The 1st official all-star race, BUT in 1960 there was a 25 miler in
which Bill France dubbed the "All Star" it aslso was held in 61 i believe.

DW blows the engine right as he takes the checkers. Junior Johnson told
him he built an engine to last 105 miles and he was right!

There were actually several "All-Star"/Non points events races
throughout the history of NASCAR, including the several mentioned. They
also had several races that were just purely for fun. In one instance
they had Buck and Buddy Baker vs. Lee and Richard Petty.

I'll see if I can corral that info and post it here.

Eligibility Requirements for the 1985 All-Star Race:

All 1984 race winning drivers:

1.) Darrell Waltrip - 7 wins
2.) Harry Gant - 3 wins
3.) Bill Elliott - 3 wins
4.) Geoff Bodine - 3 wins
5.) Cale Yarborough - 3 wins
6.) Terry Labonte - 2 wins
7.) Dale Earnhardt - 2 wins
8.) Bobby Allison - 2 wins
9.) Richard Petty - 2 wins
10.) Ricky Rudd - 1 win
11.) Tim Richmond - 1 win
12.) Benny Parsons - 1 win

The starting lineup was determined by awarding the pole to the 1984 Cup
Champion and starting the rest of the field based their 1984 win total
(with 1984 driver's points used as the tiebreaker).

Winston first announced that this race would occur during the 1984
post-season Winston Cup awards ceremony in New York City.

Tim Richmond won a points-paying Busch race earlier in the day and then
placed in the top-5 here.

Jefferson Pilot broadcast this race. Mike Joy, Kyle Petty, and Neil
Bonnett were in the booth with Johnny Hayes, Larry Nuber, and Bob Hice
in the pits.
