In victory lane, Mikey couldn't even believe he pulled it out. Harry Gant came out of retirement to run this single event, his last on the Cup tour, as a replacement for Bill Elliott who was still on the mend from injuries suffered at Talladega. I can't figure out how Harry was eligible for the event, his last win was in 1992, the #94 team hadn't won a race the previous season and while Bill was a Cup champion and eligible because of it, Harry wasn't. Oh well, becoming a fan in 1995 this was my only chance to see Harry race Cup and I thought it was cool even if he ran poorly all night, only briefly getting to the front thanks to a full-field inversion (I'd love to see them bring that back) after the 1st segment. 5. stricklinfan82 posted: 04.28.2008 - 10:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Eligibility Requirements for the 1996 All-Star Race: - all active 1995 and 1996 race winning drivers: 1.) It was rebuilt after Morgan Shepherd wrecked it at Charlotte the previous year. Michael won this one fair and square though and even though it was an exhibition event, it goes down as his first major win. He used the cash that he won with to build a new house for his parents but he also went about 10 grand in the hole but it was worth it though. This was at the time Michael Waltrip's biggest purse he ever collected in an event until the 2001 Daytona 500 where he took home much more than this amount. 16. He said he was happy for the team that they made it in but they think they broke a rocker arm so he hopes that they can play with the big boys. Behind him during the interview his entire crew were at the car with the hood up frantically working on it (including Jack Roush himself) trying to get it fixed. So the damage was done before the race. Might as well go out and start and park and pick up a 2nd check that even finishing dead last in 20th in The Winston, was still substantially bigger than the check for 4th in the Open. Heck, the check was even bigger than Spencer got for winning the Open. 23.
