Great to see Labonte get this win. This was kind of a crazy race with a
wreck that took out a lot of front runners.

Yup. Except for Stewart, Gordon, Earnhardt, and maybe Mayfield, I think
the crash took out nearly everyone who could've challenged Texas Terry
for the win.

A great deserving run for Texas Terry Labonte. Stewart showed he had
talent by his 2nd place finish. I remember DJ's wreck in the white 88
car and I was a young kid then.

For his annual special Winston paint job, Dale Earnhardt brought back
his old yellow and blue Wrangler colors for this event, complete with
Wrangler sponsorship on the hood

It didn't last long before being taken out in the big one but Dale
Jarrett had a special reverse-colored #88 Ford for this race as the
normally blue with red and white Taurus instead was painted white with
red and blue for this race. It was the only time in his 1999
championship season that D.J. ran a different look.

Just watched some of the race on YouTube. You'd think today's FOX team
was covering the race, lol. TNN was covering it, and they go to
commercial moments after the Jarrett/Burton/Rudd crash, then they
completely miss the ensuing restart when the field wrecked on the
backstretch! Just terrible coverage.

Dale Earnhardt's Wrangler / Goodwrench #3 from this race is now on
display at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The car was placed on the famous
"Glory Road" during the display's new third incarnation, representing
the raise of the special paint scheme as a recurring part of NASCAR.

Jeff Gordon's Superman special in this race was painted with DuPont's
famous color-changing ChromaLusion paint for this race, just as his 1998
Winston car had been. His team-up with the Man of Steel was part of a
cross-motorsport promotion between Action Performance and DC Comics that
saw many famous drivers in numerous series run Superman-themed paint
jobs throughout the 1999 season, focusing on reigning series champions
where possible. The other participants included Truck champ Ron
Hornaday, Jr., Busch champ Dale Earnhardt, Jr., World of Outlaws champ
Steve Kinser, former CART champ Jimmy Vasser, and NHRA racers John
Force, Joe Amato, Warren Johnson, and Matt Hines. On the other side of
the coin all of the racers also got to appear in a special one-off
Superman comic tying in with the promotion.

John Andretti finishes 10th to post his best finish in the Winston. The
ex-CART racer made it into the all-star race three times in 1998, 1999,
and 2000 but this was the only time he didn't end up crashing out very
early in the race.

Terry was in the backstretch pileup himself, popped up the hood a bit.
The crew put red tape down both sides of the hood to keep it shut.
Stewart put up a fight for a lap or two, but Labonte then drove off into
the sunset for his 2nd and final all-star race win.

This was Labonte's last win until the 2003 Southern 500, which is from
what I can tell the third longest post-Winston/All-Star victory win
drought. Michael Waltrip (1996) and Jamie McMurray (2014) had longer
droughts, though McMurray's drought ended due to retirement rather than
a win.

Eli Gold along with Buddy Baker and Dr. Dick Berggren were the
commentators. Glenn Jarrett along with Steve Byrnes and Ralph Sheheen
were the pit road reporters.
