However, he had the presence of mind to put his car in reverse BEFORE he slid to a stop, and so was able to quickly back up a bit without losing very much time. The fact that he had the fastest pit stop certainly didn't hurt either! Weird to think that if not for that, the front row for the race would have been the two drivers who transferred in by winning the two Sprint Showdown segments last night...I can't be the only one who finds it weird to have the guys who transferred qualifying with everyone else, can I? 2. He has a fast car, but he came in too fast and blew through the pit box coming in, which means he's starting towards the rear. I'm glad to see him back so soon from his injuries, but I have no idea what his performance over these next several races is going to look like...Still, it's nice having him back even if I will never be a fan of his...Question, how many people actually think he's going to make the Chase? 4. RaceFanX posted: 05.16.2015 - 8:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle's return here reminds me of Tim Richmond's big return at the All-Star race back in 1987. Granted Kyle's in a lot better position than Richmond was at the time. Tim finished third that day. Will Rowdy do better? 5. murb posted: 05.16.2015 - 8:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Biffle looks really fast this weekend. He ran away with Segment 1 of the Showdown, and now he's qualified on the outside pole. I hate to beat a dead horse, but I really think Bayne and Stenhouse are making Roush seem a lot worse than it is. Earnhardt Jr is my pick to win. I think I picked him in my pre-season picks, and after the way he's been running lately, I'm sticking with him. 6. dennyfan11 posted: 05.16.2015 - 8:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Biffle also isn't doing so well. Only 1 finish in the top 10, and only 8 laps led all year. 7. RaceFanX posted: 05.16.2015 - 8:44 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Jeff Gordon's final All-Star race. He's won it three times before, each in memorable fashion, so will he be leaving with a fourth triumph? 8. Schroeder51 posted: 05.16.2015 - 8:47 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "Biffle also isn't doing so well. Only 1 finish in the top 10, and only 8 laps led all year." True, but even so, he's pretty much been leading the Roush brigade most of the year. I like Bayne personally, but as much as it might pain racefangirl to hear this, I have to wonder if he's just not all that great a Cup Series driver. Yes, Roush's equipment has gone downhill over the past several years, but as murb and others have pointed out, I don't think it's ALL the equipment's fault Roush is struggling. Look at how well Biffle did in the first segment of the Showdown! 9. Schroeder51 posted: 05.16.2015 - 8:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jeff Gordon's 22nd and last All-Star Race. The only time he didn't compete in the race was in his rookie year back in '93...and he was well on pace to racing his way into the race that year when he crashed in the Winston Open while holding a dominant lead. 10. dennyfan11 posted: 05.16.2015 - 8:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "he's pretty much been leading the Roush brigade most of the year." With the simpleton system, its much easier for a driver that misses races to make up points in the back of the pack than the Latford system where S&P's even picked up 40-50 points/race. Daytona's a wild card, Gibbs has been good as usual at the short tracks, and Kyle has a good history at the Glen. 12. murb posted: 05.16.2015 - 8:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Biffle also isn't doing so well. Only 1 finish in the top 10, and only 8 laps led all year." I never said that they weren't bad (and despite his speed this weekend, Biffle isn't nearly what he once was). Obviously they have a long way to go. But I think it's naive to think that all their problems are equipment related. 13. I will say this; it's at LEAST an improvement over last year where Jake Owen introduced EVERY SINGLE DRIVER by announcing "Y'all give it up for (insert driver's name here)!" and they kept playing the same few bars of music over and over again ad infinitum! Then again, it wouldn't take a WHOLE lot to improve on that... 18. Racing wise, I think this one was better than '11, '12, '13 and possibly even '14. But I think people are angry largely because we really got to see a very obvious example of aero push take center stage in the race when Harvick got killed by Hamlin's air. With such a stark example of aero push happening at such a crucial time, it brought to light just how much of a problem it is. But of course like others said this doesn't necessarily mean the racing overall was worse than other All-Star races. I think most would agree that a few of the last 6-7 All Star races were far worse racing wise and saw far greater passing difficulties. 231. So,I agree with the PRINCIPLE of what they did this year, and I think the intentions were good (for once) but they just didn't go nearly far enough with it. The problem, as was predicted and noted by some of you guys as as early as last summer is that taking away 125 HP is going to have a marginal AT BEST effect on the speed of the cars, and of course in some cases while straightaway speed might be slightly down corner speeds are UP this year. So that certainly is playing a role in the racing not being as good as last year(although by no means was last year any great benchmark, it certainly wasn't even 2010/11 stuff, but anyways). And while taking away some spoiler is the right move, you've got to temper it with lower corner speeds to have any chance for improvement. Higher corner speeds+Less downforce=2014>2015. 