Sterling Marlin's first Winston Cup win of any kind. He'd win the Open
in '88, '89 and '93 before finally collecting one that counted.

Mark Martin's All-Star race debut sees him lead the qualifying race
early but quickly get sidelined by a blown motor and finish last. His
fortunes would improve in the future...

Is there a reason that Richard Petty, Benny Parsons and Dave Marcus
weren't eliglble for the Winston (despite the three drivers having won
races in the past) and had to start in the Winston Open instead.

Yes, then you had to win after the all-star race of that year or the
next year before the all-star race.

I believe it still the same way if I'm not mistaken. That and former
winners of the event qualify. Someone fact check for sure.

There was a crazy accident as the race ended. Brad Noffsinger crashed
into the wall, came through the infield grass and crashed into the pace
car though an opening in the wall.

He hit the pace car? Well, he'd have to have hit every other thing first
if he wanted to be perfect though. So close.

Those eligible for The Winston were the 15 most recent Winston Cup
winners, plus the Top 5 from the Winston Open.

A record 255 wins among 5 starters are represented among the drivers
ineligible for The Winston in 1988.
