The original idea for The Winston was to hold the race at a different track every year. But after this race had such a sparse "crowd", the race was moved back to Charlotte for good. 3. You won't exactly see anything like that today. 7. DieselDan posted: 03.13.2012 - 9:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cale Yarbrough's owner was himself. Rick Hendrick never fielded a car for Cale nor a Ford. 8. Anonymous posted: 05.15.2013 - 9:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, Cale Yarborough was still driving for Harry Ranier. He didn't become team owner until 1987. 9. Anonymous Moonbat posted: 09.06.2013 - 3:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Benny Parsons broadcast the race for ESPN. I remember after the All Star race ended, Bob Jenkins said Benny had to go race in the Invitational, which was baloney, because he won it BEFORE they ran the feature! 10. 23andJoe posted: 10.22.2014 - 7:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Leaders: Bill Elliott 1-38; Dale Earnhardt 39; Elliott 40-83 11. zuel660 posted: 05.21.2015 - 10:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bill's 'pass in the pits' was at least a pass for the lead, but unlike Earnhardt's faux 'pass in the grass' (more like 'block in the grass') the next year, Bill's move is largely forgotten. Perhaps Earnhardt didn't like the idea of potentially getting smoked 2 years in a row by the #9... 12. Elliott rocketed around the outside of polesitter Darrell Waltrip in turn 3 on the opening lap and never looked back, giving the lead up just once during the mandatory pitstop on lap 40. Elliott and Dale Earnhardt ran 1-2 for the entire event, while further behind them Cale Yarborough and Harry Gant battled for third early on. Waltrip struggled to keep up with the leaders; eventually, he fell into the clutches of teammate Neil Bonnett and Geoffrey Bodine. The most noteworthy event from this race was the mandatory pitstop on lap 40. While Elliott entered the pits well ahead of second-place, Dale Earnhardt had the faster stop and pulled out of his stall just ahead of Elliott. Refusing to give up the lead, Elliott gassed it and swung to the inside of Earnhardt, diving through several pit stalls to retake first place as the two exited the pits. It was smooth sailing for Elliott afterward. Earnhardt settled into second some 3 seconds behind, while Harry Gant followed in third. The main attraction for the last half of the 83-lap race was the battle for fourth between Yarborough and Bonnett, who traded the position again and again as the laps wound down. Yarborough would get the position at the checker after Bonnett nearly spun out while attempting a pass in turn 4. 15. Darrell Waltrip was well ahead of them in 4th. 16. The 2020 race would be the next new location as the COVID-19 pandemic and related schedule changes led NASCAR to run the race at Bristol that season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
