Rain washed out qualifying for this race so the field for this non-points race was uniquely lined up by points. Originally this race was to use the unique qualifying format including a no speed limit pit stop. Tony Stewart competes in his final All-Star race and will give the command to start the engines. In his whole career he never missed the main event, putting him in some elite company (Did anyone else but Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Rusty Wallace never miss one?). 2. Fox Sports 1 televised this race and aired the Showdown again before the main event after qualifying was rained out. 3. Can't wait to get this thing started. 4. But Jimmie Johnson has never missed one. 7. dennyfan11 posted: 05.21.2016 - 8:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And now it's stopped, and we're dry from here on out! 8. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 05.21.2016 - 8:28 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Gordon would've been in every All-Star Race run during his Cup career if not for the fact that he crashed halfway through the Winston Open in his rookie year while holding a commanding lead. I honestly can't think of many who have always competed in the All-Star Race during their career... Bit surprised that they lined them up by points considering this ISN'T a points-paying race. Also, I knew Chase Elliott was already quite popular, but I didn't anticipate him beating BOTH Danica and Reddit's DiBenedetto spam-fest. (Although Danica still gets in because they upped it to two fan-votes this year). I must admit, I didn't foresee Bayne or Biffle successfully racing their way in (Larson isn't a big surprise), but congratulations to them; hopefully they can both get some good results tonight. 10. The year 2016 is M&M's 75th Anniversary and the candy brand has been celebrating the special mark all year. 11. RaceFanX posted: 05.21.2016 - 8:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Several drivers have only missed the All-Star race once, often in their rookie attempt. Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin and Greg Biffle are all in that boat. Kasey Kahne has never missed it. He didn't qualify in 2008 and lost in the Open but the fans voted him in and he thanked them by winning it. 12. Nathan8848 posted: 05.21.2016 - 8:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's only 169 miles. Then again, this race has had plenty of wacky formats over the years, so why am I (or anyone, for that matter) surprised? Between the confusion over where everyone was running at the end of the first segment, the wreck caused by Chase Elliott trying to get to pit road, and there only being two drivers at the front on old tires at the end, this race was a swing and a huge miss. As for the Logano/Larson incident, I may hate Logano with a passion, but he did nothing wrong there. They were both racing hard and Larson actually came down more than Logano came up. It sucks for Larson, but he handled himself really well after the race and at this point he has to be one of the favorites to win the Coke 600 with how well he's run the past few races, especially today. 353. racefangurl posted: 05.22.2016 - 12:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! Joey Logano showed again why he's a more dangerous driver when he's stalking the lead than he is when he's leading, because for most of the evening, he was not a factor to win the race, but as the race went along, Logano became stronger, and when it counted as was the case in numerous races last year, including the Daytona 500, Logano had the goods, as he ran down and passed Kyle Larson for the win, and despite what the commentators said, did so without ever making contact with Larson's car. Larson tried to do the same thing to Logano that he had done to chase Elliott earlier in the day, but there was one significant, and I think, decisive difference, and that was Logano's vast experience. Logano used his experience to his advantage to join the elite list of drivers to have won the All-Star Race, a list he truly belongs in. Logano also became the third Penske driver to win the All-Star race, joining Ryan Newman (2002) and Kurt Busch (2010). Logano's win (and Penske's 1-2 finish with Brad Keselowski coming in second)wasn't the only reason for Ford fans to celebrate. It's obvious that finishing fifth at Bristol and leading the race at Talladega like he did has made Trevor Bayne a much more confident driver, because the move he made to win the first segment of the Sprint Showdown was one he would have never tried prior to that. But he's now become a more confident driver, and it showed, not only in threading the needle to win that segment of the Sprint Showdown, but also in his battle with Kurt Busch near the end of the All-Star Race. Kurt Busch tried on more than one occasion to intimidate Bayne, but Bayne was having none of it, as he did not back down from Kurt one bit. Kurt eventually did pass Bayne, but I think, as was even noted by the commentators, Bayne showed a level of aggressiveness that even they had never seen, mainly because I think he's now a confident driver. Bayne's great day, combined with his other recent good finishes is a welcome sign for Roush Racing, which has needed something good to happen for them for some time. I thought that Bayne would be the driver to break through for Roush, and today and tonight may be the start of it. But as good of a evening as it was for Ford, it was an equally bad evening for NASCAR, as they committed yet another in a long line of officiating snafus, when they basically allowed a rule-breaking Matt Kenseth to adversely affect the runs of about half the field, when that caution came out for Jamie McMurray's spin late in Segment 1. That trapped no fewer than SEVEN cars one lap behind Kenseth, who then pitted under caution at the end of the