235. I'd say it was definitely better than what we saw in 2011 and '13, almost on par with last year but not as good as '12. It was strange how some guys' cars just fell off when they weren't at the front of the pack. Dale Jr. looked like he was gonna contend for the win after Segment 1, but the two-tire screw-up and handling issues when he was mid-pack pretty much ended any hopes of a charge. Those drivers in question were Mark Martin, Terry Labonte, and Bobby Isaac. That question was what was more important, a high number of wins and no championships, a lower number of wins and a championship, or a much lower win total with multiple championships. I think the results of the Hall of Fame voting answers that loud and clear. Championships REALLY matter to the voters, because of the three drivers in question, the only one that didn't get elected was the driver with the highest win total of the three, but the only one of the three without a championship, and that's Mark Martin (40 wins and no championships). And the driver that got in with the highest vote total among the three was Terry Labonte, who has by far the lowest number of wins among the three (with 22 wins), but is also the only multiple champion in that 3-driver group. Bobby Isaac slotted in the middle (both in terms of the wins/championships combination, as well as the vote total), which as it turned out, was good enough for election into the Hall of Fame. But I've said this before, and I'll say it again, and again, and again. I have a big problem with someone getting elected to a Hall of Fame with less than half the votes, and two of the five that got voted in (Isaac and Jerry Cook) were voted in with less than half the votes. There needs to be a minimum vote threshold for election and induction into the Hall of Fame. I'd say somewhere between 50 and 60% of the vote should be the minimum requirement for enshrinement. For comparison's sake, the Baseball Hall of fame requires a three-quarter vote total, minimum, for enshrinement. Granted, that's too high a threshold for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, but they should at least half to have half the votes. I do find it ironic that both of the men that built the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner, will go in together, and I don't think that's bad. As controversial a figure as he was (and still is), Bruton Smith has done as much to promote the sport as anyone other than the France family, and Curtis Turner was as talented a driver as there was in the formative years of the sport, and his total of 17 wins would certainly be significantly higher if not for his 4-year banishment not long after the 1961 World 600. And I don't agree with The Long Shot's assertion that the NASCAR Hall of fame voting process is a complete joke. Now, if Jeff Gordon, and later, Jimmie Johnson don't get in with a UNANIMOUS first-ballot selection when they become eligible, then the process and the voters who select who gets in will have officially become a joke, but right now, it isn't a joke. 246. While Benny did a lot of NASCAR, Bobby Isaac actually should've Inducted before the 2016 class. Bobby Isaac actually deserved to be in the 2014 or 2015. The real reason Benny didn't get in is Bruton Smith. Bruton really shouldn't be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame based on what did in the last 20 years like Reconfiguring Bristol and caused fans not buy tickets anymore as a result. Bruton Smith also has a tendency giving his tracks cup dates when they aren't ready at the time like Kentucky's parking problem and all the problems Texas had in 1997. This also is known to sue Charlotte. 248. Evan posted: 05.20.2015 - 9:37 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) I think this is a decent class of Hall of Famers but honestly, they got it right. As much as I don't really agree with some of Bruton Smith's actions, he does deserve to get in due to his building of Charlotte Motor Speedway, he also rebuilt several tracks that were in disrepair such as Atlanta and expanded it out to a quad-oval(it helped the racing), and turned Bristol into a Colosseum. He helped NASCAR go mainstream with building the racetracks and making some others better, he's done more good than bad. In other words, Bruton had a ton of money, he at least used it to be productive in a positive manner. People want to make cases for Buddy Baker and Benny Parsons. Yeah, I get that but I don't think Buddy Baker deserves to even get in yet, he won the 1980 Daytona 500 and four straight Talladega races and he did a lot for the sport, Benny Parsons great racer and guy, but I don't think he needs to get in the Hall yet because there are many people who need to get in before him, many people like these guys for who they were as people. Buddy and Benny were active in NASCAR as analysts and commentators and it helped elevate their profile. In addition, Mark Martin who has 40 races didn't make it, if he had a championship, he would already be in, if Daytona and Talladega were never around, I think he would get in as well. But his ridiculous longevity, the fact that even though he never won a championship, he was very close and he was always in contention for a title, Mark was very conservative, sometimes a little too much, which helped him get the most out of his equipment and be consistent, but Mark is still a well respected man in the garage area. Getting back to the inductees, Bobby Isaac was a great choice, not many people know too much about Bobby Isaac but trust me, he beat Richard Petty when he was in his prime in one of the toughest eras to compete in when you had to face the 43 every week. Terry Labonte is a no-brainer at this stage with 2 championships and his first and last wins were the Southern 500 book-ending a pretty solid career, a real smooth driver who just was very consistent. This was a tough decision, at least Rick Hendrick or Richard Childress didn't get inducted, as their careers are still going on. The HOF class was pretty vanilla, there weren't inductees I wanted off of the list, but there were some I wanted in there too. So I think think they kept it pretty level as far as their 2015 HOF Class. --People I want to see get inducted to the Hall ^ Red Byron, he was the first champion of the series, ever. That alone gets him into the Hall. He was also a pioneer. ^ Alan Kulwicki, only five wins but won the thrilling 1992 championship and he was the first to treat racing like a business, carefully hand-picking young mechanics and crew members who thought analytically like he did. He was taken away from us way too soon. ^ Raymond Parks-the owner of the first champion. 