Funny. 3. Anonymous posted: 09.17.2007 - 2:14 pm Rate this comment: (2) (2) Waltrip came down on Wallace. It was not intentional contact. Waltrip is a crybaby. 4. most posted: 10.10.2007 - 2:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) yeah, but this made DW more money than that win would have, he became a pretty boy good guy! 5. stricklinfan82 posted: 04.28.2008 - 10:26 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Eligibility Requirements for the 1989 All-Star Race: - all active 1988 and 1989 race winning drivers: 1.) DW responded, not getting any rust on my car! 8. Anonymous posted: 08.11.2009 - 1:49 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Thanks for turning Darrell, Rusty. Poor ol' Darrell wanted everyone to feel sorry for him afterward, like he never wrecked someone to win. I recall a race at Martinsville in '87 where he drove through Terry Labonte who got into Earnhardt which allowed poor ol' Darrell to win. 9. ii posted: 09.30.2010 - 7:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I believe that this was Richard Petty's last The Winston. 10. Of course, you'd never hear Darrell Waltrip admit he made a mistake because he never made one in racing. 11. Josh posted: 06.05.2018 - 2:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle and Richard didn't "crash" each other. Kyle Petty had something go wrong on his car and headed straight north into the wall; father Richard simply spun out of the way to avoid hitting his son. 17. It of course all came to head with Rusty's famous/infamous movie at the finish. Wallace joked years later in a conversion on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio, where both he and Waltrip had called in and were ribbing each other over this race, that he "did not" choke on all that money despite Waltrip's comment. Both of them pointed out just how much money $200,000 was for NASCAR drivers at the time. 18. Several drivers retiring pushed the 19th most recent different winners all the way back to his last win 5 years before this. Not sure how he got in the event in 1992 though. Probably just let him in because it was his last year and the fans wanted him in it. Although, looking at the 92 lineup, I don't know how in the world Dave Mader III and Hut Striklin made it in that field either. 19. Jimnsimforever posted: 12.18.2018 - 9:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) $200,000 is a lot of money still for normal people in 2018, 30 years of major inflation later. 20. Corey posted: 12.18.2018 - 10:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 They got in by rules that are no longer in place. 1. They had a rule where all winning drivers and teams got a slot in the race. In 1991 Bill Elliot drove the #9 to victory at Daytona and earned a slot in the 1992 Winston. However, he left for Junior Johnson at the end of the year. This created two filled slots for the 1992 running. One for Elliot and one for the #9 eventually driven by Mader. 2. I believe NASCAR bringing in winners of 1+ years (so 1990 and earlier) only worked if the field didn't go over 20 entrants. They were already at 18 and any previous years would have pout them over. So to achieve 20 they actually took the top x drivers from the Open. In this case they needed two and Hut Stricklin finished second, so he got in. 21. I remember thinking that was a little exaggerated because they really didn't have many run ins outside this one did they? 22. This was also the only time he lead the All-Star Race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
