(Despite Mike Joy's stating it was a Chevy in the broadcast intro, it was in fact an Olds.) Leaders: Michael Waltrip 1-3, Brett Bodine 4-12, Sterling Marlin 13-29, Michael Waltrip 30-38, Brett Bodine 39-45, Michael Waltrip 46, Hut Stricklin 47-48, Michael Waltrip 49-50 Cautions: Lap 10-12, #27 spin turn 2 Lap 39-42, #36 accident turn 2 6. His #47 Olds had a few on-board cameras and, with permission of NASCAR as this was an exhibition, actually spoke to the broadcast team while actively racing under green flag conditions. Baker had a good run, scoring his final NASCAR top-10, then joined the broadcast team for the main event later in the night. Race fans were asked to bring good luck charms to help Michael Waltrip and the Bahari #30 Pennzoil Pontiac team. It must have worked, Waltrip won this race for the second-straight year and advanced to the Winston. Second-place finisher Hut Stricklin also advanced to the big dance. Gary Balough started last but drove up to 15th before he spun out and fell back. He didn't hit anything but his night was ruined. This was actually the second race of the night. "One Hot Night" began with a racce of the infamous Sportsman series. Robbie Faggart won the 67-lap, 100-mile race from the pole and led every race in the process, defeating Dennis Setzer, but it was overshadowed by the death of driver Gary Batson in a qualifying race the night before. TNN broadcast the Sportsman race which ended under caution after a multi-car wreck that sent future USAR regular Lee Tissot to the hospital. 8. Matthew Lewis posted: 05.18.2017 - 7:08 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I'm guessing Hill DNS because he was so dreadfully slow during qualifying (thank you Anon for posting qualifying speeds above!) and they perhaps discovered something wrong with the car that was not repairable at the track. Doubt they had a backup. McFadden was only going to Start & Park either way so why bother? As for Brooks? Number failure? I don't know? Maybe they wrecked in practice or qualifying? 12. Sacks recovered to finish third, one spot shy of transferring to the Winston Select. Most of the front runners pitted during the final caution and Dick Trickle pitted at an angle in front of Sterling Marlin, costing both of them several positions out of pit road as Trickle had to back up before he could leave his stall. 13. It wouldn't pay off as Michael Waltrip, Hut Stricklin, and the others on fresh tires blew past him after the restart. Bodine finished sixth but only the top-2 moved on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
