for there to be 20 second gaps between the leader of the race and the 12th place car at a restrictor plate track. Although this type of racing is better than the follow the leader type crap that was the ARCA race, Daytona used to be fun because it was about a wad of cars that can't get away from each other. At Talladega the front 4 cars usually get away but the rest of the cars are still racing in a pack. "Its a fact that the Hendrick cars are not up to speed in the draft." That is very true, they aren't good pushers, they don't come to speed on restarts quick enough, they need to make the swap more often than others, overall they just seem stalled out in the draft. Jr himself looked disappointed after the race with how they ran. 7. Cooper posted: 02.17.2011 - 6:37 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) I totally disagree Bronco. NASCAR and old fans have been trying to break up the big packs for the last ten years. Finally they've been able to do that. The reason you like the big packs and other people like the big packs is because every driver has a shot to win and theres alwasy big wrecks. Sorry that ain't racin. If you want a big fat lottery like it's been the last couple years then your going to be spending a lot of time on youtube. For the first time in years the fast cars were up front and stayed their, especially in this duel. In addition there was a bunch of lead changes and a lot of strategy. Back in the 80 and 90s there wasn't big packs and yet people always say "Wish it was like the 80's". Well ya got it so enjoy it. Think about the 76' 500 and the 79' 500. It came down to a two car duel, where stargey and position was important. The reason it was the same 7 or 8 cars was because they were the fastest 7 or 8 cars. That's what racing is about. Shut your trap and enjoy the racing. 8. Smokefan05 posted: 02.17.2011 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^ agree 100% 9. The only ones wanting the packs to be broken up were the guys getting caught up in the big ones (Newman, Marlin). NASCAR never felt breaking up the packs was an issue. I'm for the most part happy with the quality of racing today, not just at superspeedways but at other tracks too. "The reason it was the same 7 or 8 cars was because they were the fastest 7 or 8 cars. That's what racing is about." Yes, that is what racing is about, but not restrictor plate racing. RP racing is exciting for the most part because of wild, unpredictable finishes and surprise winners and top 5 finishers. 32/36 races of the year about pit strategy, track position and fast car while 4 races of the year are about guys going from the back to the front and underdogs being able to pull off upsets. I'm not sure you're going to see that anymore (Brian Keselowski's run nonwithstanding). I'll take the racing seen in last year's Speedweeks and Coke Zero 400 anyday over this pair battle type of racing. I'm hoping the Trucks and Nationwide cars can at least put on a better show. 11. If he can manage to win the 500, he will have won everything he's participated in during Daytona Speedweeks. Great finish for Regan Smith! The dude can clearly draft well. I hope he gets a decent finish in the 500 as well. I would like to congratulate Bill Elliott and JJ Yeley for racing their way into the 500. I think Bill could have fallen back on his PCP if he had needed it, but the #09 is usually pretty decent on the plate tracks. Good thing Conway didn't make the show. One less slow car we have to worry about. 12. Bronco posted: 02.18.2011 - 1:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I would like to congratulate Bill Elliott and JJ Yeley for racing their way into the 500. Bill had already locked himself in based on qualifying speed so he wouldn't have needed the PCP. Heartbreak for Conway since he was in position to make it until the last caution, but nice job by Yeley to steam towards the front. 13. But the ECR motors seem to be the best. I give credit to Kurt, he knows who has the horses, and he lines himself up with them. An HMS car could very well win the 500 (except for JJ), but it will come courtesy of a push from some other team. 14. 18fan posted: 02.18.2011 - 12:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To add to the post above, the Hendrick cars also seem to overheat a lot faster than most of the other cars. 15. It was always the same two people sticking together, and everyone was spread out, which pretty much took away the fun of restrictor plate racing. 16. Anonymous posted: 02.18.2011 - 3:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If Kurt wins the 500, this would be the second time in a row Shell/Pennzoil would've won with a driver in their first year with them. They did that with Harvick in '07. 19. Talon64 posted: 02.18.2011 - 5:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And if Kurt Busch wins he'll be the first driver to win the Shootout, a Daytona qualifier and the 500 in the same Speedweeks. 20.
