(which is missing the stats on this site for some reason) Newman had dominated the qualifier but blew the engine on the #02 Ford right at the end, allowing Johnny Benson Jr to score his first Cup victory of any kind and advance into this race. 4. stricklinfan82 posted: 04.28.2008 - 10:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Eligibility Requirements for the 2001 All-Star Race: - all active 2000 and 2001 race winning drivers: 1.) RaceFanX posted: 06.18.2009 - 10:46 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) Drivers who ran this race in backups after the lap 1 crash: Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick and Michael Waltrip. Because of the extended rain delay after the wreck at the start, Gordon's crew actually pulled the engine out of his wrecked car and put it in the backup. Also give RCR some credit for being prepared. Harvick's #29 Chevy had a special Goodwrench/AOL paint job which was also painted on the backup car. 9. I hate rain during an oval race, but it can make the broadcast great if the network hired the right people! 10. Harvick was supposed to do a limited series of seven Cup races in 2001 in the new RCR #30 AOL Chevrolet, starting at Atlanta in the spring, before driving that car full-time in 2002. When Dale Earnhardt died Harvick moved to the Goodwrench car and Jeff Green got the ride in the AOL car instead. The AOL scheme was not Dale Earnhardt Sr's intended annual Winston alternate, the evidence I've seen implied Big E's plan for his traditional all-star change of colors would have been a reverse of his normal paint job with a white #3 for 2001. 12. As someone else also said on here. I have seen concepts for it but can't find the source. 14. He joked the teams took advantage of that to quickly trick them out...of course Gordon passed post-race inspection so they couldn't have done too much crazy stuff to it. 16. It was obviously better than his competitor's primary cars who didn't crash in the beginning of the race. With a backup car like that, it was easy to see why Jeff was such a force en route to his 4th Winston Cup championship in the year of 2001. 17. Darrell posted: 11.25.2017 - 3:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Gordon's lap 1 crash was at a similar angle to the one of Earnhardt's final crash. He later complained of neck pain and said that he felt his neck get stretched as he wrecked. Thankfully, he was also wearing a HANS device. I'd hate to think of what might have happened if he hadn't, given NASCAR's decision to try and race even with rain in the area. 18. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 05.19.2018 - 9:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Caution 1: Lap 1 (Caution laps do not count in The Winston): #15,24,29,99 accident turn 2 Green flag: Lap 1-20 Caution 2: Lap 21 (Caution laps do not count in The Winston): #29 stalled on pit road Green flag: Lap 21-24 Caution 3: Lap 25 (Caution laps do not count in The Winston): oil on track Green flag: Lap 25-30 Caution 4: Lap 31 (Caution laps do not count in The Winston): end of segment 1 Green flag: Lap 31-60 Caution 5: Lap 61 (Caution laps do not count in The Winston): end of segment 2 Green flag: Lap 61-70 19.