first segment. And while he was penalized a lap for not stopping under green, as was required, the other seven cars essentially got the same penalty for conforming to the rules, making their required green flag stop, and then getting trapped one lap behind at the end of Segment 1. And instead of NASCAR waving around the seven trapped cars that were ahead of new leader Carl Edwards before opening the pits for the mandatory pit stops between the first and second segments, the had all the cars pit. Then they did not know what to do before ruling that the seven cars that were trapped one lap behind had to start BEHIND the lead lap cars and stay one lap behind, basically for abiding by the rules. What NASCAR should have done was to wave the cars around BEFORE opening up the pits, so that the seven cars affected by Matt Kenseth not stopping would not have to pay the same penalty Kenseth was rightfully forced to pay. After all, this is the All-Star Race, an event in which four teams were allowed to roll out back-up cars 15 years ago after a sudden shower on the original start, and one of those back-up cars actually won the race, so there is precedent for something like that in the All-Star Race. Let the trapped cars get the wave-around, and then have the pit stops. People giving Brad K. a lot of flak for the fiasco that happened last night are a little off in their aim. Whatever his talents behind the wheel of a racecar, nobody considers Brad to be a "deep thinker" and although he may have been the main thrust behind this putrid new format, NASCAR approved it and the rest of the drivers apparently kept their reservations to themselves (that's hard to believe) or were ignored by NASCAR (that's far easier to believe). The most disturbing thing is that NASCAR seems to be not only willing, but desperate, to embrace any sort of brainless gimmickry in a last-ditch attempt to get new fans on board -- now that they've done such a fantastic job of alienating all of the old ones. If the gimmicks were limited to some mid-season non-points race that nobody really cares about that might be OK, but sadly there seems to be no limits at all to NASCAR's self-destructive mission. 370. I think it should just be ONE 110 lap segment. No segments, no lug nut checks, no field inversions, no nothing. Let the race be a race. I dread to think of what next year will bring... My predictions: - 10 segments. - Before each, Crew-members must draw how many laps the next segment will be. - The Showdown will be abolished, instead, there will be a dart-board with the names of the drivers non-eligible, whoever the dart is thrown at gets in, as well as the fan-vote winner. - After each segment, a random number of drivers at random positions in the field will be swapped in order. Again, this is drawn from a hat. - At a random point in each segment, entitled the "Dodgeball Lap", half the drivers will be required to race in the opposite direction. - Quadruple-file restarts. - Mandatory four tire pit stops every segment. - A halftime show after segment 5 - Fans vote the winner! Sad thing is, these don't seem out of the question... 375. Segment 1: 40 laps. Mandatory green-flag pitstop. In keeping with the current CHASE format, the first 16 finishers will advance to round 2; 17th or worse will be done for the night. Top 3 finishers get $200K, $100K, and $50K respectively (or more), AND have the privilege of changing tires and making adjustments before Segment 2 (in addition to 13th-16th place finishers, because they'll be at the back anyway). Top 12 finishers will be inverted for Segment 2. 4th-12th place finishers will start 1st-9th for the 2nd segment, but may not make adjustments or change tires (except for flat tire[s]); violators must serve a drive through penalty during segment 2. Segment 2: 30 laps. No mandatory pit stop. Only the Top 12 finishers advance to Segment 3. First 3 finishers get $300K, $200K, & $100K (or more). Random draw determines number of cars inverted for Segment 3. Designated drawer will select a number from 1 to 12 from a hat, and will be seen on the jumbotrons and the FOX Sports broadcast. Segment 3: 20 laps. Balls to the wall. No use of the yellow flag unless necessary. If it is displayed, drivers WILL race back to the caution. Caution laps will not be scored. Pit lane will not be closed at any time. No commitment cone. No restart zone; green flag determines the restart, and drivers can pass as soon as the flag waves. Race will end under green. Winner gets $2 million. 378. cjs3872 posted: 05.23.2016 - 1:07 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I like the 3-segment system with the inversion, but I liked it the way it was from 1992-'01. Two segments long enough to require a car to be good on longer runs, because a 30-lap run, as it was then, is a long enough run for cars that handle well on somewhat older tires to move up. It also gave the drivers enough time to not have to make hasty moves, but at the same time, short enough to not require a pit stop in the middle of the segments, thus avoiding the potential of the fiasco that developed in this race. Then after the first two segments, they had the 10-lap sprint to make the drivers get on it, and rewarded short run set-ups. That format, which lasted until 2001, marked the best format the All-Star Race has had, and produced most of the event's most memorable moments, as well as some of the greatest winners the event has ever had. Allison, Dale, Sr., Gordon, Martin, Labonte, and Dale, Jr. all won the race at least once in that old 30-30-10 format the All-Star Race had in it's greatest years. And best of all, they only tweaked the format once in the decade they had the 30-30-10 format, and that was when they added an OPTIONAL pit stop between the second 30-lap segment and the 10-lap sprint in 1998. I think NASCAR should go back to that old 3-segment