249. joey2448 posted: 05.20.2015 - 9:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) While I agree that Bruton "Boss Hogg" Smith getting inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame before Benny Parsons is awful, I think Jerry Cook getting in before Parsons is the bigger travesty. Cook deserves a spot one day, but to put him in this year over BP?? A modified driver (granted, he was a legend) getting in before a Cup driver?? This is the NASCAR HoF! And as much as I hate Bruton for his questionable decisions that have driven off many hardcore fans (taking away dates from traditional racetracks, changing things that aren't broken), he is a NASCAR stalwart that has been around since the old days. I mean, he pretty much built Charlotte Motor Speedway and began the tradition of the World 600 (now called the Coca-Cola 600)! Gotta give him credit for his impact on the sport, good or bad. 250. Sean posted: 05.20.2015 - 10:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "This is the NASCAR HoF!" Well, that's going to be the argument that minor league drivers' fans will use...that it is the NASCAR HoF, not the Cup HoF, and all series should be considered. I do think they're inducting the minor league drivers too soon, and I would not have taken Richie Evans before Baker, Thomas, Wallace, Flock, or Roberts, and I sure would not have taken Jack Ingram before Weatherly, Lorenzen, Turner, or Isaac either. I think the HoF is overrating the minor-league drivers. And yes, I know there are people who argue that in various previous periods of their history Winston-->K&N West, Modifieds, and Sportsman weren't minor league and were closer to Cup in strength. There are also people who argue that the Modified tour should be equated to Cup (it was the original NASCAR series, blah blah blah). I would be more Cup-centric than this. While I agree all the minor league drivers on the ballot deserve induction (and I was happy Larry Phillips and Mike Stefanik made the ballot after being snubbed from the 50 Greatest Drivers list, even though I'm disappointed Ray Elder isn't on the ballot now, since he was better than McGriff on the Western tour even if he was less famous), I still think the Cup legends should generally get in first. I'd even take the Geoff Bodines, Ernie Irvans, and Tim Richmonds first... I would take minor-league legends over say Bobby Labonte, Junior, Jeff Burton, Donnie Allison, Sterling Marlin, and second-tier drivers of that ilk, but probably not over any of the top 30-40 Cup drivers. Also, I actually think they made the wrong choice with Cook if they were going to pick a modified driver. Stefanik had 7 titles to Cook's 6 PLUS Stefanik managed to win back-to-back titles in BOTH Busch North/modified in '97-'98 in both years...Lee Petty was the only driver previously to win multiple NASCAR championships in one year and he only did it once. I think it should have been Stefanik instead of Cook, but I think Cup drivers/engineers should still be the priority while there are Cup legends sitting out (hell, Smokey Yunick should already be inducted and he isn't on the ballot yet while Evernham is, lol). I absolutely would have inducted Parsons. He would have been my third choice for drivers after Isaac and Turner (I'm glad both of them made it because they were the OBVIOUS two in my mind), and easily before Labonte, Cook, or Martin. I probably give a slight edge to Parsons vs. Labonte as a driver (remember I don't really care about championships if the driver wasn't REALLY the best driver in a season, and neither Parsons nor Labonte ever were regardless of titles they may have won). I would take Mark Martin over either of them based on driving alone, but I think Parsons's announcing should have pushed him over the line over either of them in his case. The announcing has to be the only reason the Jarretts both got in while superior drivers were out. Parsons could have taken either Smith, Labonte, or Cook's spot and I'd have little to complain about. But for all three of them to make it and him not seems wrong. I guess they're biased for Cook and Smith because they're still alive and want to make sure they induct them before they die, and they're biased for Labonte because of the modern television bias where every driver who raced when all the races were on television seems to get preference over drivers who raced when few of the races or none of the races were... 251. Carl Kiekhaefer and Holman-Moody ran their teams like businesses decades earlier. Even if you're talking owner-drivers I think Petty Enterprises was very business-savvy for most of its run until Richard left the team to go to Mike Curb... Kulwicki both driving and engineering himself in 1992 was kind of a novelty, but it wouldn't have been several decades earlier. I would have still taken Kulwicki easily over Terry Labonte. 252. Those three are more important to NASCAR history than any driver not inducted and all should have been inducted already (I would say Holman-Moody's importance is more significant than the Wood Brothers who were already inducted, in large part because they designed the chassis/engines that the Woods used BEYOND just their own dominance as a racing team, not to mention that their chassis were the basis for EVERY Cup chassis until the Car of Tomorrow, something I just learned today, even though I already thought they should be on the ballot long before now). I still believe Yunick is probably snub #1, but these are the easily the top three and no one else is close. Yet so many less important names have been inducted... But I think Holman and Moody should be inducted as a unit (neither deserves it solo), just as I felt the Wood Brothers should be inducted as a unit, but in their case, I guess Glen and Leonard did have a bit greater credentials as individuals separate from each other... 253.
