Davey Allison is hospitalized after he and Kyle Petty make contact in the first kink in the quad-oval. 3. 3fan4eva posted: 05.03.2007 - 8:44 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) First Night Race @ Charlotte I belive, I know first Night running of The Winston, anyway the greatest finish ever to The Winston. Probably the most obscure NASCAR driver to have been in the Winston, Mader got into the event by driving the Melling #9 Ford, which had qualified thanks to Bill Elliott's win the previous year in the Pepsi 400 7. stricklinfan82 posted: 04.28.2008 - 10:31 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Eligibility Requirements for the 1992 All-Star Race: - all active 1991 and 1992 race winning drivers: 1.) Martin threw it in reverse and drove it back to the pits backward for repairs. He lost a few laps in the process but eventually got back out. The King ran as high as second after the inversion in his final All-Star race. 16. Earnhardt ran Petty literally off the racing surface on the backstretch of the last lap after Petty got under him coming off of turn 2. This ruined Earnhardt's line going into 3, and, coupled with the aerodynamic push from Petty going into 3 (the two never actually made contact) Earnhardt spun on his own. To his credit, Earnhardt never complained, admitting that both were racing to win on the last lap and that Petty, "wanted to take a little more than he was willing to give." 19. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 02.16.2015 - 1:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Good try 44andJoe but you're a tad off Green flag: Lap 1-3 Caution 1: Lap 4-8: #12,18,21,30 accident turn 2 Green flag: Lap 9-30 Caution 2: Lap 31: end of segment 1(caution laps do not count in segment endings) Green flag: Lap 31-60 Caution 3: Lap 61: end of segment 2(caution laps do not count in segment endings) Green flag: Lap 61-63 Caution 4: Lap 64(caution flags do not count in final segment): #17 spun turn 1 Green flag: Lap 64-70 20. joebev910 posted: 05.12.2015 - 5:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) They are going to have a special on fox sports 1 on may 21 21. myself posted: 03.18.2016 - 3:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) First Winston I attended. 22. Humpy made sure to stress that the blackout lift would only be for the All Star Race, and that the local blackout on the 600 would stay. 24. ol hank posted: 11.17.2017 - 1:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race was a testament to how incredible of a title sponsor Winston and RJ Reynolds were to NASCAR. The stands were packed, under the lights, there was a fan vote for the field inversion, huge purses being given out and lots of love(and free stuff) for the fans too. Wish they were still the title sponsor, they might be if it weren't for the bureaucratic BS. 25. I had no idea until watching this race that at the same time he also worked for TNN. ABC still broadcasted just 1 Cup race a year at this time. The spring Atlanta race and Benny Parsons worked there as well as ESPN, but ESPN is under the ABC umbrella. TBS is the only other station I haven't mentioned that at this time broadcasted Nascar races. Is Ned Jarrett going to show up there too? 29. It ended when the new television deal came in 2001. 30. NewJack posted: 11.23.2019 - 9:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It was a combination of wrecking Davey Allison, how he wrecked him, and was right after it appeared he spun out Dale Earnhardt in Turn 3 before that. (Replay showed Petty didn't touch him, but this was before Charlotte had the big screen TVs.) Petty was uber aggressive on that last lap, which is what NASCAR/Humpy Wheeler wanted, but especially in those days, anytime you hook someone in the right rear into the wall on a high speed track, that was the common reaction. Remember, back then Davey Allison was probably one of the three most popular drivers in NASCAR at the time. 33. Charlotte held a test session for NASCAR teams to test racing under the lights before this event and allowed fans to come watch...38,000 people turned up just to watch the cars testing. 35. First one run under the lights, The King's final "All-Star" appearance (and best finish in it), and perhaps the most exciting half-lap/finish in Cup history? This finish and the 1992 Hooters 500 have been imitated since then by NASCAR, but never duplicated. 36.