format, though I would make the distances in the first and last segment slightly different than what they were from runnings 8-17. I believe they should begin with a 40-lap segment, again rewarding those that bring fast cars, but also those that bring cars that handle well on longer runs. Then the race would be stopped, all cars be allowed to do anything they would, or could normally do on a nominal pit stop. After that, invert every car on the lead lap and run another 30 laps, which was the same distance of Segment 2 from 1992-2001. This would give the fast cars relegated to the back time to get toward the front. Then after the 30-lap second segment, run a couple of caution laps to open the pits, as would be done on a normal caution period, and then open the pits for an OPTIONAL pit stop, meaning the teams could pit if they so desire for two or four tires, but would not be mandated to do so. After that would come the final segment, which would be 15 GREEN FLAG laps, though if the caution came out on the final lap, the race would be over, as would be the case in a normal NASCAR race. In short, you have the field run 40 laps, invert the field among all the lead lap cars, and then they would run 45 more laps total, 30, an optional pit stop, and then another 15 green flag laps to determine the winner. As for the Sprint Showdown, or whatever it's going to be called beginning next year, again they should go back to the way it used to be, as far as the race itself is concerned. I think it should be a 100-mile race, with only the number of cars needed to fill the field for the All-Star Race advancing to the All-Star Race. No stupid fan vote, which is like allowing a golfer to continue in a tournament after missing the cut, and no multiple segments in the preliminary event. For instance, for this year's event, the top five finishers would have advanced, since only 15 were already in the All-Star Race, to fill the field of 20. If at least 20 had already qualified for the All-Star race, then only the winner advances to the All-Star Race. And of course, qualify the cars for the All-Star Race BEFORE you run the Showdown, because that means that those already qualified for the All-Star Race deserve to start up front, while those that have to run the Showdown just to be in the All-Star Race should have to start behind those already qualified. The fact that Chase Elliott, who needed one of the ridiculous fan votes, was able to start seventh, ahead of many of the sport's elite competitors who had earned their way into the All-Star Race, is totally absurd. If these ideas worked when the All-Star Race was actually one of the best and most anticipated events in the sport in the 90s and early 2000s, then why can't they work now? 379. racefangurl posted: 05.23.2016 - 2:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 378, Chase isn't a bad driver, though. Not next year, but I do think Erik will get the #20 in 2018. People think he's gonna replace Hamlin in the #11, but I think Hamlin is still running well enough and is still young enough (and he's now basically defaulted into JGR's version of a Greg Biffle veteran/utility driver) that I think they will justify keeping him over Kenseth (who will be 46 years old in early 2018). So I think Erik running two years of NXS (2016, 2017) and then getting a JGR Cup ride in 2018 is the most plausible scenario. 385. cjs3872 posted: 05.23.2016 - 11:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There's no doubt that Chase Elliott is a very good driver and will win races to earn a spot in future All-Star races, racefangurl (#379). But that's not the point. The point is that no driver that has to qualify via the Showdown or the fan vote, no matter who it is, should be able to start ahead of those already qualified for the All-Star Race based on their merits. In the glory days of the All-Star Race (the 90s and early 2000s), the drivers that had to run the Showdown, or Winston Open as it was then called, had to start behind the drivers who had already qualified for the All-Star Race. But by running in the preliminary event, those that qualified for the All-Star Race via the Open actually had an advantage over those that didn't have to run the preliminary, which is why they had better finishes than one might expect, including wins by Michael Waltrip (1996) and Ryan Newman (2002) and two runner-up finishes by Sterling Marlin in 1988 and '89 after having to run the preliminary, as well as a runner-up finish by Ken Schrader in '94 and Tony Stewart in '99 after running in the preliminary event. In other words, the disadvantage for those that had to run the preliminary event of having to start behind the cars locked into the All-Star Race was often cancelled out by having the knowledge of having run in race conditions. 386. joey2448 posted: 05.24.2016 - 12:36 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) "Whatever his talents behind the wheel of a racecar, nobody considers Brad to be a "deep thinker"." "Survival of the Fastest" was cool in premise and made fans and drivers care more about racing deeper in the field (maybe it even made sense given the Winston featured a legitimate 27-car starting field in 2002) BUT at the end of the day it meant that a lot of fans had to watch their favorite drivers forced out of the race by a gimmick than have to sit through a final segment with only 10 cars on the track. I was a huge Mark Martin fan at the time and he got eliminated both years so the last segment felt meaningless to me. Some of that fondness might be because the Winston in general was wild in those years. The 2002 race saw Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett, Sterling Marlin, and Mark Martin eliminated more of their own accord than the gimmick. Martin blew a motor running hard in Segment 2 and the first were knocked out by a big wreck in Segment 1.
